Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Copper Box was one of the permanent venues built within the main Olympic Park. Which sport was it the main host venue for during the Olympics?

Answer: Handball

The Copper Box was planned as one of the four permanent venues to be built within the Olympic Park site at Stratford, alongside the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre and Velodrome. Intended as a multi-sport venue, the 7,000 seat arena was utilised primarily for the handball competitions, with the group phase of the men's competition, and the group phase and quarter-finals of the women's competition held there, before the final stages were held at the larger Basketball Arena. Upon the completion of the handball competitions, the venue was then used to host the fencing element of the Modern Pentathlon competitions, while at the Paralympics it was used for the goalball competitions.
2. The equestrian events required a great deal of open space. Which royal park was utilised as the venue for the equestrian events during the Olympics?

Answer: Greenwich Park

Greenwich Park is a 180 acre space located within the Greenwich World Heritage Site. For the Olympics, a 23,000 seat arena was constructed overlooking the Queen's House that was utilised for the dressage and jumping competitions, as well as two of the three elements of the eventing. Within the wider park, a 5,800m cross-country course was also created for the third element of the eventing competition. Following the conclusion of the equestrian events, the venue was then used for both the riding and combined running/shooting elements of the Modern Pentathlon, the latter of which required the design of a 3,000m cross-country running course. Following the Olympics, the capacity of the arena was reduced to 6,000 for use during the dressage events of the Paralympics.
3. Better known for a very different sport, which well-known venue was used to host the archery events during the Olympics?

Answer: Lord's

Lord's is a cricket ground located in the St John's Wood area of London. The stadium was chosen as part of the original bid process as the archery venue, which saw a pair of temporary stands constructed on the field itself to house 6,500 spectators, with the competitors placed just in front of the Pavilion and shooting towards targets placed towards the Nursery End. Archery was one of two sports to begin competition before the official start of the Olympics, with the ranking round prior to the main competition taking place on the afternoon of the Opening Ceremony - this took place on the Nursery Ground, a practice field located behind the main ground's Media Centre, with no spectators admitted.
4. Which Historic Royal Palace was utilised to provide the backdrop for the start and finish of the road time trial events that were part of the cycling competition at the Olympics?

Answer: Hampton Court Palace

The time trials took place on road courses laid out on the roads of South-West London and Surrey, encompassing the boroughs of Richmond upon Thames, Kingston upon Thames and Elmbridge. Each event took place over a single lap of the course, with the men's event totalling 44km, and the women's 29km, starting on the main driveway of Hampton Court Palace, a former home of Henry VIII.

The finish line of both courses was on Hampton Court Road, outside the grounds of the palace itself, with the medal ceremonies in front of the palace's famous Tudor style gatehouse.
5. The sailing events at the Olympics were not held at a location near London, but instead took place off the south coast of England at which Dorset town?

Answer: Weymouth

Owing to London's geographical position and lack of a suitable body of water nearby, the sailing events at the 2012 Olympics had to be held at a venue away from the city itself. This is because, although the IOC states that the majority of sports at an Olympic Games must be held in the host city, an exception is made for sailing as it should be held on the open sea. For the sailing events, the town of Weymouth in Dorset was chosen, as it is the location of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, the national centre for sailing in the UK.

This is found adjacent to Weymouth Bay, a large sheltered bay on the Jurassic Coast, which is regarded as having the best sailing waters in northern Europe.
6. The football competitions at the Olympics were played at a number of venues around the United Kingdom. Which city provided the only football venue that was not either a national stadium, or the home of a Premier League club?

Answer: Coventry

A total of six venues were eventually selected for the football competitions, among which were three of the four national stadia in the UK - Wembley Stadium in London, Hampden Park in Glasgow and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Of the other selected venues, the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, the home of Coventry City, was the newest and smallest, capable of seating 32,500.

At the time, Coventry City had just been relegated from the Football League Championship, the second tier of English football (they were relegated from the Premier League in 2001).

The stadium hosted a total of twelve matches, with five in the men's competition and seven, including the Bronze Medal Match, in the women's competition.
7. Horse Guards Parade was famously used as the venue for the beach volleyball competitions, but which other sport also utilised a military venue for its competitions?

Answer: Shooting

The shooting events at the Olympics were originally planned to be held at the National Shooting Centre, located at Bisley in Surrey. However, the IOC expressed concerns about the distance between that venue and London itself, which led to a rethink, and the choice of the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich as an alternative.

The Royal Artillery Barracks has been in use as a military garrison since 1774, when it was constructed as the regimental headquarters of the Royal Artillery. For the Olympics, a temporary venue was constructed for the pistol and rifle events, which was subsequently removed and reused for the shooting events at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, while a separate outdoor venue with three ranges was installed for the shotgun events. Shooting provided the first champion of the Games, when Yi Siling of China won the Women's 10m air rifle competition at Woolwich.
8. Originally, the rhythmic gymnastics events were to have been held at a temporary venue. This was cancelled due to cost, with rhythmic gymnastics moved to which existing venue?

Answer: Wembley Arena

Wembley Arena was originally built for the 1934 Empire Games, which were held in London, and was known as the Empire Pool, as it housed a competition standard aquatics centre. In this role, it was the venue of the aquatics events for the 1948 Olympics (one of two venues that were used in both 1948 and 2012, the other being Earl's Court).

However, it was not part of the original bid for the 2012 Olympics, as the plan had been for a larger number of temporary venues to be constructed closer to the Olympic Park. One of these was intended to be a venue next to the O2 Arena in North Greenwich, which was to house both the badminton and rhythmic gymnastics competitions.

When cost restrictions were put in place, these temporary venues were cancelled, and more use was made of existing sites in London, one of which was Wembley Arena, which had undergone a major renovation between 2005 and 2006, and saw itself named as the host venue for both badminton and rhythmic gymnastics.
9. The ExCeL was a major venue during the Olympics, hosting a number of different sports. Which of the following was NOT held at the ExCeL?

Answer: Trampolining

The ExCeL (an abbreviation of Exhibition Centre London) is a major exhibition and conferencing facility located on the north side of the Royal Victoria Dock in London's Docklands. Thanks to its size, the ExCeL was to be utilised as a major venue for a number of indoor sports during the Olympics.

The building was divided into a total of five individual halls for different sports, each seating between 4,000 and 6,000, and hosting seven different sports during the Games - boxing, fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling.

The halls were kept in place for the Paralympics, with six sports taking place at the venue. The trampolining competitions, which were part of the overall gymnastics programme, took place at the O2 Arena, which was the main venue for gymnastics at the 2012 Games.
10. The very first event of the 2012 Olympics was the opening football game of the women's competition between Great Britain and New Zealand. Which stadium had the honour of hosting the first event?

Answer: Millennium Stadium

The football competitions at the Olympic Games are usually held at venues around the host country, rather than being centred on the host city itself. For the 2012 Olympics, football venues were initially named as part of the bid from all four countries of the United Kingdom, with Hampden Park in Scotland, the Millennium Stadium in Wales and Windsor Park in Northern Ireland all included as part of the original bid.

Although Windsor Park was subsequently dropped, both Hampden Park and the Millennium Stadium were retained, with both being major national venues for football.

At 4.00pm on Wednesday 25 July, two days prior to the Opening Ceremony, Great Britain and New Zealand kicked-off in the first game of Group E of the Women's competition at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, with 24,445 there to see Steph Houghton score the only goal of the game to give Team GB a 1-0 win.
