Mercedes says she wants to be the spectacle that is Michael, especially since the girls missed out on their opportunity to perform one of the greatest pop figures' numbers on their own. When Will suggests that, perhaps, they should all get a Jackson number ready for Regionals, Blaine recommends "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", a number the kids take to the auditorium stage to perform.

Walking outside during their lunch break, the girls of New Directions (and Kurt) sit down at a table and Tina asks Mercedes about what really happened between herself and Sam during summer vacation. In the bleachers at the football field, Sam decides to tell the guys his side of the story as well (while wearing a leather jacket). Unsurprisingly, this leads into a version of the "Grease" classic "Summer Nights" with Mercedes and Sam filling the roles of Sandy and Danny while the rest of New Directions backs the song.

In the choir room, Mercedes decorates a Christmas tree while singing Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas". Of course, she's joined by the rest of New Directions, filled with Christmas cheer. During the song, Mercedes pays a bit of attention to Sam and ends the number by holding mistletoe over Rachel and Finn. After a kiss, Rachel dubs this year the best Christmas ever. After rehearsal, Rachel stops by Finn's locker to give him her Christmas wish list since he's been having trouble. In the locker room, Finn tries to get gift ideas from the other guys (including socks and a wok). Kurt overhears and immediately tells Rachel. Rachel says that he just needs to get her five of the fifteen things on her list.

Quinn finds Rachel in the halls at school even though she's been suspended for a week. Rachel's only there to pick up work though she offers vocal coaching in case Quinn wants to up her A-game for Sectionals. Quinn has other plans though; she wants to alert the school's higher-ups to the fact that Puck and Shelby Corcoran have been sleeping together-- she heard it from Puck himself. Rachel says that Puck is 18 so it's completely legal, and even if Shelby does get fired, she'd just be making Beth's life all the worse...and if she does that, then she's really hit rock-bottom. While Will tries to get Finn to think about the Sectionals setlist, Finn thinks that they need to think about their roster-- they need star power when they step on the stage in their auditorium. Sam Evans, he thinks, would be a good idea. Will says that Sam moved away to Kentucky, but Finn reasons that it isn't that far away.

In Principal Figgins' office, Santana has a conversation overseen by Shelby, Will, and Finn in which she tries to avoid getting a two week suspension for slapping Finn in the face the previous week. She claims that a second personality was responsible but none of the teachers take kindly to this idea. Finn, however, steps up and says she didn't hit him; it was a stage slap. Will wonders what Finn's angle is, but he gets away with it. Santana is off the hook. Finn apologizes to Santana for everything that's gone on, but he really thinks she's a good person. She unearths the truth though-- he did it to get her and the other Trouble Tones back into the New Directions.

Puck starts to realize the depth of his feelings for Shelby Corcoran and makes every attempt to get her to notice him. He longs for fourth period where Shelby is covering his geometry class but he ends up spending most of his time daydreaming anyways. His latest vision is of the class rambunctiously breaking loose to perform Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher" while Ms. Corcoran walks along a stage. The number progresses to the choir room where Puck, Blaine, Mike, and Finn all perform the song for New Directions. Will loves the song-- especially the fact that they didn't even need an assignment to put it together. Rachel thinks it's energetic, but a little inappropriate and Will says it really depends on Puck's motivation. Puck says he just really likes Van Halen and that seems to be enough.

Artie rolls through the halls feeling really good about himself; things have been looking up for him since he started directing the school musical and he's realized that the key to getting things done is bossing people around and having opinions on everything-- even things he doesn't have knowledge about. He, Emma, and Bieste oversee a rehearsal of "Tonight" performed as a duet by Rachel and Blaine. Bieste is moved to tears but Artie makes a note that the two of them lack passion. He asks them, rather blatantly, if they've lost their virginity (at which point both Emma and Bieste leave uncomfortably) and they both claim to be waiting for the right moment. Artie suggests that perhaps they can't convey the proper emotion when they haven't experienced one of the most primal urges of humanity.

