That Can't Be the Title Trivia Questions

1. This song by the Smashing Pumpkins sucks! Well, no it doesn't, but the fifth word in the song sucks... literally. What is the song?

From Quiz
Where's My Title! I Want My Title! Part 2

Answer: Bullet With Butterfly Wings

The famous opening line is "The world is a vampire..." I've been listening to this song for many years and it only just now occurred to me, writing this quiz, that the line is probably a clever, appropriate way of saying "The world sucks." Because vampires suck, don't they? They suck people's blood. The title is derived from Ray Bradbury's short story, "The Sound of Thunder." "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" charted at number 22 in the U.S. and it charted in the top 20 in six different countries.

2. This song by Queen on their legendary album "A Night at the Opera" is considered one of the greatest classic rock songs of all-time. What is it?

From Quiz Where's My Title? I Want My Title!

Answer: Bohemian Rhapsody

They are all considered great classic rock songs to some extent, but three of the songs don't fit the category of the quiz. The most well-loved song of them all is the one that fits the category of the quiz, and that is "Bohemian Rhapsody." "Bohemian Rhapsody" was written for Queen's fourth album "A Night at the Opera." At the time they were recording the album, it was considered to be a make-or-break album for the band. They were running out of money at the time. They needed their next album to become a major seller. Lead guitarist Brian May said on VH1's Rock Honors in 2006 that if "Bohemian Rhapsody" didn't become the hit that it became, they likely would have broken up. "Bohemian Rhapsody" peaked at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart. It also became a movie in 2018. Many rock fans consider it to be the greatest rock song ever recorded. The song is famous for its complexity, being one song with multiple parts. It starts off with some vocal harmonies singing a capella... all of these harmonies were recorded by singer Freddie Mercury, he just sang them in different octaves so it'd sound like multiple singers. Then the piano comes in, beginning a sad ballad portion of the song which mentions a murder. When that section is over, the music gets faster going into a quirky opera segment mentioning names like "Scaramouche," "Fandango," and "Galileo." After that, it gets to my favorite part of the song...the rock portion. This has a great riff from May as well as Mercury accusing his lover of spitting in his eye. The song ends quiet. The song's title means "Artist's fantasy," implying that all the lyrics are simply Mercury's fantasy.

3. "Slow down, you move to fast, you got to make the morning last..." starts this catchy 1960s tune that was recorded both by Harper's Bizarre and Simon and Garfunkel. What's the title?

From Quiz And the Title Is...

Answer: 59th Street Bridge Song

Simon and Garfunkel were the first to record this tune in 1966. It was a cut from their album called "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" and is more commonly, but incorrectly known as "Feelin' Groovy". A group called Harper's Bizarre is known for the most popular cover of the song, getting as high as number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1967.

4. Released in 1993, this song was a big hit for the Stone Temple Pilots, though many believe it was by Nirvana. It contained the lyrics: "I'm half the man I used to be This I feel as the dawn It fades to gray..." What "eerie" song was this?

From Quiz That can't be the title, can it? Part 6 (90s ed.)

Answer: Creep

"Creep" was the seventh track off STP's debut album, "Core". It went to number two in the US in 1994. No, it was not done by Nirvana, no matter what you find on the Internet. You can't believe everything you read on the web.

5. What is the song recorded by the Beatles about being head over heels in love with a "sweet and lovely, girl"?

From Quiz That's Not in the Song

Answer: For You Blue

This song was written by George Harrison for his wife at the time.

6. In late 1979, Pink Floyd released their smash album, "The Wall". The only number one single from this LP has a children's chorus repeating the words, "We don't need no education". What song is this?

From Quiz That can't be the title, can it? Part 2

Answer: Another Brick In The Wall

The full title of this song is "Another Brick In The Wall (Part II)". 'We don't need no education We don't need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the classroom Teachers leave them kids alone' It was Pink Floyd's only number one single from "The Wall", reaching number 1 in both the UK and the US. "The Wall" sold approximately 23 million copies in the US alone. The incorrect answers are all songs from the album.

7. A Creedence Clearwater Revival classic from 1969, many might identify it as "Rolling on the River". What is its title, actually?

