2012 London Trivia Questions

1. The Copper Box was one of the permanent venues built within the main Olympic Park. Which sport was it the main host venue for during the Olympics?

From Quiz
What Went On Where?

Answer: Handball

The Copper Box was planned as one of the four permanent venues to be built within the Olympic Park site at Stratford, alongside the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre and Velodrome. Intended as a multi-sport venue, the 7,000 seat arena was utilised primarily for the handball competitions, with the group phase of the men's competition, and the group phase and quarter-finals of the women's competition held there, before the final stages were held at the larger Basketball Arena. Upon the completion of the handball competitions, the venue was then used to host the fencing element of the Modern Pentathlon competitions, while at the Paralympics it was used for the goalball competitions.

2. Which defending World All Around champion failed to qualify to the All-Around finals at the 2012 Olympic Games?

From Quiz WAG at the 2012 Olympic Games

Answer: Jordyn Wieber

Jordyn Wieber (USA) actually qualified 4th out of 24 top qualifiers. However, in artistic gymnastics there's a two per country rule, which states that only two gymnasts from each country can advance to a final. Therefore, if two of your teammates qualify ahead of you then you cannot qualify to the same final no matter how high your score is. Both of Jordyn's teammates, Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman qualified ahead of her and so Jordyn was left out of the finals.

3. The majority of the pins were released by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. By what more manageable acronym are they better known?

From Quiz London 2012 - The Pin Badge Perspective

Answer: LOCOG

The committee was founded in October 2005, just 3 months after London won the games in a close-run contest with Paris. The committee was chaired by Lord Sebastian Coe, the man in charge of the British Olympic bid. Other notable members were Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and the Vice Chairman Sir Keith Mills. LOCOG were not responsible for the construction of the new venues; this fell to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), who were fully publicly funded. LOCOG made a profit of around £30 million over the course of the games.

4. Athletics: Usain Bolt of Jamaica won the gold medal in both the 100m and 200m sprint for men. Who won the silver in both events?

From Quiz London Olympics 2012

Answer: Yohan Blake (Jamaica)

Blake, Bolt's compatriot won the silver just tailing Bolt. Bolt set an Olympic record in the 100m sprint by clocking 9.63 seconds. Warren Weir won the bronze in the 200m sprint whilst Gatlin won the bronze in the 100 m sprint. Usain Bolt became the first athlete to retain both the 100m and 200m sprint titles at an Olympics.

5. The drama of the gymnastics at the 2012 games kicked off early, with the failure of the American women's favourite to qualify for the all around final. What was this gymnast's name?

From Quiz London 2012 - Artistic Gymnastics

Answer: Jordyn Wieber

Jordyn Wieber was arguably the favourite of the American squad, and possibly the world, to go on to win the women's all around title at these Olympic games. However, despite finishing fourth overall in the qualifiers, Jordyn failed to progress to the final due to the rule that only two gymnasts from each nation are allowed to qualify (with Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman finishing in positions 2 and 3 respectively). This rule came under much criticism afterwards, with some arguing that it should be the top gymnasts who qualify, irrespective of which nation they represent.

6. How many countries made their debut appearance in the London 2012 Games?

From Quiz London 2012: An Eventful Two Weeks

Answer: 0

No countries made their debut appearance in the London 2012 Olympics, making it the first time there were no debutantes in the Summer Games. All 204 NOCs sent their representatives to London, while three athletes from the former Netherlands Antilles (who do not have a NOC anymore) and one from South Sudan (who did not organize a NOC in time for the Games) competed as independent participants.

7. The Chinese pair Zhang Yanquan and Cao Yuan won gold at the 2012 Olympics men's 10 metres synchronised diving, and bravely so, as one was recovering from an injury to his leg. What was that injury?

From Quiz The Checkered Flag

Answer: Fractured tibia

Cao Yuan was still limping quite badly as he moved around the pool area during his dives, but this didn't deter the compact champion who only weighed 42 kgm. The champion pair received a total of 486.78 for their six dives and came out almost twenty points ahead of the Mexican divers, who took the silver medal, and the USA divers who scored the bronze.

8. What event did gymnast Gabby Douglas win an individual gold medal in?

From Quiz London 2012

Answer: individual all-around

Gabby Douglas became the first African American to win an Olympic gymnastics all around event. In addition, her team (comprising of herself, Jordyn Wieber, Kyla Ross, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney) won the gold for the women's team all-around during the 2012 Olympic Games.

9. At age sixteen, Gabby Douglas became the first US gymnast to win both the individual all-around gold medal and the team gold in the same Olympic competition. Her achievements earned her what nickname?

From Quiz Team Eggheads at the Olympics

Answer: The Flying Squirrel

Douglas was given the nickname by the US gymnastics team coordinator Martha Karolyi, wife of famed gymnastic coach Bela Karolyi. Not everyone thinks it is a great nickname for the gymnast. In an interview, former Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes expressed her dislike of the nickanme saying, "I do not like the nickname. I'm going to call her 'Doin' It Douglas' or 'Wowing It Douglas.'" Whatever her nickname, Gabby Douglas flew to new heights in the 2012 Olympics. (Question and extra information submitted by unterkircher)

10. The equestrian events required a great deal of open space. Which royal park was utilised as the venue for the equestrian events during the Olympics?

From Quiz What Went On Where?

Answer: Greenwich Park

Greenwich Park is a 180 acre space located within the Greenwich World Heritage Site. For the Olympics, a 23,000 seat arena was constructed overlooking the Queen's House that was utilised for the dressage and jumping competitions, as well as two of the three elements of the eventing. Within the wider park, a 5,800m cross-country course was also created for the third element of the eventing competition. Following the conclusion of the equestrian events, the venue was then used for both the riding and combined running/shooting elements of the Modern Pentathlon, the latter of which required the design of a 3,000m cross-country running course. Following the Olympics, the capacity of the arena was reduced to 6,000 for use during the dressage events of the Paralympics.

11. Although some were made by partner companies of the games, the main collection of badges were designed by the organising committee. Which apt number is the size of this main collection?

From Quiz Team Eggheads at the Olympics

27. This gymnast gave a repeat performance by falling on vault two Olympics in a row both in qualifications at the 2008 Olympics and in the All-Around final at the 2012 Olympics. Who is she?

From Quiz WAG at the 2012 Olympic Games

Answer: Hannah Whelan

It is a requirement that all gymnasts land feet first for them to get any score at all. Therefore, if a gymnast lands on her hands first or any other body part she would be credited with a zero because the vault would be considered invalid. At the 2008 Olympics, gymnasts lost an automatic .8 points off their scores if they fall but still land feet first. At the 2008 Olympics Hannah Whelan fell on vault and got a score of 13.5 (that means she would've gotten a 14.3 without the fall). However, in 2012 she did not meet the requirement of falling feet first and so was given a score of zero as the vault was considered invalid. Because of it she finished dead last in the All-Around final when she actually qualified in 17th position out of 24 finalists.

The judges had to go to a photo to decide the winner, and the gold was eventually given to Spirig by one-one hundredth of a second. Australia's Erin Densham who led for most of the third leg of the race was beaten in the last fifty metres of the run. She came in two seconds later to take the bronze in one of the most thrilling of finishes to take place during the Games.
