1970s and 1980s Australian Music Trivia Questions

1. "Horror movie, right there on my TV Horror movie, right there on my TV Horror movie, and there's known abuse Horror Movie it's _____________" What shocked Skyhooks right out of their brains?

From Quiz
Australian Music: '70s "Countdown"

Answer: The six thirty news

"Horror Movie" was the second single from Skyhooks "Living in the Seventies" album. It was their first number 1 hit in Australia. When Skyhooks first appeared on "Countdown" their bass player (Greg Macainsh) was in hospital. So Red Symons's girlfriend (Jenny Keath) dressed up like Greg and did the gig. Lead singer, Graeme "Shirley" Strachan tragically died in 2001 when he crashed his helicopter on Queensland's Sunshine coast.

2. The early 80s pub rock scene spawned a band called Dee Minor and The ______.

3. "U.S forces give the nod...." -- The song "U.S. Forces"

From Quiz Australian Songs and Singers

Answer: Midnight Oil.

Formed in 1976, the band Midnight Oil was originally named 'Farm'. They performed on the back of a truck outside the Exxon building in New York. In my opinion, Midnight Oil offers music with a conscience, an environmental awareness, accompanied by a sound that makes you bop away and words that make you want to do something, anything. I saw The 'Oils' in the early 1990s at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and was totally blown away. Other songs include "Best Of Both Worlds", "Beds are Burning" and my personal favourite "Blue Sky Mine".

4. What are the missing words in this song? "Travelling in a fried-out combie, on a hippy trail, head full full of zombie. I met a strange lady,____________________".

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Few songs boast such an iconic status in the Australian rock songbook. These lines come from the song "Down Under", by "Men at Work". This was the first single released from "Business as Usual".

From Quiz Finish the Lyric: 1980s Australian Classics

Answer: "go running along your street"

"Throw Your Arms Around Me" by "Hunters and Collectors" was by no means a big hit when it was released in 1988. It has left a lasting impression, however. In 1999 it was found in a poll to be more familiar to a sample of Australians than the national anthem! For some reason as well, it seems to be the song of choice among cricket spectators watching the Australian team play in England - during the tours in 1997 and 2001 the rowdy Aussies nearly drowned out the TV commentators!
