The ending verse of each stanza, and the chorus of the song, is "God only knows what I'd be without you." The song is typically classified as belonging to the baroque pop genre. 5. Brian Wilson wrote the lyrics for "Surfin' U.S.A." but it is set to the music of a hit song released in the '50s. Who wrote the original music?

From Quiz The Music of The Beach Boys (Surfin' U.S.A.)

Answer: Chuck Berry

"Surfin' U.S.A.", written by Brian Wilson, peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Beach Boys in 1963. It peaked at number 34 on the UK singles chart the same year. Brian Wilson was dating a girl whose brother was a surfer. Brian was humming the melody to "Sweet Little Sixteen' and asked the girl's brother for a list of surfing spots and put them and the melody together. "Sweet Little Sixteen", written by Chuck Berry, peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958. It peaked at number 16 on the UK singles chart the same year. On release "Surfin' U.S.A." only listed Brian Wilson as writer; later issues recognized Chuck Berry's contribution.

6. Which Beach Boy Capitol single was released first in the USA?

From Quiz Beach Boys Singles

Answer: Surfin' Safari

"Surfin' Safari" was the first on Capitol. Released in June '62 Surfin" was the first release ever, but it was on Candix and the X label in December '61.

7. Which artist or group did NOT record "Don't Worry Baby"?

From Quiz Beach Boy Cover Tunes

Answer: Tony Rivers and the Castaways

The Ivy League is a British group who released an album on Cameo in the USA around '65 with "Don't Worry Baby". This one has a very slow tempo without much production behind the backing track. What saves this one is the excellent lead vocal and harmonies. Grade B Love Society released this single on RCA in the USA circa '68. It's a very laidback mellow version with barely any harmony. Grade C Fun & Games released an album on UNI in '68 in the USA with "Don't Worry Baby". Gary Zekely wrote half the songs on the LP titled "Elephant Candy". "Don't Worry Baby" has a bit of a faster tempo but still somewhat laidback with plenty of harpsichord surrounding the vocals. Grade B+ Tony Rivers and the Castaways did several Beach Boy songs but not this one.

8. 'I tell you surfing's mighty wild. It's getting bigger every day. From Hawaii to the shores of Peru.' Name the track.

9. Which record by The Beach Boys with these lyrics was the first to reach the UK Top Ten? "I'm a real cool head I'm makin' real good bread"

From Quiz The Music of The Beach Boys (Surfin' U.K.)

Answer: I Get Around

"I Get Around" was a number seven hit for The Beach Boys on the UK singles chart and a number one hit for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. "I Get Around" was written by Brian Wilson/Mike Love. It was originally only credited to Brian Wilson but in 1992 Mike Love filed a successful lawsuit claiming credit and royalties on a number of The Beach Boys' songs including "I Get Around". On the record Mike Love is the lead vocal on the verses and Brian Wilson is the lead vocal on the choruses. The B-Side "Don't Worry Baby" was a chart hit in it's own right and reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 also in 1964. The first album by The Beach Boys to include "I Get Around" was "All Summer Long" which reached number four on the Billboard album chart in 1964. It did not enter the UK album chart. "Surfin' U.S.A." written by Brian Wilson/Chuck Berry was the first UK chart entry by The Beach Boys. It reached number 34 on the UK singles chart and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. However on Candix, "Surfin" was the original spelling in the USA. In Canada it was spelled "Surfin' " with the apostrophe on its' single. The Regents reformed and the Roulette/Gee label was granted distribution for the renamed "Barbara Ann", eventually becoming a Number 13 hit in the US. The Marcels hit the top slot in 1961 with "Blue Moon". 14. The Beach Boys were largely a family outfit, formed by three brothers, a cousin and a family friend. Two of the brothers were named Brian and Carl. What is the third brother's name?

From Quiz Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: The Beach Boys

Answer: Dennis

The Beach Boys were formed in Hawthorne, California (a Los Angeles suburb) in 1961. The three brothers were joined by their older cousin Mike Love and close friend Alan Jardine to start a band which would eventually come to document the Los Angeles scene at the time. Hot rods, surfing, pretty girls and cruising the scene would all become staples of The Beach Boys' sound.

15. A single release from their 1965 album "Beach Boys' Party!", "Barbara Ann" became a hit for the Beach Boys. Who had the original hit with the song four years earlier?

From Quiz Beach Boy Cover Songs

Answer: The Regents

"Barbara Ann" was composed by Fred Fassert. The Regents included the song on their album of the same name in 1961. Other members include Sal Cuomo as first tenor, Chuck Fassert singing second tenor, Tony Gravagna playing sax and Don Jacobucci on bass. Brian Wilson was obligated for one more track on the "Beach Boys' Party!" album. He chose "Barbara Ann" and sang lead on the song along with Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean. From Quiz The Music of The Beach Boys (Surfin' U.S.A.)

Answer: Ford

"Fun, Fun, Fun" written by Brian Wilson/Mike Love peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 for The beach Boys in 1964. It did not chart in the UK. The overbearing Murry Wilson (the father of Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson) was The Beach Boys' business manager and co-producer at the time. He tried to prevent The Beach Boys from recording "Fun, Fun, Fun" because he thought that the song was immoral. The B-Side was a cover version of Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers' 1956 hit "Why Do Fools Fall In Love". "Fun, Fun, Fun" finally made it into the UK singles chart 1996 when British rock band Status Quo recorded a version of the song featuring The Beach Boys. It peaked at number 24. The Beach Boys sing the backing vocals and Status Quo's Francis Rossi sings lead except for a new verse which is sung by Mike Love.
