Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Chinese pair Zhang Yanquan and Cao Yuan won gold at the 2012 Olympics men's 10 metres synchronised diving, and bravely so, as one was recovering from an injury to his leg. What was that injury?

Answer: Fractured tibia

Cao Yuan was still limping quite badly as he moved around the pool area during his dives, but this didn't deter the compact champion who only weighed 42 kgm. The champion pair received a total of 486.78 for their six dives and came out almost twenty points ahead of the Mexican divers, who took the silver medal, and the USA divers who scored the bronze.
2. In the lead up to the tennis final in the 2012 Olympics, an engrossing tennis match took place between Roger Federer of Switzerland and Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina. Did Federer win?

Answer: Yes

This amazing semi-final game lasted for four hours and twenty-six minutes. Del Potro won the first set, Federer took the second set in a nail biter, and then the third set began. It was this set that blew everyone away. Spectators at the game went wild with excitement at every shot played as the length of the set grew longer and longer.

It finally concluded in Federer's favour with the amazing result of 3-6, 7-6, 19-17. Sadly, after such a sterling effort, the great Federer went down in somewhat of a train wreck to the British champion Andy Murray in the final.

A fitting result perhaps, considering Murray lost to Federer in the Wimbledon final that year.
3. Long distance track runner Tirunesh Dibaba took out the women's 10,000 metres at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. This champion represented which nation on the Horn of Africa?

Answer: Ethiopia

That was one impressive event. Not only did Dibaba win the gold at this event which saw the crowd roar itself hoarse for the entire 10,000 metres, she broke the world record into the bargain. Second and third went to the runners from Kenya. Dibaba, with an impressive number of world winning races to her credit is known among her compatriots as the "Baby Faced Destroyer".
4. The women's triathlon at the 2012 Olympics was described as one of the closest finishes in Olympic history. Amazingly so, how many seconds initially separated the first two athletes to cross the line?

Answer: 0

Of the three medal winners in this engrossing event, only two seconds all up separated first and third place winners. Both Nicola Spirig of Switzerland and Lisa Norden hit the line in the same time of 1:59.48. The judges had to go to a photo to decide the winner, and the gold was eventually given to Spirig by one-one hundredth of a second. Australia's Erin Densham who led for most of the third leg of the race was beaten in the last fifty metres of the run.

She came in two seconds later to take the bronze in one of the most thrilling of finishes to take place during the Games.
5. The conclusion of the men's 20 kilometre walk at the 2012 Olympics was memorable for two things. One was the excitement of the winner, Chen Ding, from China. The other was the silver medallist from Guatemala, Erick Barrondo. What was so remarkable about Barrondo's placement that sees it included in this quiz?

Answer: He was the first-ever Olympic medal winner from his country

Barrondo was born in Guatemala in 1991. His career began as a long distance runner but injury saw him switch to the walk instead. This proved to be an excellent decision for his country. Guatemala had never won a medal of any kind at the Olympics. The event was absolutely engrossing to watch, not only for Barrondo's outstanding effort, but for the happiness displayed by the winner. Amusingly so, Chen Ding from China began celebrating his win several kilometres from the finishing line, smiling and waving to the cheering crowds as he powered along.
6. In which alphabetical order did the three winning countries of the women's marathon cross the line in the 2012 London Olympics?

Answer: Ethiopia, Kenya, Russia

Carried out in pouring rain for most of the course, Tiki Gelana from Ethiopia won the gold medal in a time of 2:23.07. Her Kenyan rival, Priscah Jeptoo, took silver in the time of 2:23.12. The bronze medal winner from Russia, Tatyana Patrova Arkhipova came from nowhere in the last quarter of the race and crossed third in the time of 2:23.29.

In a day known for its shocking weather, the women all looked like drenched, half-starved waifs as they crossed the line - but their hearts were those of true champions.
7. The incredibly hard fought men's 10,000 metres at the 2012 London games was taken out by the champion from Great Britain. USA took the silver is a burst of brilliant speed. What was remarkable about the third and fourth placegetters from Ethiopia?

Answer: They were brothers

Mo Farah from Great Britain won the gold. Galen Rupp from the US gained the silver. Tariku Bekele won bronze, beating out his brother Kenenisa by a nose. This closely contested race was one of the most exciting events in the entire Olympics to watch. As the crowds in the packed stadium went wild with excitement, the brilliant Farah went on to take the gold in the 5,000 metres as well.
8. The emotional gold medal win of Felix Sanchez in the men's 400 metres hurdle was made even more poignant when it was revealed he had carried a photo of which deceased family member with him during the race?

Answer: His grandmother

Representing the Dominican Republic, Sanchez's sterling career included gold in the Athens Olympics for the same event, World championship wins in 2001 and 2003, and almost fifty other world class wins in between times. In 2012 he became the oldest man to win the gold in this event for the second time at the Olympics.

His much loved grandmother passed away during the Beijing Olympics, and after his win four years later in London, he pulled out a photograph of her that he had carried with him during the race as his tribute to her memory. Later, overcome with emotion, he wept for the entire length of the medal presentation ceremony and its concluding anthem.
9. Michael Phelps announced his retirement after swimming his last race at the 2012 Olympics Games. What happened then?

Answer: He came out of retirement and returned for the 2016 Olympics

Michael Phelps was just amazing. There are no other words to describe this champion swimmer. After announcing his retirement in 2012, he returned to the pool for the 2016 Olympics, winning another five medals and one silver. His entire swimming career including various World championships, Pan Pacific Championships, and the Olympics, concluded with a total of sixty-six gold, fourteen silver and three bronze medals in all. He is considered to be the greatest Olympian of all time. It's difficult to imagine that anyone could beat his astonishing record - but who knows?
10. This Chinese male trampoline gymnast won bronze for his event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics but took out the gold medal in the 2012 London Games. What was his name?

Answer: Dong Dong

Dong's performance was breathtaking in fact. Born in a province in central China in 1989, this champion trampoline gymnast also won the world championship for the sport in 2009. In the words of the Scrambled Eggheads assistant team leader, Dong Dong went "Boing, Boing" to take the gold.
