Electronics and Circuits Trivia Questions

1. LED stands for "Light Emitting Diode". The first two words are clear, but what is the origin and meaning of the word "diode"?

From Quiz
Let There Be Lights

Answer: A device with exactly two connectors (di = two)

Originally, -ode names were used to identify various types of vacuum tubes. A diode had two terminals, anode and cathode. A triode had three (adding a gate). There were also tetrodes (4 terminals) and pentodes (5) of various designs. The function of a diode tube was to rectify an alternating current, because, by design, it can pass current only in one direction. Today, diodes still have this primary function, so the name is used for the semiconductor element as well. The other names have mostly fallen into disuse - the semiconductor equivalent of a triode is a transistor.

2. A resistor's first three colour bands are brown, black, and red. What is its value?

From Quiz Resistor Colour Code

Answer: 1000 ohms

The colour bands are read from left to right. The first band denotes the first digit, the second band denotes the second digit, and the third band denotes the subsequent number of zeros.

3. What is solder made of?

From Quiz Soldering Basics

Answer: Tin and lead or tin and copper

Solder for electronics is a mixture of tin and lead with more of the former. However, it has been found that even a small amount of lead can be detrimental to health so now copper is used with a higher proportion of tin. Some companies still use lead solder but are gradually changing over to copper/tin because of country lead import restrictions and the known health risks of working with lead.

4. Larger buildings may be supplied with a medium voltage electricity supply, and will require a substation or mini-sub. What is the main item of equipment contained in these?

From Quiz Building Electricity

Answer: Transformer

The transformer is used to transform a medium voltage supply to a low voltage supply, e.g. from 11 000 V to 400 V. A transformer is rated in kVA, kilo-Volt-Amps, which is a measurement of electrical power.

5. As cell phone technology evolved, a group was convened whose acronym became very popular when speaking of cell phone technology. What was the name of this group?

From Quiz Cellular Phone Technology

Answer: Groupe Special Mobile

This group was brought together to standardize the various technologies which were cropping up and was originally convened in Europe. In 1987, the GSM group chose the TDMA technology standard for digital cellular communication and all European Union countries eventually accepted the standard.

6. This characteristic was formerly measured in cycles-per-second, but its modern unit of measure is named after a German physicist.

From Quiz Electronics and the Letter "F"

Answer: Frequency

In 1960, the term "hertz", abbreviated Hz, was adopted officially for use, replacing "cycles per second". It is named after German physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (1857-1894). Quite often, kilohertz (1000 Hz), megahertz (1000 kHz) and gigahertz (1000 MHz) are used to describe a frequency.

7. What does AC and DC stand for in the electrical field?

From Quiz Acronyms used in the Electrical Field

Answer: Alternating Current and Direct Current

Electricity is voltage and current. Voltage is electrical pressure, and current is the flow of charged particles. The difference between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) is that the electrons in an AC circuit regularly reverse their direction. In a DC circuit electrons always flow in the same direction.

8. Why don't I see any AC batteries around here?

From Quiz A Day in the Life of Retail Electronics

Answer: Batteries are only DC.

If you picked "They're hiding" don't get too upset. I have frequently *wanted* to answer in that fashion!

9. What frequency range is the High Frequency band?

From Quiz Basic Radio Stuff

Answer: 3 to 30 MHz

The HF band is based on frequencies 3 to 30 Mhz. AM radio stations are in the HF band but normally are stated in kilohertz.

10. Compact discs, (according to the original CD specifications) hold how many minutes of music?

From Quiz The Sound of 1s and 0s

Answer: 74 mins

According to many stories surrounding the origin of the compact disc, 74 minutes was settled on because it would comfortably contain all of Beethoven's 9th symphony on one disc. Although some stories reference a specific Sony higher-up who claimed this as his favorite piece of music, stories differ. All that's known for sure is that Sony insisted on this and won out over Phillips' original 60 minute proposal.

11. What are the 2 terminals of a diode called?

From Quiz Basic Electronics

Answer: Anode and Cathode

12. Made from a variety of materials, such as carbon, this inhibits the flow of current.

From Quiz Electronic Components

Answer: resistor

The device is so named because it resists (or inhibits) the flow of current.

13. What equipment is used to measure current that is going through a circuit?

From Quiz Engineering Test Equipment

Answer: Multimeter

A multimeter can serve as an ammeter (current) or a voltmeter (voltage), among other functions. It is a very useful tool for the engineer to identify how much current is going through a component on a circuit board. A multimeter is very handy to check for shorts between battery and ground and to verify that a component is making contact with the trace on the circuit board.

