Stone Roses Trivia Questions

1. "Listen here / sweet child of mine, have I got news for you? / Nobody leaves this place alive. / They'll die here, join the queue, sing it.." Which Stone Roses song is this?

From Quiz
The Stone Roses - Legends

Answer: Breaking Into Heaven

"I_______I-I'm gonna break right into Heaven!" Come on everyone, join in! Or maybe not. "Breaking Into Heaven", a staggering 11 minutes long, is the first track on the "Second Coming" album, released a whole 5 years after the band's self-titled début album!

2. Ripped up pieces of red, white and denim-coloured fabric with some writing on them?

From Quiz Stone Roses album and singles artwork

Answer: One Love

"That's another favourite. My brother photographed it and it was a little out of focus, I wasn't happy with it, but the deadline had gone for the artwork. The band were adamant it looked like a swastika, so we had to change it. Someone's released the shirt now. I've seen people wearing it and I don't think 'What's that **** doing with a swastika on his chest?' That was inspired by the Italia 90 logo and a Duckham's oil can. It's one of the few I took the time to paint on a canvas and stretch over a frame. A lot of the others are on bits of calico and stuffed in boxes. This one's in a large, plywood storage box near Morecambe with all my other possessions." John Squire, 1998

3. What record company was their first album released by?

From Quiz Stone Roses History

Answer: Silvertone

Although Silvertone was a new label at the time, the Roses chose to sign with them in hopes they would be the flagship band of the record company.

4. "Are we etched in stone or just scratched in the sand" is from which Roses tune?

From Quiz The Stone Roses Lyrics Quiz

Answer: Tightrope

"Are we etched in stone or just scratched in the sand, waiting for the waves to come and reclaim the land?" Tightrope is full of excellent lyrics and has some lovely chord changes. This song is found on the "Second Coming" album.

5. Greenish Pollock background with lemon slices used as the letter "O"?

From Quiz Stone Roses album and singles artwork

Answer: Stone Roses Self Titled

"The lemons aren't a part of the picture, they're real lemons nailed on because it was photographed on the wall - the photographer didn't have a rostrum camera. It ties in with the lyrics of 'Bye Bye Badman', to do with the Paris student uprisings in May 1968. Me and Ian saw a documentary on it and liked the clothes: there was a guy chucking stones, with a really nice jacket and desert boots. The students used to suck on lemons to nullify the effects of the tear gas. That's why the tricolor is there. The green is inspired by the water at the Giant's Causeway in Ireland, where we went before a gig at Coleraine University." -John Squire, 1998

6. What part did Ian Brown originally play in the band?

From Quiz Stone Roses History

Answer: Bass

Although he started on bass, Ian's stage presence, unique voice, and magnetic personality meant he eventually would go on to assume the role of lead vocals and become the benchmark of cool for every frontman to come after.

7. "Burn the town where I was born"

From Quiz The Stone Roses Lyrics Quiz

Answer: This Is The One

This definitely is the one! My favourite tune from my all-time favourite album, their eponymously titled debut album.

8. Can you name the song for which these are the opening lines? "Hell hath no fury like / a woman scorned. I'll tell you my story man, I wish I'd / never been born."

From Quiz The Stone Roses - Legends

Answer: Good Times

"I'm loose at the seams, I've broken my dreams! And my hand, it shakes the pen." Sorry I'm doing it again aren't I? This song was also taken from the much criticised "Second Coming" as the band broke away from the melodic pop sound of their first ablum, in favour of a much more "rock-y" sound.

9. Two golden dolphins with a burst of yellow/white?

From Quiz Stone Roses album and singles artwork

Answer: Fools Gold

"Double Dorsal Doppelganger - There's no real connection with 'Fools Gold', although I could stretch it to the purity of dolphin life over the avarice of human life. It's a con, that. It's photographed through that dappled glass you get in bedroom windows." -John Squire, 1998

10. What label was their first single released on?

From Quiz Stone Roses History

Answer: Thinline Records

Although their first album was released on Silvertone, the Roses were with a few different companies early in their career; the first to release anything was Thinline Records.

11. "She'll carry on through it all, she's a ....."

From Quiz The Stone Roses Lyrics Quiz

Answer: Waterfall

"Waterfall" was one of three singles to be released from the debut album after the Roses had left the Silvertone label. "I Wanna Be Adored" and a shorter version of "I am the Resurrection" were the other two.

12. Which was the first single?

From Quiz Stone Roses History

Answer: So Young

Only about 1200 copies were pressed, making this an extremely valuable item.

13. "I put you on my shoulder"

From Quiz The Stone Roses Lyrics Quiz

Answer: How Do You Sleep

"When all the fun was over, I put you on my shoulder, took you home away from it all". This, along with "Ten Storey Love Song", was written not long after the debut album was released but due to the change of record label and the lengthy court battle, and the laziness of certain band members, it took almost 5 years to emerge on the "Second Coming" album.

14. "Here comes the wise man, and there goes the fool. You see the burnt out world that he's living in, I don't need to look for the rules." Which Roses' track is this?

From Quiz The Stone Roses - Legends

Answer: What The World Is Waiting For

Doesn't get enough credit this one but it's still a beast! "What The World Is Waiting For" is taken from the "Turns Into Stone" album, which was, in truth their second album, the record company collecting European B-sides in an attempt to keep impatient fans happy.

