On June 8, the Red Sox locked horns with the St. Louis Browns. It didn't long for the Browns to fall down, as it was 8-0 Red Sox by the end of the second inning. The game ended in a 29-4 pummeling. Boston hit nine doubles, including Al Zarilla's four. Boston also had a triple and seven home runs, including Bobby Doerr's three.

2. Forrest Burgess was a big league catcher for four different teams during the 1950s. What was Burgess' nickname?

Forrest "Smoky" Burgess was a left-handed batter who played for the Cubs, Phillies, Reds, and Pirates during the 1950s. Smoky inherited his nickname from his father, "Old Smoky" Burgess. Smoky was a slow-footed but hard-hitting backstop who once hit three homers in a single game for the Reds in 1955. In the 1960s, Burgess became a valuable pinch hitter; he ended his big league career in 1967 with an amazing total of 507 pinch hit at-bats.

Veeck displayed a telegram to the umpires, signed by Frick, and the at-bat took place. This August 19 game found Bob Cain of the Tigers on the mound to face little Eddie, and he walked him on four pitches. The Tigers won the game 6-2. Rule changes in baseball prevent this from happening again.

11. Wes Westrum was a big league catcher for the New York Giants from 1947 to 1957. During the 1965 season, Westrum replaced which man as the manager of the New York Mets?

The righty-hitting catcher hit 96 home runs during his career, including 23 round trippers in 1950. In 1965, Westrum took over the New York Mets from legendary baseball manager Casey Stengel. Westrum managed the hapless Mets from 1965 to 1967, compiling a record of 142-237.

12. James Barton Vernon played first base for the Washington Senators and three other clubs during the 1950s. What was Vernon's nickname?

In 1953, for example, Vernon won the AL batting crown with a .337 average to go along with 15 home runs and 115 RBI. Unfortunately, Vernon played most of his career with second-rate clubs such as the Senators and Red Sox. Vernon retired with 172 total big league home runs.

Musial didn't appreciate comments that Baumholtz had made through the season, so Stan went to manager Eddie Stanky and told him that he wanted to pitch against the Cubs and Baumholtz. So, on September 28 in the final game of the season, Musial made his pitching debut. Harvey Haddix started the game and pitched to one batter, then Musial pitched against Baumholtz. Baumholtz got to first base on a ground ball error by Cardinal third baseman Solly Hemus. Haddix then took over again after Musial pitched to Baumholtz. Wynn retired with 2334 strikeouts after 23 seasons. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972.
