Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Razzie for Worst Leading Actor of 2002 was awarded to an Italian actor and director from the movie "Pinocchio". He did win an Oscar for Best Actor for the movie "La Vita è Bella (Life is Beautiful)" (1997). Who is this actor and director?

Answer: Roberto Benigni

Roberto Remigio Benigni was born on the October 27th, 1952 in Manciano La Misericordia, Italy. He started out his acting career in 1971 in the theatre and gradually appeared in both televison and movie roles. In 1991 he married actress Nicoletta Braschi. He is probably most famous for the 1997 movie "La Vita è Bella (Life is Beautiful)", a movie about a Jewish Italian who tries to help his family during their time in a concentration camp in the Second World War.

The movie "Pinocchio" was released in 2002, with the language spoken being Italian. It is based on the story by Carlo Collodi. Roberto Benigni directed the movie and starred in the title role. The movie was later dubbed into English using famous stars such as Glenn Close and John Cleese. It did not seem to please the critics, with a total of six nominations at the Golden Raspberry Awards.
2. Starring in a sequel is not always a good idea, as this actress found out. She won the Razzie for Worst Leading Actress of 2006 for reprising her role of Catherine Tramell in the sequel to a steamy thriller originally released in 1992 and directed by Paul Verhoeven. Which actress is referred to?

Answer: Sharon Stone

Sharon Vonne Stone was born on March 10th, 1958 in Meadville, Pennsylvania, USA. In 1992 the first "Basic Instict" movie was released; an erotic thriller directed by Paul Verhoeven. It introduced the character of Catherine Tramell, as portrayed by Sharon Stone. It was the big breakthrough for her. In the movie she plays an author of crime stories suspected of murder. She starts a strange cat and mouse game with detective Nick Curran (played by Michael Douglas), and tries to seduce him. The sequel released in 2006 sees Sharon Stone take up the role of Catherine Tramell once again. The movie follows quite the same pattern with Tramell again suspected of murder, this time of her husband, a football player. She this time plays seductive mind games with a psychiatrist, Dr. Michael Glass (played by David Morrissey).

It was very difficult to make the sequel to "Basic Instinct". It was originally intended to be released in 2002, but it turned out to be hard to find a director and male lead for the movie. Michael Douglas and Paul Verhoeven both did not choose to work on the sequel. Eventually the movie won four Razzie Awards, including Worst Picture. Sharon Stone had previously won the Worst Leading Actress of 1994 for her roles in "Intersection" and "The Specialist".
3. Weird things can happen at the Razzies. In the award show for 1984 an actress actually won a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor for her role in the 1983 movie "Sahara". Which actress, who won the first Razzie for Worst Leading Actress of 1980 for "Blue Lagoon", received this dubious honour?

Answer: Brooke Shields

Brooke Christa Shields was born on May 31st, 1965 in New York, USA. She was a child model and actress. In 1980 she starred in "The Blue Lagoon", a movie about two teenagers who are stranded at a deserted island and discover love and sexuality. The movie also starred Christopher Atkins. She would win the first ever Razzie for Worst Leading Actress in the 1980 show.

In 1983, Brooke starred in the movie "Sahara" alongside Lambert Wilson and John Mills. In this movie she disguises herself as a man, to replace her father in a race held through the Sahara. It lead to her being nominated for both Worst Leading Actress and Worst Supporting Actor (officially for Brooke Shields wearing a moustache) of 1984 (the movie was released at the end of 1983 for the UK, but in 1984 for the US market). Brooke would only win the latter award. The Worst Leading Actress of 1984 award was won by Bo Derek for the movie "Bolero".
4. Two women tied for the Worst Leading Actress Award of 2002; one for the movie "Swept Away", the other for "Crossroads". Both are perhaps better known for their music and they recorded a song together in 2003 called "Me Against the Music". Who are the two women involved?

Answer: Madonna and Britney Spears

Madonna and Britney Spears both won the Razzie for Worst Leading Actress of 2002. Madonna won for the movie "Swept Away", a comedy movie directed by her husband, Guy Ritchie. Madonna plays the role of a very demanding woman, who gets taken on a cruise by her husband. She takes her anger out on the first mate, but ends up shipwrecked with him. The movie took a total of five awards at the Razzies, including those for Worst Director (for Guy Ritchie) and Worst Screen Couple (for Madonna and co-star Adriano Giannini). Madonna is no stranger to winning a Razzie. Before 2002 she had won the category Worst Leading Actress four times already. She also won for Worst Supporting Actress of 2002 for "Die Another Day".

