Although Silvertone was a new label at the time, the Roses chose to sign with them in hopes they would be the flagship band of the record company.

Although he started on bass, Ian's stage presence, unique voice, and magnetic personality meant he eventually would go on to assume the role of lead vocals and become the benchmark of cool for every frontman to come after.

Although their first album was released on Silvertone, the Roses were with a few different companies early in their career; the first to release anything was Thinline Records.

Squire eventually recovered and in late 1995 the band mounted a half-hearted UK tour with lukewarm reaction from fans.In early 1996 Squire quit and was replaced with Aziz Ibrahim. The band played Reading in 1996, but with only two members of the lineup many had grown accustomed to, the reception was less than friendly. Later that year, Ian announced that the Stone Roses were done.