14. Electrical current is measured in what units?

From Quiz So you Want to be an Electrician?

Answer: amperes

The ampere is usually referred to as an 'amp' and is named for the French scientist Andre-Marie Ampere.

15. Which digit does the colour yellow denote on a resistor colour band?

From Quiz Resistor Colour Code

Answer: 4

The digits are denoted by the different colours. Black = 0, brown = 1, red = 2, orange = 3, yellow = 4, green = 5, blue = 6, violet = 7, grey = 8, white = 9.

16. How hot should a soldering iron be in order to solder leaded solder?

From Quiz Soldering Basics

Answer: 650-800 degrees Fahrenheit

Although solder will melt at 450 degrees, it will not create a clean strong joint at such a low temperature. Therefore soldering components on circuit boards is usually advisable at 700 degrees for surface mount parts, and 750 for parts that go through the board when working with leaded solder. When working with unleaded solder it is recommended to solder at 750 for surface mount parts and 800 degrees for through-hole parts for the most effective solder.

17. Older phones, such as TDMA phones, did not come with a removable card which kept a subscriber's information (billing, number, etc.). However, newer phones, especially GSM phones, contained the small removable card which is called what?

From Quiz Cellular Phone Technology

Answer: SIM

SIM stands for subscriber identity module. It keeps the information such as your phone number, your billing information and your address book. This makes it much easier to switch from phone to phone. Europeans used the system for years before Americans got this technology. (My exchange student came over here with a phone and her father told her to just take out the SIM card so she could purchase another card to use the phone here in the US. We looked all over and went to a couple cell phone stores before figuring out that we just didn't have that type of technology at the time - and that was in 2000!)

18. The unit of measure for a capacitor is the...?"

From Quiz Electronics and the Letter "F"

Answer: Farad

The unit is named after Michael Faraday (1791-1867), a British scientist famous for his work in electromagnetism. A farad is a rather large value for ordinary use and quite often capacitors are much smaller and measured in micro- (one millionth) or pico- (one millionth of one millionth) farads.

19. Sometimes computers and cash registers in a foodmart are connected to a UPS system. What does UPS mean?

From Quiz Acronyms used in the Electrical Field

An uninterruptable power supply (UPS) is a backup power supply, such as a battery, that provides emergency power in the event that power is lost from the main supply.

20. Where are the tapes that convert 8mm tapes to VHS?

From Quiz A Day in the Life of Retail Electronics

Answer: They don't exist.

8mm and VHS are two different speeds. Period. People frequently say things like, "Wal Mart sells them, but they're out." I say, "Fine. When they're back in, buy one and show it to me." I've been in this business for 9 years, and no one has ever taken me up on that challenge.

21. The sampling rate, (how many samples per second are stored) for a CD is:

From Quiz The Sound of 1s and 0s

Answer: 44.1 kHz

CDs reproduce 44,100 samples per second, which has a maximum frequency reproduction of 22,050 Hz, or just a hair past the upper limit of human hearing. In this way CDs can theoretically reproduce any frequency in the human hearing range.

22. How many diodes are in a single-phase full wave bridge rectifier?

From Quiz Basic Electronics

How much charge a capacitor can store is its capacitance, measured in farads.

24. The underlying physical process that triggers the light emission is called recombination, but which two things do recombine in this process, releasing energy in the form of light?

From Quiz Let There Be Lights

Answer: Electrons and holes

Semiconducting materials derive their electrical properties from free electrons (those not tightly bound to atoms) and holes (locations in the atomic lattice that are missing an electron). The more electrons and holes exist at any one time, the larger a current can flow, but this will not release any significant energy by itself. Only when an electron fills a hole will energy be released in the form of a photon - a light particle - as that electron is then more tightly bound. Of course to keep this process going, new free electrons and holes need to be created; that is achieved by the electric energy flowing into the LED.

25. What is a thermocouple used for?

From Quiz Engineering Test Equipment

Answer: To measure the temperature of a component.

Thermocouples are about the size of a lifesaver. Engineers use a very heat resistant epoxy to attach a thermocouple to a circuit board. At this point, they can measure how much the components heat up when they are under test in their enclosures. The failure temperature of the component can then be measured and recorded by a computer that is attached to the other end of the thermocouple wire.

26. In the US, an outdoor receptacle must have what style of cover?