From Quiz That can't be the title, can it? Part 1

Answer: Proud Mary

"Proud Mary" was written by John Fogerty and recorded by his band, "Creedence Clearwater Revival" on their 1969 album "Bayou Country." It became the band's first top ten hit on the U.S. Pop chart, peaking at number two. "Big wheel keep on turnin', Proud Mary keep on burnin', Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river."

8. This is a Beatles song from the album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." It is over five minutes long and culminates in a large crescendo from a 40-piece orchestra. What is its title?

From Quiz It's called "Teenage Wasteland," right?

Answer: A Day in the Life

The working title of this song was "In the Life Of..." It is one of the most well-known Beatles songs, but the title phrase isn't sung once.

9. "I was thinking about what a friend had said, I was hoping it was a lie."

From Quiz That's Not the Name of That Song! Part 2

Answer: After the Gold Rush

From the 1970 album of the same name, Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush" has undergone some lyric changes over the years. One of the lines in the song originally said "in the 1970s." Over the years, Neil has changed it to "in the 1980s," "in the twentieth century," and "in the twenty-first century."

10. Who sang 'Creeque Alley'?

From Quiz Oldies: Titles But Not Lyrics

Answer: The Mamas and the Papas

'No one's getting fat except Mama Cass'

11. This song by System of a Down was originally titled "Suicide." What's it called?

From Quiz Where's My Title! I Want My Title! Part 2

Answer: Chop Suey!

We know the song was originally called "Suicide" because in the first second of the song, we hear someone saying "We're rolling 'Suicide.'" The band changed the title of the song to make it more radio-friendly. Chop suey is a Chinese food dish but that's not what the song is about. The title comes from the phrase "Self-righteous suicide," which when said out loud sounds like "Self right-chop suey-cide." Guitarist Daron Malakian said that the song was about how everyone deserves to die, in some people's opinions. Hence the line "I cry when angels deserve to die." Loudwire magazine ranked "Chop Suey!" number one on their list of greatest hard rock songs of the 21st Century. It charted in seven different countries, including in the top 20 in Australia, Belgium, and the UK.

12. This 1992 song by the Stone Temple Pilots mentions dogs smelling a girl. What's it called?

From Quiz Where's My Title? I Want My Title!

Answer: Plush

We could do a whole quiz on this category just on Stone Temple Pilots songs. They have many songs where the title isn't in the lyrics. I focused on what I think is their most famous song. The song is based around a guitar riff that is as iconic as it is simple. Anyone can play the riff, but the Stone Temple Pilots made it famous. Singer/songwriter Scott Weiland said that the lyrics were based on a newspaper article he read about a young girl who had been kidnapped, then was found dead. According to Weiland, the lyrics are metaphorical and the song is really about a failed relationship. Thank god the lyrics are metaphorical. What girl would want strange dogs following her around and sniffing her for reasons she doesn't know? "Plush" charted at number one on the U.S. Billboard Album Rock Chart and it charted in the top 30 in Canada and the U.K. After Weiland's death in 2015, the band, with singer Jeff Gutt, altered the way they play this song live. Gutt would point to the sky, implying that the song is for a friend up in heaven, and the rhythm section would do absolutely nothing for three quarters of the song, leaving Gutt and Dean Delo to perform a slow, sad version of the song mostly by themselves.

13. "The 59th Street Bridge Song" fits this quiz but, besides Simon and Garfunkel, who had a popular version the following year?

From Quiz Song Titles Unsung

Answer: Harpers Bizarre

Simon and Garfunkel produced yet another hit in 1966 with "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) from their album "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme". Harpers Bizarre (formerly The Tikis) were determined to turn the song into a single; their version reached number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in April 1967. The band recorded the work of contemporary songwriters, e.g., Randy Newman and Nilsson, and also covered some old standards; their version of Glenn Miller's "Chattanooga Choo Choo" hit number one on Billboard's Easy Listening chart, and their rendition of Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" is heard in the 1970 film "Boys in the Band". They 'disbanded' in 1969.

14. "In the event of something happening to me, there is something I would like you all to see, it's just a photograph of someone that I knew, have you seen my wife Mr. Jones?" A long opening lyric for this 1960s BeeGees hit song. Name it.

From Quiz And the Title Is...

