Resistor Colour Code Trivia Quiz

A quiz about the resistor colour code, which should be simple enough for electricians, but not so easy for those without experience in this field. I hope you enjoy playing this, my first quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A resistor's first three colour bands are brown, black, and red. What is its value?

Answer: 1000 ohms

The colour bands are read from left to right. The first band denotes the first digit, the second band denotes the second digit, and the third band denotes the subsequent number of zeros.
2. Which digit does the colour yellow denote on a resistor colour band?

Answer: 4

The digits are denoted by the different colours. Black = 0, brown = 1, red = 2, orange = 3, yellow = 4, green = 5, blue = 6, violet = 7, grey = 8, white = 9.
3. A 47 Kohm resistor would have which colours on its first three bands?

Answer: yellow, violet, orange

This is a very commonly used resistor.
4. Which digit does the colour orange denote on a resistor colour band?

Answer: 3

Resistors are commonly made from carbon.
5. A resistor's first three colour bands are red, yellow and black. What is its value?

Answer: 24 ohms

Resistors have 'preferred values'. It is possible to make a 24 ohm resistor, but it is not a preferred value.
6. Which digit is represented by a blue band on a resistor?

Answer: 6

8 = grey, 9 = white, 4 = yellow.
7. Which digit is represented by a black band on a resistor?

Answer: 0

If the third band is black, then the value has no (0) subsequent zeros after the first two digits.
8. A resistor's first three colour bands are brown, green and red. What is its value?

Answer: 1500 ohms

First digit = 1 (brown), second digit = 5 (green) followed by two zeros (red).
9. Which colour represents the digit 6 in the resistor colour code?

Answer: blue

Pink is not a colour used to denote the ohmic value on a resistor.
10. Which of these colours is NOT used in the resistor value colour code?

Answer: turquoise

There are other colour bands seen on resistors. This quiz deals only with the VALUE colour bands, which are the first three bands read from left to right.