As the school day begins, Brittany is approached by Rory, an Irish exchange student who's having his first day at McKinley. He also happens to be living at her house on the exchange. Brittany believes that he's a leprechaun and while she doesn't really understand him because of his Irish accent, she asks for an all-marshmallow box of Lucky Charms, her favourite cereal. He says he'll be able to do it. When she leaves, Finn watches as he gets bullied by other kids. Puck and Quinn visit Shelby in the teacher's lounge and offer their babysitting services in order to let her get some rest; she's visibly fatigued. She allows them to take care of Beth. Sue, meanwhile, hosts another installment of Sue's Corner, calling out government waste and asks viewers to call McKinley to get the school production of "West Side Story" canceled.

At New Directions' Booty Camp, Mercedes shows up late complaining that she overslept (even though it's 4:30pm). Before she can take three steps on the routine being practiced, she starts to feel sick and heads to a nearby trash can. Santana, back in New Directions after swearing her loyalty, claims that Mercedes is only sick because she ate Quizno's and Mercedes doesn't deny it-- she's been too stressed with everything she's had to do over the last while and she claims she's putting 100% effort in. Will thinks she isn't and that it's not about doing your best anymore; it's about doing better. At home, Will finds Emma's stash of bridal magazines and confronts her about it. He says he's not worried because it's the direction they're heading, but he wonders why he hasn't met her parents yet. She says they're dead; he rebuts with the fact that she called them last night. She says instead that she just wants to take things slow.

In this episode, Kurt starts his school day by tending to his appearance in his locker and Brittany shows up for a chat. She's decided that she wants to help him run for Senior Class President because he's fabulous and because he's a unicorn; he knows he's magical and he's not afraid to show it. He asks why she doesn't run since she's so popular and she claims that she's not smart enough to run. She seems enthusiastic, however, and he accepts her offer. In the choir room, Will informs the Glee kids that Dustin Goolsby has been fired as the head coach of Vocal Adrenaline since they came in second place at Nationals the previous year. As such, he will no longer direct the school musical; someone else will take on that role.

Finn approaches Rachel for an answer to his engagement proposal (made exactly three days earlier) but she's hesitant to give an answer since it all seems so fast and so early. She assures him that he's the only guy for her, but he says that if they're going to be together regardless there shouldn't be any problems. Finn finally concedes and lets her take more time to think about her response. At the Lima Bean, some of the New Directions discuss the works of Michael Jackson and, surprisingly, Rachel says she never really connected with him as an artist. When Sebastian, the head member of the Dalton Academy Warblers, stops by for a quick chat, he says that his club drew the first slot at Regionals and that they'll be performing Michael Jackson because Blaine accidentally let it slip over the phone that New Directions was doing the same.

In the school, Becky Jackson psychs herself up in her mind (with a British accent) and follows her own internal monologue through the halls on the hunt for a boyfriend. She passes by Rory, who she thinks grins too much and looks insane, Puck, who she doesn't like because his mohawk looks like a squirrel was glued to his head, and Mike, who isn't her type ("No-Chang-do; I'm no rice queen.") She decides on Artie, who's sweet, sexy, and handicapable like her. When she asks Sue for a bit of guidance on the subject, she suggests that Becky should ask him out on a date, but frankly she can do better.

Sue invites Artie, Kurt, and Blaine into her office because Christmas is upon them. Since Christmas is a time for forgiveness, she forgives the fact that they have no talent and that they're ruining the 'Great American Songbook' one mash-up at a time. She also says that she's volunteering at the Lima Homeless Shelter (which, as Kurt says, is odd for her. In her campaign she said she didn't believe in homelessness). Sue says that this is the first Christmas without her sister and that she'd appreciate it if the Glee Club joined her to sing and spread Christmas cheer. The trio agrees. In the choir room, Rory tells the kids that his mother was planning on flying to Ohio for the holidays, but she had to cancel due to plane costs. He decides to sing Elvis Presley's "Blue Christmas" to cheer himself up. Santana says that it's a depressing number. Everyone agrees that this year is their year to have a good holiday.

