Ian Botham Trivia Questions

Somerset was the county where Sir Viv and Beefy met as teens. They became life long friends.

Oh yes, "The Beefy one". He had dramas with his weight throughout his career, mostly due to an on-going back injury.

3. Which player did Botham dismiss as his first wicket in Test cricket?

From Quiz Memorable Moments - Ian Botham

Answer: Greg Chappell

Ian Botham played his first Test against Australia in 1977. He took 5-74 in the first innings, capturing the wickets of Greg Chappell, Doug Walters, Rodney Marsh, Max Walker and Jeff Thompson. He scored 25 runs in the first innings for England. His bowling was thought to be a fluke by some, but he was to prove them wrong over the years.

4. What is Mr. Botham's full name?

From Quiz I. T. Botham

Answer: Ian Terence Botham

He was born on 24th November 1955 in Oldfield, Heswall, Cheshire, England.

5. Master Ian took his world record 356th wicket against New Zealand. Who was the batsman?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 2

Answer: Jeff Crowe.

Yes. A Kiwi. A bit disappointing for a statistic like this, but even us New Zealanders must bow to greatness.

6. What is Ian's wife's name? It is not Susan.

Answer: Kathy

Kathy and Ian met young and married on 31st January 1976.

7. Which team did Botham not play for?

8. 'Lord' Botham had his test debut in 1977 at Trentbridge. Who was the opposition?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 2

Answer: Australia.

It took his second spell to take his first test wicket.

9. Who was Botham's first test wicket?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 1

Answer: Greg Chappell

Including Jeff Thomson, all of the above were taken by Beefy. A "5 Bagger" in his first test! Greg Chappell (one of the world's all time great batsmen) was the first of his career. It was in his second spell that Beefy found "line and length".

10. What were Ian Botham's best bowling figures against the West Indies?

From Quiz Memorable Moments - Ian Botham

Answer: 8-103

In the second Test against the West Indies at Lord's in 1984, Botham was joint Man of the Match with Gordon Greenidge. Greenidge had scored 214* and led the West Indies to victory by 9 wickets. On his way, he passed the total of 4,000 test runs. Botham took 8-103 in the West Indian first innings, becoming the first man to take 8 wickets against the West Indies. He scored 81 in the second innings, passing 4,000 Test runs himself. All in all, a memorable match for the England all-rounder.

11. In which year and against which team, did Botham make his test debut?

From Quiz I. T. Botham

Answer: 1977, Australia

In this game he took 5-47 in Australia's first innings. England won the match by 7 wickets.

12. 'Viceroy' Botham received two "Beamers" from which frustrated Australian bowler during his 149 not out at Headingly in 1981?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 2

Answer: Geoff Lawson.

You can understand one "Beamer" but not two. A "Beamer" leaves the bowler's hand and continues straight at the batsman's head. At 130kph, that's very dangerous. A "fast" bowler like Lawson, who was in the 140kph plus, must be life threating. Beefy remembered!

13. Another great performance came in the Golden Jubilee Test against India in 1980. What was Botham the first player to do in this match?

From Quiz Memorable Moments - Ian Botham

Answer: Score a century and take 10 wickets in a Test

In the first innings Botham took 6-58, while the Indians were dismissed for 242. When England batted they looked to be in trouble at 58-5. Botham proceeded to score 114, hitting 17 fours and spending 206 minutes at the crease. In the end the England total was 296 all out. In the second innings Botham took 7-48 and left England needing to score only 96 to win. They seized victory by 10 wickets.

14. What is his main charity?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 1

Answer: Leukaemia research

Bothams first injury as an international was a strange one. Attempting to field a ball on the boundary, he stepped on it and broke a bone in his left foot. Whilst in hospital he went through the children's ward. Four kids were playing a board game. He asked and was told all suffered from leukaemia. Two of the kids had not long to live. He was then told there was lack of funds for the annual party that for some was their last. He has since raised 10's of millions of dollars for Leukaemia research.

15. 'Prime Minister' Beefy scored how many half-centuries in one day internationals?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 2

Answer: 9.

Just think how many more "big" innings he would have by his name if his debut was at the beginning of this millennium, given the amount of games played now compared to the eighties, and the amount of games now played against the "minnows"? Cricket fans may smile at the idea. 21 fifties would be easy, don't you think?

16. Headingley 1981. Who was England captain?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 1

Answer: Mike Brearley

Beefy was replaced by Brearley for the third Ashes test in 1981. The rest is amazing cricket folklore. "Brears" challenged Beefy if he still wanted to play. With many swear words, he said 'Yes'.

17. England also won the fourth Ashes Test of 1981 thanks to Botham's heroics. What were his bowling figures in the second Australian innings?

From Quiz Memorable Moments - Ian Botham

Answer: 5-11

In the second innings, the Australians needed to score 151 to win. They never managed to get started, however, losing wickets regularly. Botham put an end to their hopes, though, when he took 5 wickets for one run in the space of 28 deliveries. He finished with figures of 5-11 from 14 overs.

18. Botham scored 114 and took 13-106 in a test match, the first time anyone had scored a century and taken 10 wickets. Against which team did he do this?

From Quiz I. T. Botham

Answer: India

This was Mumbai in 1980, in the Golden Jubilee Test. England won the match by 10 wickets.

19. 'Supreme Court Judge' Botham judged this wicketkeeper a "a cheating little man". Not exactly what he said;) What did Salim Yousuf do that was so bad to bring out this on-field stinging attack whilst the Beefy one was batting?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 2

Answer: Claimed a catch that contacted the ground first?

Botham was right. Yousuf claimed it when it had clearly been seen by the umpire to pitch in front of his gloves. Same thing happened in Aussie when Greg Dyer the wicketkeeper tried the same thing. The umpire (before third umpire replays) had no choice but to give it out. The Aussies play damn hard but are not cheats. "You're a Liar Dyer" was slapped over Aussie newspapers the next day. He lost his place in the side soon after.

20. Headingley 1981. What was Botham's 2nd innings score at bat?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 1

Answer: 149 not out

149 not out! Dropped as England captain, out of form, lucky to get into this side (according to selectors), and then to come out and set up a chance for an England win is heroic to say the least.

21. Against which team did Botham make his highest score of 208?

From Quiz Memorable Moments - Ian Botham

Answer: India

In the third Test of 1982, Botham scored 208 from 226 deliveries, hitting 19 fours and 4 sixes in his innings. The England total in the first innings was 594. The match was finally drawn, and Ian Botham was the Man of the Match.

22. How many tests did it take Botham to reach the milestone of 1000 runs and 100 wickets?

From Quiz I. T. Botham

Answer: 21

He took his 100 wickets in 2 years and 9 days, which was a record, as was doing both in 21 matches. He went on to take 200 wickets and score 2000 runs in record time, by both age and number of tests.

23. 'President' Botham had test figures of 102 tests, 5200 runs, Highscore 208, 383 wickets, average of 28.40. What was his best bowling?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 2

Answer: 8 for 34

Bowling against Pakistan, Lords, 1978. Which completed a win to England by an innings and 120 runs.

24. Headingly 1981. Australia needed 130 to win. Easy. Which England strike bowler destroyed the Aussie line up?

From Quiz Ian Botham: Pt. 1

Answer: Bob Willis

25. In first class cricket in 1985, Botham scored 1530 runs for his county, including an impressive number of sixes. How many sixes did he score?

From Quiz I. T. Botham

29. Botham received an award in 1992 for his services to cricket and to charity. What award did he receive?
