Classic Movies for Experts Trivia Questions

1. In which film is Richard Hannay an innocent bystander, caught in a web of intrigue when a beautiful spy is killed in his apartment? He escapes by train to the Scottish Highlands, pursued by the police and an enemy spy organisation.

From Quiz
Classic Films of the '30s, '40s and '50s.

Answer: The 39 Steps

This is one of Alfred Hitchcock's finest spy films, based on the 1915 John Buchan classic novel, and starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. In the book the 39 steps refers to the number of steps on a cliff, where a German spy ring will smuggle secrets offshore to the steam yacht 'Ariadne'. In the film it refers to the name of the actual spy organisation. The other films were also directed by Hitchcock. "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1934) was Hitchcock's last film prior to making "The 39 Steps" in 1935 and "Secret Agent" and "Sabotage" were the films he made immediately following, in 1936.

2. Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable worked together in "Boom Town". Both were interested in the same woman. Who was she?

From Quiz When Legends Work Together

Answer: Claudette Colbert

This was an enjoyable movie with two top stars. (Gable got the girl.) Heddy Lamarr was also in the cast. (Tracy and Gable also teamed in "San Francisco".)

3. Jack Lemmon's character is killed at the end of "The China Syndrome". Why?

From Quiz Sad Endings

Answer: Whistle-blowing

Jack knows (or strongly suspects) that the nuclear plant is unsafe. He wants to blow the whistle, but others are opposed to the idea.

4. Arthur Kennedy turns up in a variety of fine movies - and always does a first class job. He played a composer in "City for Conquest"; who played his boxer brother?

From Quiz Classic Supporting Actors

Answer: James Cagney

James Cagney does a good job (as always)in this enjoyable movie. Curiously, Kennedy again played the younger brother to a boxer when he co-starred with Kirk Douglas in "Champion". John Garfield starred in the boxing movie "Body and Soul". Steve McQueen starred with Kennedy in "Nevada Smith".

5. In "Fail Safe", President Henry Fonda decides to make up for the destruction of a Soviet city by voluntarily destroying an American one. Which U.S. city does he select?

From Quiz Moral Issues in Movies

Answer: New York

Interesting issue. To maintain the uneasy "balance" of the Cold War, the President avoids major conflict by killing millions of people. Hard to believe it could ever happen. Could it be justified: the certain death of many versus the possible death of so many more?

6. Norman Fell was fine in his comedic role as Mr. Roper in "Three's Company" - but he also turned in fine dramatic performances. Which movie included him in the cast?

From Quiz Classic TV Actors in Movie Roles

Answer: Bullitt

From Quiz Great Roles the Stars Bypassed

Answer: Vera Miles

Miles was the actress of choice for the role - but she got pregnant. Hitchcock was not a happy camper.

11. Alan Ladd's best movie was definitely "Shane". Van Heflin did a great job in a supporting role as the farmer. Who played Heflin's wife?

Her last role - and a good one. With Jack Palance, Ben Johnson and the unlucky Brandon de Wilde as the little boy. One of the best westerns ever (if not the best.)
