Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song by Queen on their legendary album "A Night at the Opera" is considered one of the greatest classic rock songs of all-time. What is it?

Answer: Bohemian Rhapsody

They are all considered great classic rock songs to some extent, but three of the songs don't fit the category of the quiz. The most well-loved song of them all is the one that fits the category of the quiz, and that is "Bohemian Rhapsody."

"Bohemian Rhapsody" was written for Queen's fourth album "A Night at the Opera." At the time they were recording the album, it was considered to be a make-or-break album for the band. They were running out of money at the time. They needed their next album to become a major seller. Lead guitarist Brian May said on VH1's Rock Honors in 2006 that if "Bohemian Rhapsody" didn't become the hit that it became, they likely would have broken up.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" peaked at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart. It also became a movie in 2018. Many rock fans consider it to be the greatest rock song ever recorded. The song is famous for its complexity, being one song with multiple parts. It starts off with some vocal harmonies singing a capella... all of these harmonies were recorded by singer Freddie Mercury, he just sang them in different octaves so it'd sound like multiple singers. Then the piano comes in, beginning a sad ballad portion of the song which mentions a murder. When that section is over, the music gets faster going into a quirky opera segment mentioning names like "Scaramouche," "Fandango," and "Galileo." After that, it gets to my favorite part of the song...the rock portion. This has a great riff from May as well as Mercury accusing his lover of spitting in his eye. The song ends quiet.

The song's title means "Artist's fantasy," implying that all the lyrics are simply Mercury's fantasy.
2. This 1992 song by the Stone Temple Pilots mentions dogs smelling a girl. What's it called?

Answer: Plush

We could do a whole quiz on this category just on Stone Temple Pilots songs. They have many songs where the title isn't in the lyrics. I focused on what I think is their most famous song.

The song is based around a guitar riff that is as iconic as it is simple. Anyone can play the riff, but the Stone Temple Pilots made it famous. Singer/songwriter Scott Weiland said that the lyrics were based on a newspaper article he read about a young girl who had been kidnapped, then was found dead. According to Weiland, the lyrics are metaphorical and the song is really about a failed relationship. Thank god the lyrics are metaphorical. What girl would want strange dogs following her around and sniffing her for reasons she doesn't know?

"Plush" charted at number one on the U.S. Billboard Album Rock Chart and it charted in the top 30 in Canada and the U.K.

After Weiland's death in 2015, the band, with singer Jeff Gutt, altered the way they play this song live. Gutt would point to the sky, implying that the song is for a friend up in heaven, and the rhythm section would do absolutely nothing for three quarters of the song, leaving Gutt and Dean Delo to perform a slow, sad version of the song mostly by themselves.
3. The title of this song by the Mountain Goats was the slogan for Greyhound Bus. What is it?

Answer: See America Right

"See America Right" was the first single off of their 2002 album "Tallahassee," a concept album about a married couple that hates each other. The song's title is never mentioned in the lyrics, but "Greyhound" is mentioned in the second verse. The Greyhound Bus slogan is "See America Right," hence the song's title.

In the song, a man gets arrested and jailed for drunk driving. When he gets out of jail, he board the Greyhound Bus, hoping it will take him somewhere he can meet up with his wife. He says to his wife "I love you, but my love is like a dark cloud full of rain that's always right there up above you."

This is one of the loudest, angriest songs the Mountain Goats ever did. It's also one of the songs they most commonly play live. The song is a fan favorite when done live.

Most Mountain Goats songs don't have the title in the lyrics. You could do at least ten quizzes in this category with just Mountain Goats songs.
4. This hit song by Nirvana became what some people think is the best song of the 1990s. It was parodied by Weird Al Yankovic in 1992. What is it?

Answer: Smells Like Teen Spirit

All of these songs are considered some of the best songs of the 1990s to some extent, but only one of them fits the category of the quiz.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" went to the top of the charts in Spain, Belgium, France, and New Zealand, and charted in the top ten in at least ten different countries. NME ranked it as the second best song of all-time. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it at the ninth-best song of all-time. The song has gotten and continues to get many accolades just like this, even though Cobain got tired of it and grew to dislike it.

The song's title came from his then-girlfriend, who told him that he smells like teen spirit. She was talking about a deodorant brand called Teen Spirit. Cobain did not know that when he wrote it, he thought it was a slogan of rebellion.

Cobain said that with the song, he was just trying to rip off the Pixies. Nirvana used dynamics a lot like the Pixies, with songs starting off quiet, and then instantly getting really loud.

Fun fact: Kurt Cobain loved Weird Al's parody, which is called "Smells Like Nirvana."
5. This song by the Who was originally going to be called "Teenage Wasteland," but it ultimately went to a different name. What is it?

Answer: Baba O'Riley

The song's title comes from guitarist Pete Townsend and two of his biggest influences, Meher Baba and Terry Riley.

The song is about teenagers getting high on drugs at Woodstock. The song was meant to point out that this is bad, but some people interpreted the song as if they were celebrating being wasted.

