The Madison Kodiaks came to Kalamazoo on July 27, 2000, to replace the defunct IHL Michigan K-Wings. The Wings were forced to fold after the Dallas Stars ended their affiliation agreement with the Wings. In the IHL an NHL affiliate was a requirement for teams, it was equal to what the American Hockey League is today. Basically it was AAA hockey or one level below the big leagues where an affiliation is a must.

Less then 2 minutes later, Kalamazoo answered with Thelen's 4th of the postseason from Daavettila at 15:51 to tie it at two each. Alaska would score with one of their own at 18:53 to take the lead. Anderson got his 2nd goal of the playoffs from Fraser and Swanson. This goal proved to be pivotal as the Aces went 49-0 when leading after 2 all year. Langkow gave Alaska some insurance with his 8th of the playoffs and 2nd of the night, unassisted, at 14:29 of the 3rd to make it 4-2 Aces. Kalamazoo came within one with Daavettila's 6th of the playoffs from Fournier and Ftorek at 16:01. The Aces answered back in less then a minute for the 2nd time on the night, Fraser got his 6th of postseason from Anderson at 16:29 to make it 5-3 Aces.
