The founder of Confucianism, Confucius (551 BCE-479 BCE), was also a teacher and political figure. His way of thinking later became the official imperial philosophy of China. He was very influential in several government dynasties. Confucius based many of his beliefs on the concept of self-discipline.

"The Art of War" contains 13 chapters about different aspects of warfare. Sun Tzu (544 BC-496 BC) described war as a "necessary evil that must be avoided whenever possible". The book has been extremely influential with military and political leaders all over the world. The name Sun Tzu literally means "Master Sun".

Answer: Kublai Khan

Kublai Khan (1215-1294) was one of the most influential Emperors of China. As ruler of the Mongol Empire, he helped establish new trade routes between Asia and Europe. He had power in both China and Mongolia. His garden in Xanadu was inspiration for Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Kubla Khan" poem.

Answer: Mao Zedong

Formerly transcribed as Mao Tse-Tung, Mao Zedong (1893-1976) was the leader of the Chinese Communist Party from 1935 and until his death. After creating the People's Republic of China, he served as its Chairman from 1949 to 1976. Not everything is pretty though, as his rule took the lives of millions of people, who were either executed or died during the Great Leap Forward, which caused widespread famine and starvation.

Despite this, he is widely revered in the People's Republic of China.

Answer: Ding Ling

An acclaimed writer in the literary world, Ding Ling (1904-1986) was one of the most popular authors of the 20th century. The Soviet Union awarded her the Stalin second prize for Literature in 1951. Although she was a supporter of the Communist cause, she was jailed for political reasons, as Mao Zedong disliked her and her way of thinking.

Jiang Zemin (born 1926) was the President of China from 1993 to 2003. During his term, he managed to get Hong Kong back from the United Kingdom, as well as Macau from Portugal. He also served as the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party from 1989 to 2002.

Lhamo Thondup (born 1935) became the 14th Dalai Lama on November 1950. He has devoted his life to humanitarian causes, and was awarded the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize. He has also worked to remove Tibet from China rule: this has led to conflict between many Tibetans and the Chinese government.

Jackie Chan (born 1954) is often considered as the successor of Bruce Lee. He studied martial arts, acting and singing from a very young age. He participated in several movies with little success before his 1998 film "Rush Hour", a comedy that won him numerous awards and nominations. Chan has won more than 20 Hong Kong Film Awards.

Chow Yun-fat (born 1955) appeared in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" as Sao Feng, a Chinese ship captain. He has been nominated for many Hong Kong Film Awards.

Yao Ming (born 1980) was the first overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft. From 1997 to 2002, he played with the Shanghai Sharks of China, before being signed by the Houston Rockets. He was forced to retire in 2011 because of many ankle and foot injuries.
