Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From the summer of 1970, this siren-wailing song was a big hit in Brisbane for R Dean Taylor.

Answer: Indiana Wants Me

"Indiana Wants Me" landed in the top end of the charts in Brisbane, Perth and Hobart at the end of 1970, and was also a major national hit in both the USA and UK. Taylor was the first white man to record for the Tamla Motown label, and co-wrote "Love Child" for Diana Ross & The Supremes.

The other songs mentioned are "Mississippi" by John Phillips, "Can't Wait For September", by Pyramid and "High Sheriff Of Calhoun County", by Tony Joe White.
2. In early 1971, this British act had a hit in Brisbane with "Baby, I Won't Let You Down".

Answer: Pickettywitch

"Baby, I Won't Let You Down" was the follow up hit to the more popular "That Same Old Feeling", which charted nationally in 1970. Pickettywitch was fronted by Polly Browne, who had a solo 70's hit with "Up In A Puff Of Smoke".
3. The spectacularly-named group Edison Lighthouse had a duo of hits during 1970 and 1971, each referring to a girl's name in their titles. Name those girls from these choices.

Answer: Rosemary and Petula

Everyone has heard of "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)", which was a universal hit in 1970. The lesser known hits by Edison Lighthouse include "She Works In A Woman's Way" and "It's Up To You Petula". "Melanie Makes Me Smile" was also recorded by Tony Burrows, who fronted Edison Lighthouse.
4. A top 5 hit in Brisbane for Allondee, was "Wait For ..."

Answer: Summer

This was possibly the most obscure top 5 hit of the decade, and today is rarely heard, if ever. Other than the Brisbane market, "Wait For Summer" was a hit for a different artist, Jack Wilde, in Adelaide, possibly the only other place on Earth the song was a hit!
5. Elvis Presley was as popular in Brisbane as any other place. Of a double-sided hit in 1970, Elvis scored primarily in Brisbane with "Patch It Up". What was the name of the flip side (a hit in other cities)?

Answer: You Don't Have To Say You Love Me

Because of his popularity, it was normal for most Elvis records to be regarded as double-sided hits. At that time, the USA charts listed each side of a record as separate hits, whereas Australian charts combined the ratings of the individual sides together for the purposes of calculating chart positions of the record, rather than just each song.
6. Charting in the USA and Brisbane in 1970, this song was a hit for a West Coast band called Crabby Appleton.

Answer: Go Back

The strength of sales in Brisbane pushed "Go Back" to the dizzying heights of #77 nationally. It lasted in the national charts for less than 2 months, although it at least scored top 20 in South East Queensland. Crabby Appleton was never heard of again ....
7. Toward the end of 1970, a movie theme hit #1 in Brisbane for the Mike Curb Congregation.

Answer: Burning Bridges

"Burning Bridges" was the popular theme from the movie "Kelly's Heroes", a comedy starring Clint Eastwood, about an oddball group of soldiers in World War II who plan to steal a payroll from the Germans.
The other titles mentioned are "Airport Love Theme" (Airport), "Morning After" (Poseidon Adventure) and "One Tin Soldier" (Billy Jack)
8. "Never Marry A Railroad Man" was a big Brisbane hit for the Dutch group Shocking Blue. Was this song the Brisbane follow up for their world wide smash hit "Venus"?

Answer: No

In between "Venus" and "Railroad Man" came the catchy "Mighty Joe", which charted in May 1970, some four months earlier than "Never Marry A Railroad Man".
9. One of Russell Morris' greatest hits was "Mr America". In Brisbane, this record was regarded as a double sided hit. What was the name of the other song on this record which enabled this to be?

Answer: Stand Together

"Stand Together" combined nicely with "Mr America" to provide some light political commentary of the early 1970's, and along with "Rachel", brought out some anti-Vietnam war feelings, which at the time were popular sentiments in Australia.
10. This group provided two chart hits in Brisbane in 1970. The songs were "Which Way You Goin' Billy?" and "That's Where I Went Wrong". What was the name of the group?

Answer: The Poppy Family

This soft rock group from Canada will hardly be remembered for these mid range hits in Brisbane, although one member, Terry Jacks, has provided many of us with memories of the massive hit "Seasons In The Sun", which topped the charts throughout the world in 1974.
