Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What record company was their first album released by?

Answer: Silvertone

Although Silvertone was a new label at the time, the Roses chose to sign with them in hopes they would be the flagship band of the record company.
2. What part did Ian Brown originally play in the band?

Answer: Bass

Although he started on bass, Ian's stage presence, unique voice, and magnetic personality meant he eventually would go on to assume the role of lead vocals and become the benchmark of cool for every frontman to come after.
3. What label was their first single released on?

Answer: Thinline Records

Although their first album was released on Silvertone, the Roses were with a few different companies early in their career; the first to release anything was Thinline Records.
4. Which was the first single?

Answer: So Young

Only about 1200 copies were pressed, making this an extremely valuable item.
5. Who was the original drummer for the band?

Answer: Simon Woolstencroft

Simon was the orginal drummer but was eventually replaced by Reni. He went on to play in The Fall, but before that played with a lesser-known band called The Weeds.
6. Why did Andy Couzens leave the band?

Answer: Dispute over publishing royalties

Despite not having made any money off of publishing deals at the time, one day John and Ian arrived at rehearsal and announced that they would receive all publishing royalties as they were the chief song writers. Andy was unhappy that his long-time friends would do this to him and thought they were being greedy, so he quit.
7. What day was the Spike Island festival held?

Answer: 27 May 1990

The Roses and their management team organized this festival in part to avert traditional festivals(like Glastonbury and Reading), which they thought to be too corporate and mainstream.
8. What was the highest chart position of any single they released?

Answer: 2

They accomplished this with the debut single off their second album, "The Second Coming", which was "Love Spreads".
9. Why were the Stone Roses forced to cancel their performance at Glastonbury in 1995?

Answer: John Squire broke his collarbone

This is widely considered to be the beginning of the end for the band. Squire eventually recovered and in late 1995 the band mounted a half-hearted UK tour with lukewarm reaction from fans.In early 1996 Squire quit and was replaced with Aziz Ibrahim. The band played Reading in 1996, but with only two members of the lineup many had grown accustomed to, the reception was less than friendly. Later that year, Ian announced that the Stone Roses were done.
10. Contained in the press release when Ian announced that the Stone Roses were over, what did he say he had done for the last ten years?

Answer: Spent it in the filthiest business in the universe

"Having spent the last ten years in the filthiest business in the universe it's a pleasure to announce the end of the Stone Roses. May God bless all who gave us their love and supported us throughout this time, special thanks to the people of Manchester who sent us on our way. Peace be upon you." -Ian Brown, Manchester, 29 October 1996.