15. Who was the original drummer for the band?

From Quiz Stone Roses History

Answer: Simon Woolstencroft

Simon was the orginal drummer but was eventually replaced by Reni. He went on to play in The Fall, but before that played with a lesser-known band called The Weeds.

16. "Wake up and see the light"

From Quiz The Stone Roses Lyrics Quiz

Answer: Ten Storey Love Song

"Ten Storey Love Song" was released as a single in February 1995, but as stated in my info for the previous question, it was written some years earlier.

17. (Lead singer) Ian Brown says, "You see it in the sea, river cool's where I belong.." in which song?

From Quiz The Stone Roses - Legends

Answer: Mersey Paradise

Taken from the song "Mersey Paradise", "...you see it in the sea, river cool's where I belong, in my Mersey Paradise!" A song close to my heart, being a Merseysider, though I never much understood why a band from Manchester would sing such things!

18. Why did Andy Couzens leave the band?

From Quiz Stone Roses History

Answer: Dispute over publishing royalties

Despite not having made any money off of publishing deals at the time, one day John and Ian arrived at rehearsal and announced that they would receive all publishing royalties as they were the chief song writers. Andy was unhappy that his long-time friends would do this to him and thought they were being greedy, so he quit.

19. "You can't see the wood for the trees"

From Quiz The Stone Roses Lyrics Quiz

Answer: Something Burning

"Something Burning" was the B-side to "One Love", which was the Roses' final single whilst signed to Silvertone, reaching # 4 in the UK Charts at the height of the Manchester scene.

20. "I pop pop pop / blow blow bubblegum girl, you taste of cherryade. There is something here you must show me / from what you are made..." Which song is this?

From Quiz The Stone Roses - Legends

Answer: Sally Cinnamon

Of course it is, and shame on anyone who got this one wrong! If you did, you're probably not a fan and getting low scores on music quizzes is not the way to climb the Fun Trivia ladder is it? Something to think about. This single actually has a similar sound to "Mersey Paradise" and sadly, repetition of sounds was an accusation thrown at the Roses by the majority of fans and critics alike.

21. What day was the Spike Island festival held?

From Quiz Stone Roses History

Answer: 27 May 1990

The Roses and their management team organized this festival in part to avert traditional festivals(like Glastonbury and Reading), which they thought to be too corporate and mainstream.

22. "I am the garage flower"

From Quiz The Stone Roses Lyrics Quiz

Answer: Tell Me

"Tell Me" and "So Young" were released as a Double-A side for the band's debut single. Both songs lack the quality of their later efforts but you can't blame them for early songs being poorer than the debut album.

23. "I have her on her promise, immerse me in your splendour, all the plans that I have made..." What's the title of this early Roses classic?

From Quiz The Stone Roses - Legends

Answer: This Is The One

Shocking revelations were made recently about a possible reunion for the band! Ian Brown once said on this, "You could offer me Mars and Jupiter and it still wouldn't be enough." But it seems that former Stone Roses bassist Mani would like to record new material with Ian Brown, "I was speaking to Ian last night, and I'd rather play with him on some new tunes (than previous material)." Quote taken from Sky One's "Tim Lovejoy And The Allstars" on September 29 2004.

24. What was the highest chart position of any single they released?

From Quiz Stone Roses History

Answer: 2 & two & second

They accomplished this with the debut single off their second album, "The Second Coming", which was "Love Spreads".

25. "Show me a vision, your wild apparition"

From Quiz The Stone Roses Lyrics Quiz

Answer: One Love

"One love, one heart and one soul. You can have it all. Easy peasy". "One Love" and "Fools Gold" were both released after the debut album and were intended to be on their second album but, as stated above, the album never materialised for another five years, by which point both songs were out of date.

26. "You should have been an angel, it would have suited you. My gold- leafed triptych angel, she knows just what to do." What's the name of this tune?

From Quiz The Stone Roses - Legends

Answer: Tightrope

Did you know that Roses bass player Mani appeared as a warm up DJ for the tribute band calling themselves, "The Complete Stone Roses" even playing "She Bangs The Drums" at 3 consecutive gigs with the lads?

27. Why were the Stone Roses forced to cancel their performance at Glastonbury in 1995?

From Quiz Stone Roses History

Answer: John Squire broke his collarbone

This is widely considered to be the beginning of the end for the band. Squire eventually recovered and in late 1995 the band mounted a half-hearted UK tour with lukewarm reaction from fans.In early 1996 Squire quit and was replaced with Aziz Ibrahim. The band played Reading in 1996, but with only two members of the lineup many had grown accustomed to, the reception was less than friendly. Later that year, Ian announced that the Stone Roses were done.

28. "I'd rather be no one than someone with no one"

From Quiz The Stone Roses Lyrics Quiz

Answer: Here It Comes

That is one of my all-time favourite lyrics. "Here It Comes" was a B-Side to "Sally Cinnamon", a single released before the Roses got their record deal with Silvertone.

29. "In the misery dictionary, page after page after page. In the misery dictionary, page after page!" Which song is this one?

From Quiz The Stone Roses - Legends

Answer: So Young

"So Young" was the first record that the Roses put out (as a double A-side with "Tell Me"). Its original title was "Misery Dictionary" but was changed as the band wanted to distance themselves from fellow Manchester-based band "The Smiths" (a band known for the unhappy nature of their songs).
