Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When they entered the studio to record "Surfin" as a demo, what name were the boys using for their band?

Answer: Pendletones

The boys wore Pendelton patterned shirts and therefore called themselves the Pendletones. Murray Wilson, father of three of the Beach Boys, and their original manager, later changed their outfits to vertical striped shirts with chino pants, which gave them more of a surfer image.
2. Who was responsible for changing the band's name to The Beach Boys?

Answer: The man who produced their demo of "Surfin"

When their demo session had ended, the producer packed up the tape for shipment. The outside of the tape was labeled "Pendletones". The producer scratched out that name and wrote "Beach Boys" on the tag instead.
3. Which Beatles album was the inspiration for Pet Sounds?

Answer: Rubber Soul

Brian Wilson created Pet Sounds as a "reply" to Rubber Soul. Conversely, the Beatles created "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" as a "reply" to Pet Sounds.
4. In concert, the Beach Boys were introduced individually to the audience. Which song did they play for the introduction?

Answer: Little Deuce Coupe

Mike Love introduced each of the Beach Boys by having them play their part of the song Little Deuce Coupe. Mike himself was never introduced.
5. Bruce Johnston was the first person to fill in for Brian Wilson during concert tours after Brian stopped touring with the Beach Boys.

Answer: False

Glen Campbell was the first person to fill in for Brian Wilson at concerts. After Glenn became successful on his own Bruce Johnston was asked to perform with the Beach Boys.
6. It is rumored that Al Jardine left the Beach Boys for a short time to pursue education leading to a career in which field?

Answer: Dentistry

Al was in school when the "Surfer Girl" album was recorded. During his absence a young man by the name of David Marks joined the group. Al decided to leave Dental School and return to be part of the Beach Boys again. David voluntarily left the group after Al's return.
7. Murray Wilson was father to three of the Beach Boys, uncle to one, and manager for the group. When did he stop being their manager?

Answer: When Brian fired him during a recording session

Murray Wilson drove the group hard and was consistently disruptive during their recording sessions. During one particular session he upset Brian so badly that Brian fired him in front of the entire band and the recording technicians.
8. Jan and Dean owe part of their success to Brian Wilson. Why?

Answer: He wrote "Surf City" for them

Not only did Brian write "Surf City", which became a hit, he sang backup vocals. Murray Wilson wasn't pleased with Brian's benevolence.
9. One weekend Brian's parents went away and left him $200 to pay for food for him and his brothers. What did they actually do with the money?

Answer: Rented instruments so they could tape a song Brian had written

The group rented instruments and taped their efforts so that their father, who was a musician in his early years, could listen to it upon his return. At first, Murray was quite upset with the boys, but felt that he could help them start their career when he heard their tape.
10. Which Beatle paid Brian Wilson the ultimate compliment by stating that "God Only Knows" was the most beautiful pop song ever recorded?

Answer: Paul McCartney

The Beatles greatly admired Brian Wilson's compositions as Brian admired theirs.
