Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is a Beatles song from the album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." It is over five minutes long and culminates in a large crescendo from a 40-piece orchestra. What is its title?

Answer: A Day in the Life

The working title of this song was "In the Life Of..." It is one of the most well-known Beatles songs, but the title phrase isn't sung once.
2. This is a song by The Who. Most people who aren't major Who fans will think it's called "Teenage Wasteland." But what is its real title?

Answer: Baba O'Riley

"Baba O'Riley" is from the album "Who's Next." The name Baba came from Meher Baba, a close friend of The Who's guitarist Pete Townshend. The hypnotic synthesizer solo at the beginning was patterned after the style of one Tim Riley. "O" with an apostrophe means "by way of." This means "by way of Tim Riley."
3. Next is a song by The Monkees. The chorus thunders "Why don't you cut your hair? Why don't you live up there? Why don't you do what I do, see what I feel when I care?" Do you know the title?

Answer: Randy Scouse Git

The single "Randy Scouse Git" was considered controversial in England, so it was quickly pulled back, and subsequently released with a different title, "Alternate Title."
4. This is another Monkees song. It is the theme song from their movie "Head." It sounds similar to The Beatles' "I am the Walrus." The song begins, "My, my. The clock in the sky is pounding away. There's so much to say..." What's it called?

Answer: Porpoise Song

The Monkees' first movie "Head" was a failure. It resembled The Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour," in that it was an experimental psychedelic film that didn't do well at all. "Porpoise Song" was its centerpiece.
5. Robert Plant screams "Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove..." and Led Zeppelin launches into which song?

Answer: Black Dog

"Black Dog," from the classic untitled Led Zeppelin album is interesting in a way: There is no chorus or phrase that is repeated at all. Just many verses.
6. Voted the worst Beatles song of all time, the only thing you could call lyrics in this is a monotone voice repeating "Number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine..." What name was this track given?

Answer: Revolution 9

"Revolution 9" is the longest Beatles track, at 8:12. It is on their album "The Beatles," better known as "The White Album." It is not a song at all, but a collage of abstract noises, talking and sounds that is really strange. It was compiled by Beatle John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono. The other three Beatles had almost nothing to do with it, except as voice snippets.
7. John Lennon half sings, half speaks "Turn off your mind. Relax and float down stream..." in the final song on the Beatles' album "Revolver." If you didn't have a song list, you wouldn't know that this song's title is...?

Answer: Tomorrow Never Knows

John Lennon said he titled this song "Tomorrow Never Knows" to take the edge off the heavy philosophical lyrics. The titles "Mark 1" and "The Void" were both working titles the song went through before Lennon came to the final name. "I Want You" is a song from the Beatles album "Abbey Road."
8. Led Zeppelin mentions Ring Wraiths, a type of character from J. R. R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" novels in which song? Robert Plant sings: "The drums will shake the castle wall. The Ring Wraiths ride in black. Ride on..." What's the title of that one, again?

Answer: The Battle of Evermore

Led Zeppelin seemed to have a fascination with "The Lord of the Rings" and ancient medieval symbols and concepts, as is evident on their fourth album which has no title, but is adorned with four medieval runes. Some people say the symbols are supposed to be the title. "The Battle of Evermore" tells the story of a "Lord of the Rings"-type war.
9. More medieval Led Zeppelin stuff. This song is about a group of Vikings whose "only goal will be the western shore." What did they title it?

Answer: Immigrant Song

"Immigrant Song" is sung from the perspective of a Viking (I think): "We come from the lands of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow." The lyrics are very interesting, if you can decipher them.
10. And last but not least: This was written by George Harrison. All the instruments were played entirely by Indian musicians. The Beatles sang the vocals. Harrison sings: "Without going out of my door, I can know the ways of heaven..." Can you know the title of this song?

Answer: The Inner Light

"The Inner Light" was released as the b-side of The Beatles' "Lady Madonna" in March 1968. It didn't do very well on the charts. Listen to it and you'll see why.
