Jessica and Gary are soon awakened by screaming in their son Dane's room. There's been a horrible accident; Katie used a metal hook to stab Dane in his sleep. From the hospital, Jessica calls Mike. Child psychologist Mike Painter appears on television to discuss his new book. The host brings up a touchy subject-- five kids, including his own brother, Eddie, were killed in Ohio, in the late 1980s. His identical twin brother was the only one who was never found. He hasn't even returned to Iron Hill since then. Things get uncomfortable when the host brings out a phone; on the other end is a twelve-year-old boy with issues of his own, and Mike is somewhat forced to take the call. On the other end of the line, the boy laughs and the crackle of a television can be heard. The boy asks 'when are you going to come home?' before Mike hangs up. The cameras are still turned to him; the host stares at him, almost vacantly, and it seems that everyone is frozen. The phone rings.

At the hospital, Jessica walks her son, Dane, down the halls and they pass by a wall of children's drawings. Almost all of them depict images from 'Candle Cove'. They head to Katie's room for a visit and the two kids make their apologies before Jess notices that Dane is missing a tooth. As they leave, they don't notice the tooth in Katie's hand. She smiles as they depart. Mike calls his wife, Erika, who is in Seattle on business, to let her know that Lily is with him. She says she'll be on the next flight. In the Iron Hill jail, Jess visits Gary's cell. He urges her to go home, grab their gun, and keep it on her at all times just in case. When she leaves, she gets a call from Mike. He needs a favour.

Mike notices that there are no pictures of himself or Eddie around, or of their father. Katie's accomplishments cover the fridge. Marla asks why he came back. She's happy to see him, but she doesn't understand. She doesn't want him to come back simply to pry into the murders. Someone always does.

Mike asks Erica to trust him, but she refuses to believe that Lily is somewhere only he can go. When it's clear that she won't let up, Mike has no choice but to let her follow along in hopes that he can accomplish his goal with her around.

They let themselves in, and while Mike heads straight to the basement, Gary is distracted by something he sees by chance outside the kitchen window. There's a wooden stake outside, and atop it are three teeth. Mike finds the dolls in the basement, but realizes that they're just fakes. They aren't the right dolls. He's distracted when the phone rings and he answers it. It's Mrs. Booth, and she has so much to tell him.

Amy discovers that the mushroom gift she received was from one of her colleagues who, in an attempt to put himself out there, tried to score a date with her. She brushes this off since she's deep into Eddie Painter's file. In 1988, Mike and Jess met Eddie out by the abandoned water park. Eddie thought that they were becoming boyfriend and girlfriend back then. In the present day, Jess heads to the Painter household with spare clothes for Lily. Introductions are made, but it's clear that something is a bit wrong with Mike's daughter. She tells them that she likes pirates before locating Eddie's Percy Pirate doll under the piano and explaining that she's not Lily.

Marla checks in with the local TV station to inquire about 'Candle Cove' and she, surprisingly, gets a bit of intriguing help from the man working there. He's as surprised as anyone else that the show is back on TV-- it certainly wasn't on his watch-- but he does have an old recording or two laying around. When Marla watches it, however, it becomes apparent it's not the real thing. The man at the station admits it's a fan-fic of the 'Candle Cove' world, but it would've been impossible to record 'Candle Cove' back in the 1980s. Not only was there a weird problem with the signal for it, but it was never on the same channel. Usually, kids would find it near the end of the dial on a dead channel; it was never on a network. It was a pirate signal for a pirate show.

Amy heads through the woods alone on the hunt for Mrs. Booth and she finds her way to the trailer with her gun raised. She nears the shelter and heads inside, but there's no one there, as it seems. After a quick search, she turns around to find a boy watching her, but he won't speak. Mike and Erica head out to the fields and find Lily laying out there, alone. Erica nearly runs to her daughter's aid, but Mike stops her as they watch Eddie, the tooth boy, emerge from the trees. He tells Erica to wait for when Lily awakens and he heads off to his brother. As he foresaw in his dreams, Eddie pushes himself inside through Mike's mouth, and when Erica moves closer to both her husband and daughter, they're both unconscious...and alone.

Mrs. Booth, worried about Gary's likely irrationality, asks Mike to meet her somewhere to talk. He ends up leaving Gary at Mrs. Booth's house alone, and after calling Amy he decides not to wait around. 'Candle Cove' plays in town, and the kids watching are coerced into gathering together. Even Katie, still in the hospital, decides it's time to leave her bed. Gary finds it empty when he arrives.

Mike plays war with Lily, much like he did with Eddie when they were kids, before she sees a figure in the doorway behind her father. Mike turns around and sees it too before they leave the room. Amy heads to the school with a list of kids that she needs to speak to. The principal finds that they're all in the same class-- Mrs. Booth's. She'll speak to them after last bell.