Answer: New York Mining Disaster 1941

This song was the BeeGees first American release in 1967. It was also their first charting hit in the U.K. At the time there was a wild rumor that the group was actually The Beatles recording under a pseudonym. The song is a tale of a miner trapped in a cave waiting for a possible rescue. It was the group's first big hit, scoring a number 14 placing in the U.S. on Billboard's Hot 100 charts, and a number 12 placing in the U.K.

15. What is the song recorded by Black Sabbath dealing with someone saying "our love grows stronger now with every hour"?

From Quiz That's Not in the Song

Answer: N.I.B.

N.I.B. thought for many years to mean "Nativity In Black" was actually named after Bill Ward. His nickname was Nibby (as in the top of a pen) because his beard came to a point. Pen nibs are used in caligraphy.

16. Released by the R&B band "War" in 1975, this song shot to #1 on the Billboard R&B charts. Its catchy lyrics, "Take a little trip, Take a little trip, Take a little trip and see" are nothing like its title. What is the song's correct title?

From Quiz That can't be the title, can it? Part 1

Answer: Low Rider

"Low Rider" is a song by the R&B band "War". It appeared on their 1975 album "Why Can't We Be Friends?" and also reached number 35 on the Pop Singles chart. "All my friends know the Low Rider The Low Rider is a little higher Low Rider drives a little slower Low Rider is a real goer"

17. This is a song by The Who. Most people who aren't major Who fans will think it's called "Teenage Wasteland." But what is its real title?

From Quiz It's called "Teenage Wasteland," right?

Answer: Baba O'Riley

"Baba O'Riley" is from the album "Who's Next." The name Baba came from Meher Baba, a close friend of The Who's guitarist Pete Townshend. The hypnotic synthesizer solo at the beginning was patterned after the style of one Tim Riley. "O" with an apostrophe means "by way of." This means "by way of Tim Riley."

18. "Will some woman in this desert land make me feel like a real man?"

From Quiz That's Not the Name of That Song! Part 2

Answer: Young Lust

From Pink Floyd's ultimate 1979 release, "The Wall." Underlying themes in all of Pink Floyd's music are insanity (mostly alluding to former member Syd Barrett) and loss of father.

19. Who sang 'Lovers Concerto'?

From Quiz Oldies: Titles But Not Lyrics

Answer: Toys

'How gentle is the rain ...'

20. This song by Emerson Lake and Palmer has a line that goes "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends." What's it called?

From Quiz Where's My Title! I Want My Title! Part 2

Answer: Karn Evil 9

This song came more than two decades before Korn's first album, so I don't think they were commenting on that band. "Karn Evil" has music written by keyboardist Keith Emerson, with lyrics co-written by singer Greg Lake and writer Pete Sinfield. "Karn Evil" derives from the word "Carnival," which is probably the "show" mentioned in the song. Even Lake doesn't know where the number 9 came from, but the song's original title was "Gaston 9," so maybe "Gaston" was rejected but "9" was kept. "Karn Evil 9" is about a war between humans and machines. Humans designed machine to remove all the imperfections in the world and put the imperfections in a carnival or a show for everyone to see. However, then the machines decide to get rid of one more imperfect thing: Humans. The machines kill almost all the humans. One human survives thinking he is victorious, but then the computer tells him "I let you live." The moral of the song could be that trying to get rid of all human imperfections is a bad idea because then you'd have to kill all of us. "Karn Evil 9" wasn't a single, but it helped its album, "Brain Salad Surgery," chart at number two in the UK and number 11 in the U.S. and go gold in both countries.

21. The title of this song by the Mountain Goats was the slogan for Greyhound Bus. What is it?

From Quiz Where's My Title? I Want My Title!

Answer: See America Right

"See America Right" was the first single off of their 2002 album "Tallahassee," a concept album about a married couple that hates each other. The song's title is never mentioned in the lyrics, but "Greyhound" is mentioned in the second verse. The Greyhound Bus slogan is "See America Right," hence the song's title. In the song, a man gets arrested and jailed for drunk driving. When he gets out of jail, he board the Greyhound Bus, hoping it will take him somewhere he can meet up with his wife. He says to his wife "I love you, but my love is like a dark cloud full of rain that's always right there up above you." This is one of the loudest, angriest songs the Mountain Goats ever did. It's also one of the songs they most commonly play live. The song is a fan favorite when done live. Most Mountain Goats songs don't have the title in the lyrics. You could do at least ten quizzes in this category with just Mountain Goats songs.