Kurt is worried that his chances at NYADA are botched and Blaine says that he's worried about New Directions' chances at Sectionals, especially since he thinks Finn won't let him contribute ideas. Over coffee at the Lima Bean, they're approached by the Warblers' Sebastian. Sebastian starts to flirt with Blaine and notes the Warblers' Sectionals win. When Blaine gets up for a coffee, Kurt and Sebastian swap insults, Kurt making it very clear that he does not like anything about him. They keep their argument quiet when Blaine returns. Rachel and Finn travel to Kentucky to locate Sam and they reach their final destination, an establishment known as Stallionz. They attempt to reason that it's a dinner theater but when Sam emerges onstage it turns out that he's a male stripper. Rachel asks Finn for a dollar and she approaches the stage.

Rachel is worried about Kurt's election prospects and the votes seem to be in Brittany's favour. Jacob Ben Israel, planning for his blog, asks if he can upload an early concession speech but Kurt won't back down. When Jacob leaves, he tells Rachel that he could always stuff the ballot box like JFK did in Illinois. Rachel says he shouldn't cheat, but Kurt wonders what choice he has. He needs to get into NYADA and this is how. In the choir room, New Directions and the Trouble Tones discuss this week's assignment, as decided by Finn: 'Lady Music Week'. It's a week of music created by ladies for ladies. He directs this toward Santana and she puts up a defensive wall, but he makes it clear that they're there to support her. Blaine and Kurt sing P!nk's "Perfect" to kick the festivities off. It doesn't go well; Santana tears them down after.

Finn helps Rachel put up campaign posters in the school hallways and she asks who he's voting for. When she makes it clear that she's confident and excited for their future he informs her that a football talent scout is coming from Ohio State to recruit for next year. Rachel is, surprisingly, thrilled with this as it gets him out of Lima on a brighter path. Finn decides to invite her over since Burt and Carol are out for the week. She accepts the invitation. Kurt talks to Blaine about their relationship and Kurt feels horrible for making Blaine wait before they commit to a more physical relationship. Blaine says he's okay with it though-- he could never be comfortable unless Kurt were comfortable as well. Kurt asks him why he doesn't, in a fit of passion, just rip his clothes off; Blaine explains that Kurt wears too many layers.

In Principal Figgins' office, Mike's father suspects that his son might be on drugs because of his waning 'A-' grade in chemistry. Figgins claims that Mike's actually one of the best students in school at the moment and perhaps he's taking this too hard. Instead, Mr. Chang insists that his son is set for Harvard but there are some road blocks standing in his way, particularly his vampiric girlfriend and Glee Club which, as advisers have said, might actually be a detriment. Mike says that he'll pay for a tutor; he just wants to stay in Glee Club. In the football locker room, Coach Beiste informs the guys that they'll all be trying out for dancing roles in "West Side Story" because it's been shown to boost IQ and get footballers on "Dancing with the Stars". Everyone turns to Mike at that moment though he's off in his own mind.

To place focus on New Directions winning Nationals this coming year, Will decides to dedicate more time and energy to the Glee Club this year. In order to be a bit harder on them he institutes a mandatory Booty Camp after practice every week in order to help the more troubled dancers of New Directions better themselves for the coming competition season and Mike Chang will help him out. Amongst those required to join are Finn, Puck, Kurt, and Mercedes. Blaine wants to join as well in order to catch up though he is not required to do so. In regards to the "West Side Story" production, Rachel is disappointed to see that Will has placed Coach Beiste and Emma in charge. They also ask that Artie join as a student director and he gladly accepts with a bit of encouragement from Tina.

In the choir room, the club wonders about Blaine's loyalty to the New Directions considering he let their new Regional plans slip, but Finn backs him up saying that there's nothing to be done about it anymore. Will introduces the kids to the lesson plan-- WWMJD (What Would Michael Jackson Do?)-- and they decide to stand up for their setlist. Finn suggests that they fight back and Blaine says that Michael would take it to the streets...so they do. The members of New Directions meet the Warblers in a parking garage wearing leather jackets and they decide the only way to settle things is a Jackson-off.