"Baba O-Riley" is one Rolling Stone Magazine's list of 500 Greatest Songs of All-time and on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. The single has sold over a million copies in the UK.
6. This is the title song to Black Sabbath's highest-selling album in the United States. What is it?

Answer: Paranoid

Black Sabbath's second album was certified four times platinum in the United States, making it their highest-selling album in this country. Black Sabbath's three most famous songs in the United States are all on this album: "Iron Man," "War Pigs," and "Paranoid."

The album was originally going to be called "War Pigs," but the record company deemed that title "offensive" so the name was changed to "Paranoid."

"Paranoid" charted in the top ten in ten different countries, including peaking at number one in Denmark and Germany. It only peaked at number 64 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 but it continued to get radio play on U.S. classic rock stations for decades.

The band did not originally expect this song to be a hit. Bassist Geezer Butler said that the song was "a three-minute filler." It's rare for a Black Sabbath song to be less than five minutes long. The shortness of the song is probably what made it more radio-friendly as a single than most Black Sabbath songs.
7. This was the first single from "Led Zeppelin IV." What is it called?

Answer: Black Dog

"Black Dog" charted at number 15 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and it charted in the top ten in Australia, Denmark, New Zealand, and Switzerland. It charted in the top 20 in Canada and the Netherlands and in the top 30 in Germany and Japan. The song has received accolades such as "Riff of the Millennium" according to The Guitar, "Top 50 Classic Rock Songs of All-time" according to Classic Rock Magazine, and "Top 500 Songs of All-time" according to Rolling Stone Magazine. It helped the album sell 23-times platinum in the U.S., making it one of the highest-selling and highest-praised rock albums ever.

The song is a call and response between singer Robert Plant and the rest of the band. He sings a sentence with no music behind him. Then the music plays without him singing anything. Then he sings again (no music). Then the music plays (no singing). And so on and so on just like that for the whole song except for a the occasional "Oh yeah" and "Ah ah ah" from Plant while the rest of the band is rocking out.

The song's title has nothing to do with the song. The album was recorded in a studio that is out in the country, and they would occasionally see a stray black Labrador wondering around. They couldn't think of another name for the song, so they named it after that.
8. This song by the Decemberists, the first song on their second full-length album, is about a pirate ship. What is it called?

Answer: Shanty For The Arethusa

The Decemberists' second album "Her Majesty The Decemberists" came out in 2003. This album has a song that's rarely talked about or played live, but I think it's one of the best songs they, or anyone else, ever wrote. That song is the first song on the album, "Shanty For the Arethusa."

In the song, a bunch of men go on a sea expedition hoping to get "spice, rum and tea leaves." Along the way, the men commit some crimes. The nature of the crimes is hinted at in lines such as "Tell your daughters 'Do not walk the streets alone tonight'" and "Say 'good night,' boys, good night." The latter line seems to hint at murder. In the final verse, they are sent to Australia, which used to be a penal colony, a place where people were sent as punishment for crimes. Their fate is hinted at in the line: "The ghosts of sailors passed, their spectral bodies clinging to the shrouds." This means that past pirates were executed there, and they probably will be too.

Musically, most of the song is just singer Colin Meloy and his acoustic guitar. As the verses progress, you get a little bit of electric guitar from Chris Funk. Then, in the chorus, all of the sudden the drums and the accordion kick in, and, well it just blows my mind the way only the Decemberists can.
9. This song by the Devil Makes Three is the closing song on their album "Do Wrong Right." It is sung by banjo player Cooper McBean. What is it called?

Answer: Car Wreck

"Car Wreck" tells the story of a man who's bored of his hometown and decides to move out. So he buys a truck and gets a friend (possibly McBean?) to help him move. When he gets into a new town, he meets a woman who has a home and allows him to stay at her home. They fall in love with each other. Apparently to the man, this seems too good to be true. So he sneaks out of the kitchen. She catches him sneaking out, but it's too late. He leaves and never comes back, leaving the woman to cry. He goes somewhere else and lives for another 18 years, but he can never forget about her no matter how much he drinks. He gets miserable thinking about her all the time, so he commits suicide in the way that the song's title suggests. The song's title is never mentioned, but it's clear that that the title sums up how the story ends. At the end of the final verse, Cooper sings "I promised him a song," possibly implying that the song is a true story that happened to one of his friends.

I am a huge fan of the Devil Makes Three and this is my favorite song of theirs. It should be regarded as one of the greatest songs of all-time, but some bands don't get the recognition they deserve.
10. This big 1997 hit from Blur made people scream "Woo hoo!" when it came out. What is it called?

Answer: Song 2

This is the song that goes "Woo hoo!" It is difficult to understand any words in the song beyond that because it is difficult to understand the singer's voice.

The song is the second song on Blur's self-titled album and on the greatest hits album. It has two verses, two choruses and it's two minutes and two seconds long. It also peaked at number two on the UK singles chart.