22. Another song fitting the category is "Sunshine Superman" by British singer Donovan; what is Donovan's surname?

From Quiz Song Titles Unsung

Answer: Leitch

Apparently, 1966 was a very good year for writing 'unsung' titles; I guess it was just a cryptic, psychedelic time. Donovan Philips Leitch was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1946; he had his own distinct singing style which blended folk and pop and jazz. His first successful singles came in 1965 in the UK with "Catch the Wind", "Colors" and "Universal Soldier"; "Sunshine Superman" hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and "Mellow Yellow" reached number two (both in 1966). Donovan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. As an aside, one of his daughters is Ione Skye, from the film "Say Anything".

23. What is the song recorded by Led Zeppelin in which they have "dreams of you all through my head"?

From Quiz That's Not in the Song

Answer: Black Dog

This song has nothing to do with the color of an animal. It just so happened that no title for this song could be thought of, so they dedicated it to a stray black dog wandering through the studio.

24. Probably one of the most recognizable of the mis-identified songs, this 1971 hit by "The Who" had the line "Teenage wasteland" repeated many times. Of course, the title is something entirely different. What is it?

From Quiz That can't be the title, can it? Part 1

Answer: Baba O'Riley

"Baba O'Riley" was written by Pete Townshend and released by "The Who" on their 1971 LP, "Who's Next". Townshend derived the song from a demonstration he had heard of a synthesizer and intended to release it as part of his later abandoned "Lifehouse" project, a rock opera which was to follow up the band's 1969 rock opera, "Tommy".

25. "You are the first to have this love of mine."

From Quiz That's Not the Name of That Song! Part 2

Answer: N.I.B.

This song, off Black Sabbath's self-titled debut, tells the story of Lucifer falling in love. My favorite Black Sabbath song!

26. Who sang 'Annie's Song'?

From Quiz Oldies: Titles But Not Lyrics

Answer: John Denver

'You fill up my senses'

27. This song by Iron Maiden has a chorus that simply goes "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH." What is it?

From Quiz Where's My Title! I Want My Title! Part 2

Answer: The Trooper

"The Trooper" is a song about the Crimean War. The single charted at number twelve in the UK and Ireland in 1984. In 2005, a live version of the song was released as a single. That version of the song charted in 11 different countries, including number one in Spain and number five in Canada and Finland.

28. This hit song by Nirvana became what some people think is the best song of the 1990s. It was parodied by Weird Al Yankovic in 1992. What is it?

From Quiz Where's My Title? I Want My Title!

Answer: Smells Like Teen Spirit

All of these songs are considered some of the best songs of the 1990s to some extent, but only one of them fits the category of the quiz. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" went to the top of the charts in Spain, Belgium, France, and New Zealand, and charted in the top ten in at least ten different countries. NME ranked it as the second best song of all-time. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it at the ninth-best song of all-time. The song has gotten and continues to get many accolades just like this, even though Cobain got tired of it and grew to dislike it. The song's title came from his then-girlfriend, who told him that he smells like teen spirit. She was talking about a deodorant brand called Teen Spirit. Cobain did not know that when he wrote it, he thought it was a slogan of rebellion. Cobain said that with the song, he was just trying to rip off the Pixies. Nirvana used dynamics a lot like the Pixies, with songs starting off quiet, and then instantly getting really loud. Fun fact: Kurt Cobain loved Weird Al's parody, which is called "Smells Like Nirvana."

29. Joni Mitchell released this song in 1970: "Don't it always seem to go, You don't know what you've got 'Til it's gone? They paved paradise And put up a parking lot" What is this song's colorful title?

From Quiz That can't be the title, can it? Part 5

Answer: Big Yellow Taxi

"Big Yellow Taxi" is from Joni's "Ladies of the Canyon" album. She claims she was inspired to write this song while vacationing in Hawaii (paradise). She was troubled by the contrast between the gorgeous blue Pacific Ocean and the hotel's parking lot. The wrong choices are all mentioned in the song.