Daphne tells Mike that she still dreams about 'Candle Cove', and all of them realize that it's still somewhere out there. Nonetheless, Tim is still confident that all of the kids were killed by Mike back then, but Mike says he didn't have a choice. Back in 1988, Mike brought Gene to the Crow's Nest and there, Eddie told him that he would never be able to lie to the Skin-Taker. Getting into Gene's mind, he made it so that he would never be able to think again. Using telepathy, Eddie has Gene 'pay the toll', forcing him to remove his front teeth and walk the plank, sending him off the cliff to Candle Cove. Eddie, Mike claims, killed the kids.

Mike isn't really thrilled to be there; everyone at the dinner, including Gary and his wife, Jessica, get involved in discussing why Iron Hill is no longer a booming town. Gary's son, Dane, interrupts to argue about his sister hogging the television, and when he leaves Mike talks about how strange they all were when they were kids. Mike and Eddie in particular were a bit weird; they ended up creating their own kingdom in which they were the kings. They would spend weekends watching hours and hours of television, and things got weird. Mike heads to the bathroom and finds Gary and Jessica's daughter, Katie, standing in front of a television. She doesn't reveal what she was watching...but it's gone.

Mike finds himself in a dream as he wakes up in a bedroom to the sound of thunder. The television is tuned to static. He makes his way out to the hallway and shouts for his brother, trying the doors along the way, and gets sidetracked entering a classroom filled with children whose faces have been removed by the Skin-Taker. He returns to the hall to find the Skin-Taker himself, and goes face to face with the creature as it smashes into walls and sets itself ablaze before him. Mike is able to pass through when the creature realizes he won't back down.

Amy returns to the station and discovers that none of her deputies have located any of the kids they needed to bring in. They switch tactics, now needing to find Mike. mike is at Skinner's, the old, abandoned restaurant outside of Iron Hill, next door to the empty water park. One of the deputies, Simon, finds Mike moments after he arrives, and though he's nearly distracted into following some kids crossing a nearby field, Mike convinces him to wait, just for a moment, while he goes inside, urging him not to run into any danger. As soon as Mike goes inside, Simon makes the unwise decision to explore a bit, following the children out back to the water slide. It's a bad idea; Mike watches from inside as a figure dressed as Jawbone kills him, surrounded by the kids. Mike heads outside to investigate, but the pain from his toothache is overwhelming and he collapses, barely making out Mrs. Booth's face when she pulls back her mask.

Amy ends up driving out to find Tim while Marla and Jessica wait for Gary to return home. When she drives through town though, she's stopped by an older woman who alerts her to the fact that a group of kids is attacking someone in a nearby field. As she nears them, she finds that they're using fake knives to attack what appears to be a dummy. At Jessica's place, she asks Marla why Gary would arrest Mike, but she simply lets it slip that Mike did something unforgivable. She tells Marla that for the past while, she and Mike had been texting and emailing each other fairly regularly until the communications simply stopped. Jessica quickly realizes that there's a key missing from the ring in the kitchen drawer. She knows where they can find Mike.

Mike returns to the table and immediately brings up 'Candle Cove', the show that was on TV in 1988 for only two months. Jessica says she would never talk to her kids about it, but Katie says she was watching it. Jawbone, Mike remembers, was one of the characters; he was a skeleton in a robe and black hat who would chase around Pirate Percy. Mike has horrible memories of the show. Partway through the discussion, Mike decides to leave. He ends up walking home, striding into the fields outside of town closer to sunrise. He remembers his brother, Eddie, fighting bullies, breaking his finger before all was said and done. That night, when he found him crying in the living room, the television turned on on its own. 'Candle Cove' was on it.

Mike continues to find a room containing large swaths of skin hanging from the ceiling; the Skin-Taker, as Mike discovers when he meets Eddie in this room, is actually Jawbone. Eddie says that he doesn't like the Skin-Taker, but when he goes home and Mike will need to stay inside, he'll keep him company. Mike asks to see his daughter, and he's brought back to the hallway to find her alone there. Eddie says that it's Mike's turn to stay though, since Mike killed him. Mike tells Lily that everything is real and he whispers in her ear not to listen to anything Eddie says to her before she crawls out the television and back into reality. Erica is there when she awakens.

Jess tries to convince Mike that he doesn't need to go and investigate Eddie's body to find the answers he's looking for. He says that there's not really another path he needs to take. He remembers back in 1988 when Jessica told him that she was expecting to meet him up at the Crow's Nest. It was actually Eddie who called her, intending to take her to Candle Cove. As he left to meet his brother, he told Jess that she could always tell the boys apart because Eddie had an extra tooth. When Mike found him waiting, he also found that he was armed with a hook. The boys fought on the edge of the cliff before Mike got the upper hand, taking the hook and running.

