Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Ian's nickname?

Answer: Beefy

Oh yes, "The Beefy one". He had dramas with his weight throughout his career, mostly due to an on-going back injury.
2. What is Ian's wife's name? It is not Susan.

Answer: Kathy

Kathy and Ian met young and married on 31st January 1976.
3. Who was Botham's first test wicket?

Answer: Greg Chappell

Including Jeff Thomson, all of the above were taken by Beefy. A "5 Bagger" in his first test!
Greg Chappell (one of the world's all time great batsmen) was the first of his career. It was in his second spell that Beefy found "line and length".
4. He is now "Sir Ian Botham"?

Answer: true

In my humble opinion, about time! His dedication to his charity should have been enough. Arise, Sir Beefy!
5. What is his main charity?

Answer: Leukaemia research

Bothams first injury as an international was a strange one. Attempting to field a ball on the boundary, he stepped on it and broke a bone in his left foot.
Whilst in hospital he went through the children's ward. Four kids were playing a board game. He asked and was told all suffered from leukaemia. Two of the kids had not long to live. He was then told there was lack of funds for the annual party that for some was their last.
He has since raised 10's of millions of dollars for Leukaemia research.
6. Headingley 1981. Who was England captain?

Answer: Mike Brearley

Beefy was replaced by Brearley for the third Ashes test in 1981. The rest is amazing cricket folklore. "Brears" challenged Beefy if he still wanted to play. With many swear words, he said 'Yes'.
7. Headingley 1981. What was Botham's 2nd innings score at bat?

Answer: 149 not out

149 not out! Dropped as England captain, out of form, lucky to get into this side (according to selectors), and then to come out and set up a chance for an England win is heroic to say the least.
8. Headingly 1981. Australia needed 130 to win. Easy. Which England strike bowler destroyed the Aussie line up?

Answer: Bob Willis

Sir Beefy described it as "One of the most devastating bowling spells I have ever seen".
9. Mr Botham played football, soccer. Who for?

Answer: Scunthorpe United

He loved his soccer and could also hit a golf ball well.
10. Ian Botham was best mates with Viv Richards before they became "superstars".

Answer: true

Became great friends at Somerset, Ian's home county and who Viv signed to play for in 1974.