In the teacher's lounge, Emma decides to sit with Beiste instead of Will and she discovers that the school's football coach has eloped with her boyfriend, Cooter Menkins, over the holidays and (while at a Taco Bell) they decided to get hitched, go to a twenty-four hour chapel, and become husband and wife. Sue is shocked; this is why he hasn't been returning her calls for weeks. Emma worries because she thinks Will doesn't want to marry her and Sue recommends that she be the one to ask him-- it's 2012 after all. Emma (with Sue and Beiste backing) sings The 5th Dimension's "Wedding Bell Blues", fantasizing about marriage with Will. By the end of the song, she discovers that she inadvertently walked over to Will's table and proposed to him. When she realizes, she embarrassingly runs out of the lounge and Will decides to bring the news to the choir room. He's going to be the one to propose to her. Their assignment this week is to find the perfect proposal number.

Will confirms that this year they will have a great Christmas. In fact, he just got off the phone with the local PBS affiliate. The yule log burning footage cost too much this year, so they want to have the New Directions perform in a Christmas special. Will also nominated Artie as the program director because of his stellar job working on "West Side Story". He decides he needs to think about the offer. Sam talks to Rory about being far away from his family for Christmas and, because he's far away from his own family, he invites him over for the week to celebrate the holidays. The owner of the PBS station speaks to Artie about the Christmas special and Artie makes his demands-- the first is Chewbacca, who came to him in a dream; the second is that it be shot in black and white. The owner says he doesn't care as long as it costs less that $800.

Artie finds Coach Bieste welding in the auditorium and he asks her about her own relationships (because she fled when he brought up sex earlier). She does say, however, that she has seen a guy around who she's been interested in: Cooter Menkins. He's the recruiter from Ohio State but she thinks he's not interested in her. Little does she know, he actually is very much interested; she just deflects his advances. Blaine takes a visit to Dalton Academy to find the Warblers practicing a new version of Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl"; he immediately falls into their movements without a hitch and it seems like one new Warbler has eyes for him. After their performance, Blaine invites them all to see him perform in "West Side Story". The new boy, Sebastian, accepts on their behalf and asks him to coffee.

Everyone is a bit frustrated in the choir room. With Mercedes gone, the group is down one of their best singers. Rachel and Kurt are at each others' backs because of the school election and Rachel is worried that the play will be cut. Will suggests that they sell ads in the play's program to raise enough money and Kurt offers to spearhead this operation. Will assures everyone that they'll get through the rough patch despite Sue and that their dreams will come true this year. Finn finds the new kid, Rory Flanagan, sorting through a few boxes of Lucky Charms in an empty classroom and introduces himself. Rory already knows who Finn is though, having watched the show choir video of him kissing Rachel at Nationals already. Rory explains that he's living with Brittany and he wants to sleep with her; Brittany promised her pot of gold to him if she gets her three wishes. He also says that he'd like to be friends with Finn and the two of them agree to this. Fearing defection from the girls, he asks Rory to keep an ear open in case there's any talk of Santana and Brittany joining Shelby's group.

In the cafeteria, Mercedes gives Rachel a hug and her boyfriend, Shane, says that it was a foolish thing to do since she's her direct competition. He claims that Mercedes needs to know that she's better than Rachel in order to get the part and she gets the confidence boost she needs to perform Jennifer Hudson's "Spotlight" for her audition (with Brittany and Tina) providing backing vocals. In the choir room she watches as Will seems to give preferential treatment to Rachel and she decides that it's her turn to shine. With Shane watching from offstage, Mercedes' performance greatly intrigues the judges and worries Rachel. In the halls, Mike tells Tina that he isn't auditioning for the role of Riff in the play anymore because he got an 'Asian F'. She says that he needs to be honest with his parents to follow his dreams but he thinks it's not that easy.