Britney Spears won the Razzie for "Crossroads", a road movie about three teenage girls finding friendship. A total of eight nominations at the Razzie Awards followed, including one for Most Flatulent Teen-Targeted Movie (which went to "Jackass: The Movie" in the end). Eventually two awards were won, the Worst Leading Actress award for Britney Spears and the Worst Original Song for Britney's song "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman".
5. In the show for 1996 there was a tie for the Worst Leading Actor award. One of the winners was Pauly Shore. The other actor winning for that year won for a total of three movies: "Big Bully", "Carpool" and "The Stupids". He is also famous as a writer for the TV-series "Roseanne" and for being married to its star Roseanne Barr between 1990 and 1994. Who is this actor?

Answer: Tom Arnold

Thomas Dwaine Arnold was born on March 6th, 1959 in Ottumwa, Iowa, USA. He has worked as a comedian, which is how he met his wife Roseanne Barr. He was also a writer for the TV-series "Roseanne". In 1994 he had one of his most famous movie roles, starring alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in "True Lies". Later he would go on to host the talk show "The Best Damn Sports Show Period" on the Fox Channel.

The year 1996 was obviously not one of his best movie years. First off he starred alongside Rick Moranis in "Big Bully", with Tom playing the role of a school bully meeting his former victim years later. His next movie was "Carpool", in which he starred alongside David Paymer and Rod Steiger. Paymer played a business man having to take over his wife's carpool. Things quickly get worse, when the group is confronted and kidnapped by a robber (played by Arnold). The final movie that year for Tom Arnold was "The Stupids", where he played the father of a family that does their last name (Stupid) proud. All three movies were not a success, which led to Tom Arnold winning the Razzie for Worst Leading Actor.
6. If your acting career does not take off, you can always change careers. One actress won the Razzie for Worst Leading Actress for both 1982 and 1983, for her appearances in "Butterfly" and "The Lonely Lady". She would later go into music and score a big hit alongside Jermaine Jackson with the song "When the Rain Begins To Fall". Who is this actress/singer?

Answer: Pia Zadora

Pia Alfreda Schipani (also known as Pia Zadora) was born on May 4th, 1954 in Hoboken, New Jersey. She shot to fame in the movie "Butterfly" in 1981, which earned a Golden Globe award for New Star of the Year. It did not prevent the movie from receiving eight nominations for a Razzie award, eventually winning three. Not only did Zadora win the Razzie for Worst Leading Actress of 1982, she also won Worst New Star. The other Razzie went to Ed McMahon, who won Worst Supporting Actor. The movie is about the trial of a caretaker, who is accused of doing improper things to his daughter. Pia Zadora played the daughter.

For 1983, Pia Zadora would once again win the Razzie for Worst Leading Actress. She won the award for the movie "The Lonely Lady". In this movie Zadora played a screenwriter struggling with her divorce and being raped years ago at a party. The movie did even worse at the Razzies than "Butterfly", earning no less than 11 nominations, eventually winning six awards, including Worst Picture and Worst Director. Zadora also won Worst New Star for this movie.
7. The winner of the Worst Supporting Actor of 1994 for the movie "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult" is someone who isn't best known for his acting. He was a professional football player nicknamed "The Juice", but he is probably best known for a trial in 1995, where he was accused of murdering his wife and a friend of hers. Who is this former Razzie winner?

Answer: O.J. Simpson

Orenthal James Simpson was born on July 9th, 1947 in San Francisco, USA. He had a long professional football career that started in 1969, after a successful college career. In this period he earned the nickname "The Juice", which is derived from orange juice (also shortened as O.J.). In 1985 he made it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The murder trial in 1995, where he was accused of murdering his wife, Nicole, and her friend, Ron Goldman, drew a lot of media attention. After he was acquitted, a civil suit was filed in 1997.