Marla returns home to find the picture Mike found at the hospital and she recognizes the railroad track into the tunnel; it must be the cement plant up near the old rail yard. On the walk, Mike asks how Marla does it-- he sees Eddie everywhere in Iron Hill-- but she says that going somewhere new wouldn't change what happened. She sent Mike away to protect him, but she always wondered if Eddie would return. As they near the cement plant, a storm brews in the distance. Mike sees someone entering the building from afar. Marla wants to call Gary, but Mike presses onward alone.

Marla runs chores around her house, but finds her attentions diverted when she heads back inside. Mrs. Booth has let herself in, and she's armed. Mike comes alone this time, returning to his mother's house and sitting at the kitchen table for their long-awaited talk. Mrs. Booth serves them food and urges them to eat, but neither of the Painters are hungry. Marla is shocked that Mrs. Booth comforted her when Eddie died considering she took him away, but Mrs. Booth says that they can finally have their reunion. Mike asks about 'Candle Cove', and Mrs. Booth says that she found purpose in everything that happened.

Heading through the halls of the school, Amy has trouble tracking down the kids she's looking for; they seem to be leading her on a chase through the corridors. She reaches a darkened computer lab, not noticing as the monitors turn on to depict Jawbone watching her from the screens. She finds the four kids in the auditorium pretending to be the characters from 'Candle Cove'. Realizing that Mrs. Booth never told the kids to go to the office and that they have no supervision, she sends them all home. In the hospital, Jess wakes up next to Katie's bed and thinks about the possibilities. Thinking back to Lily, she decides to leave and drives back out to the Painter house. She decides she's going with Mike.

Mike continues to the empty cement plant alone and finds the person he's pursuing heading up the metal stairways to the roof. He follows along, ascending to the upper-most floor of the structure much like he used to when he and Eddie played in the abandoned facility. He heads through a broken-through wall, seeing the person he's following knowingly sink into the darkness beyond, and when he rounds the corner he sees something truly terrifying... it's a long-dead body of a child surrounded by lit candles. The police are called in.

Gary and Jessica wake up early, and when Jessica checks in on Katie she finds that she's not in bed. In fact, she doesn't seem to be in the house. That afternoon, Mike ends up at a diner, running into an old English teacher. While there, however, his meal is interrupted by Jessica who comes in looking for Mike; Katie is missing. They head out to the woods where Mike remembers Eddie and another encounter with the local bullies. That day, Mike and Eddie were nearly attacked by the bully's dog, but Eddie seemed to be able to get it onto his side. Gary asks if Mike brought up 'Candle Cove' or if Katie did. She did. They find it all a bit odd. They don't even know what channel it was on.

Mike asks Eddie what he'll do when he goes back into the real world. Eddie claims that when he goes into the real world in his spirit form he has to hide like a monster, but now he can go out as Mike. In the woods, Amy continues to look for Mrs. Booth. It's Marla who finds her first, though. Mrs. Booth says that, for years, Eddie went to her for comfort instead of his own mother. She brandishes her hook as Marla tries to pass by, and when it's clear that Marla won't relent, she jabs her several times. Marla's screams cause Amy to find the two of them, and within a matter of moments, Mrs. Booth is shot in the neck. With adrenaline, Marla is able to pick up the hook and drive it into the back of Mrs. Booth's head, ending her once and for all as Amy calls for an ambulance. Eddie handily wins the card game against Mike and the boy says that it's time for him to leave. Mike says that he should let his negativity go and do some good in the world, but Eddie claims that he has been. They both say goodbye as Eddie leaves his brother in his own world.

Mrs. Booth continues, insisting that she was always just a void, but after Eddie showed her his powers in the classroom and saved her from her seizures, she found something magnificent. She admits that she never created 'Candle Cove'-- Eddie did, and it rose out of his powers of its own accord. Mike always figured that 'Candle Cove' found Eddie; it was the other way around. And he's dead, but only in a literal sense. He's almost ready to return. In 1988, Mrs. Booth made her sacrifice for his power. When Eddie asked for more power, she conceded to his will, allowing him to take her own son as sacrifice. She fed the fire so it could burn even brighter. Now it's their turn.

Amy leaves a restaurant with her dinner and hops into her police vehicle. Turning onto the bridge crossing Iron Hill, she doesn't notice the four children following her. Jess and Mike end up at the morgue and, using Gary's keys, gain access to the unit containing Eddie's body. They take the skeleton and burn it out in the woods. At the Painter household, Marla watches as Lily draws a picture. They share in a quick dinner and Marla acknowledges that she's always been very good at drawing. She tucks her granddaughter in and reads to her. The book she chooses: "Treasure Island".