In order to provide inspiration and to get new kids to join New Directions, Will has received three purple pianos from Motta's Pianos in town for free (since they were from foreclosed homes) and he plans on placing them throughout the school. Every time a member of the glee club sees one, they need to perform a song at it in order to encourage people to join in and become members. In Emma's office, Kurt and Rachel state their plans to go to Julliard together (although Emma initially thinks they're dating and gives them a pamphlet titled 'Me and My Hag'). Emma bursts their bubble by saying that Julliard doesn't have a musical theater program. Instead, they can try a closer college or, if they really want to try the big leagues, the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts, who happens to be holding a local mixer for prospective students this coming week.

In the halls, Sam speaks to Mercedes and tries to convince her to go on a date. He reminds her about how great their summer fling was but she insists that she's with Shane-- summer's over. Elsewhere, Artie tries to convince Sugar to work on a proposal number with him for Mr. Schuester's assignment. She thinks that he's actually asking her out and rejects him because they'd look really weird together. It's not because he's disabled, she claims, but because she's 'abled'. Becky takes the opportunity to ask Artie on a date instead. Sam tries to join the basketball team to get a letterman jacket and win Mercedes over with his athletic abilities but Beiste claims that most of the teams are already in the thick of things having practiced for so long. The only team he can join is synchronized swimming. He decides to go for it and meets the swim coach, Roz Washington, who won a bronze medal in Beijing, China for 'Individual Synchronized Swimming'.

In the auditorium, Rachel sings Joni Mitchell's "River" solo for the New Directions in the hope that Artie will include it in his Christmas special. He decides not to because he thinks it's too depressing, and Christmas is a merry, jovial holiday. His special will star Blaine and Kurt as they host an exciting spectacle of a party at their chic Swiss chalet instead. At the end, Rory will play Itchy, the Christmas Elf, and he'll recite a rebooted version of 'Frosty the Snowman' where Frosty doesn't melt. Rachel and Sam both think that Artie's production is too happy and that part of Christmas is recognizing the sad and knowing that much better things are on the way. Sam decides to visit the Salvation Army and not involve himself.

Puck, Mike, Tina, Artie, and Kurt worry in the choir room; they're bringing along only a handful of their usual musicians and they're still downtrodden. Quinn, however, says she knows for a fact that they're winning. Will brings good news. Sam enters the room and says that true friends have helped him find his way back. They start with the songs right away and pour some champagne in red plastic cups. Sam hops onto the guitar and begins to sing Toby Keith's "Red Solo Cup". After the song, Santana comes into the room excited to insult her ex-boyfriend...she even has a small notebook full of long-waiting put-downs. Sam doesn't let it phase him. In the halls, Quinn and Shelby pass in the halls and give each other an angry passing glance. Quinn approaches Sam instead and suggests that they get back together, apologizing for not appreciating him the previous year. Sam says that she has 'rich, white girl problems' and suggests that she enjoy her senior year to the fullest-- she only gets one.

After class, Puck admits his love for Shelby and she says that while he's a sweet guy, she can't be with a student; she doesn't feel comfortable with it and she would get fired if she decided to go through with it. Puck claims that they're the perfect mash-up since they don't sound like they could go together, but would make an excellent couple. He claims that she feels the same way about him before leaving. Will tells the kids that they have their work cut out for them and that they need to pick an excellent mash-up to go against the girls in the Trouble Tones. The kids all have their ideas, but Finn is the one to suggest Hall and Oates because unlike the other ideas, they stayed together over the long-haul and never broke up. He also recommends that they let their newest member, Rory, take a more prominent role.

Kurt tells Rachel that his only opposition for the presidency is Brittany and the straw polls have him leading by 11%, so he doesn't need to worry about Brittany being taken seriously. While they try to hand out unicorn-themed buttons (created by Brittany for Kurt's campaign the week earlier) Santana and Brittany arrive to ask Rachel who she's voting for. She claims that her fidelity is pledged to Kurt and Brittany claims that her vote's being into the 'magical, poop-stealing water-chair'. Brittany states that the patriarchy surrounding the role of President has only gotten the United States into more trouble than it needs and she's having a flash mob pep rally to get her point across. She breaks into a song and dance to Beyonce's "Run the World (Girls)" which spills into the auditorium and attracts the attention of the female population of the school. Kurt is shocked by the amount of people now in her support (even the female teachers).