After his football career, he switched to making movies. He starred in movies like "The Cassandra Crossing", "The Towering Inferno" and "Back to the Beach". He also starred in the first three "Naked Gun" movies about police officer Frank Drebin, portrayed by Leslie Nielsen. O.J. Simpson starred as Detective Nordberg. The third part of the movies called "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult" was nominated for two Razzies, winning both. Other than the award for O.J. Simpson as Worst Supporting Actor, Anna Nicole Smith won an award for Worst New Star.
8. If you are from a wealthy family and money isn't exactly a problem, it is not too hard to try your hand at making movies as well. It does not save you from criticism and winning a Razzie, though, as one actress found out. Who is the TV star and social butterfly to win Worst Leading Actress of 2008 for the movie "The Hottie and the Nottie"?

Answer: Paris Hilton

Paris Whitney Hilton was born on February 17th, 1981 in New York City, USA. She is the great-granddaughter of Conrad Hilton, the founder of the Hilton Hotels hotel chain. She is known for everything from acting and singing to making her appearance in several reality shows on TV. Those shows include "The Simple Life" with her friend, Nicole Richie (daughter of singer Lionel Richie), and "Paris Hilton My New BFF".

Paris' acting career started with several small roles (known as cameos) in movies. In 2005 she had a bigger role in "House of Wax", alongside Elisha Cuthbert and Chad Michael Murray. She immediately won a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress of 2005 for this movie and things did not improve later. She went one step up winning Worst Leading Actress for her appearance in the 2008 movie "The Hottie and the Nottie". In this movie, Paris starred as a beautiful girl who is friends with a more unattractive girl. A former flame of hers wants to go out with her, but she refuses to, until her friend also gets a date. The film was not well received by most critics and would go on to win two Razzies in total, the other being for Worst Screen Couple.
9. You don't actually have to be an actor to win a Razzie, as a politician found out after being featured in this 2004 film. Who won the Worst Leading Actor award for his "part" in the Michael Moore documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11"?

Answer: George W. Bush

George Walker Bush was born on July 6th, 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. In 1995 he became the Governor of Texas. In 2001 he was elected as the 43rd President of the USA, eventually serving two terms. During his presidency the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001 took place, which followed a "War on Terror". Bush was heavily criticised for his handling of the terrorist attack and the actions that followed it. One of the critics was movie director, Michael Moore, who put his criticism in the form of a documentary called "Fahrenheit 9/11", released in 2004.

The movie "Fahrenheit 9/11 won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004. There was much attention for the documentary at the Razzies, and it won no less than four awards. Apart from the award for Bush, there was also a Worst Supporting Actor award for politician Donald Rumsfeld (the Secretary of Defense at the time) and a Worst Supporting Actress award for Britney Spears (beating Condoleezza Rice, the Secretary of State, who was also nominated for this documentary). The final award was for Worst Screen Couple, for George W. Bush, either paired with Condoleezza Rice or a pet goat.
10. We already saw a Razzie go to a female character in a male role. The reverse is also possible. Which actor, known for movies like "Beverly Hills Cop" and "The Nutty Professor", won Worst Supporting Actress for his role in the 2007 movie "Norbit"?

Answer: Eddie Murphy

Edward Regan Murphy was born on April 3rd, 1961 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He worked as a stand-up comedian before launching into a movie career. He starred in popular movies like "48 Hours", "Beverly Hills Cop", "The Nutty Professor" and "Doctor Dolittle". In 2007 he starred in the movie "Norbit", a comedy in which he played alongside Thandie Newton. They used to be friends when they were younger, but lost track of each other. In the meantime he marries another woman, but meets up with his lost love again later. Question is whether his bullying and dominant wife will stand for it.

In the movie "Norbit", Eddie plays multiple roles, including the title character, the owner of the orphanage where Norbit and his former love Kate meet and also the role of Norbit's obese and dominant wife, Rasputia. For the latter role he won the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress of 2007. It wasn't exactly Eddie's year at the Razzies, as he also Worst Leading Actor (for his portrayal of Norbit) and Worst Supporting Actor (for the part of Mr. Wong, the orphanage owner). The movie was nominated for a further three awards, but fortunately for Eddie those awards were won by others.
