The original Dion version of the song appeared on eight different Billboard charts peaking at number four on the Hot 100. The "Glee" version hit number eighty-seven.

The drinking starts to get a bit out of hand and after a quick game of spin the bottle, Rachel finds a duet partner in Blaine. The two of them take to the stage in her dads' Oscar party room to sing "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League while the others sing and dance drunkenly in front. The original version of "Don't You Want Me" was released in 1981 on The Human League's "Dare" album and it's one of their most well-known singles. This was also the top-selling song from the "Blame It on the Alcohol" episode; the "Glee" version, included in "Glee: The Music, Volume 5" reached number forty-nine on the same chart.

The original version of "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum received great success in 2011, winning four Grammys. Upon its release in 2009 on the album of the same name, it advanced up the Billboard charts to number one, peaking at the top on three of them (and showing on six total). It reached number two on the Hot 100 and ended up on eight Billboard year-end charts and went four times platinum. The "Glee" version, appearing on "Glee: The Music, Volume 5", reached number sixty-two on the Billboard Hot 100. In this particular episode, Puck plays guitar and duets with Rachel in the choir room. The song was performed to show the guys' football team how to perform together. Of course, due to rising tensions, everyone ended up brawling after the song was done.

When she asks what they want to sing, Puck notes a time when his idea to sing Cee-Lo's "Forget You" was junked to make room for another Journey song. In an attempt to win a dinner for two at one of Lima, Ohio's best restaurants, Breadstix, Santana and Mercedes put their differences aside to sing a rendition of Ike and Tina Turner's "River Deep - Mountain High" for their duet assignment. They were the first pair to perform during the episode and they ended up starting the week's performances off with a bang. The original version of the song was released in 1966 though it only reached number eighty-eight on the Billboard Pop Chart. The "Glee" version, which appeared on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4", peaked at number forty-one on the Billboard Hot 100 making it more successful on the charts than the original rendition. Nonetheless, it's often cited by many music media outlets as a classic Turner single.

The first major hit for the show in season 2, "Empire State of Mind" (originally by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys) reached number twenty-one on the Billboard charts and became the highest-selling song from "Audition". To date it would be the fourth-highest charting song from the show (the others, in no particular order, being "Poker Face", "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Don't Stop Believin'"). The original appeared on many year-end charts worldwide and hit number one on three different Billboard charts. It went three times platinum in the U.S. The "Glee" version appeared on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4". In the show, the kids sang this song in order to try and rally up new students for New Directions. With school back in session and the club down one member (after Matt transferred schools) they played "Empire State of Mind" to show people that they weren't all about showtunes. The attention they anticipated didn't really materialize.

New Directions takes on their assignment of the week, the ballad, as one is required for Sectionals. Will's plan is to split everyone off into pairs, forcing them to sing a duet and ballad for themselves. When Matt is unable to attend rehearsal for the week, Rachel is inadvertently paired with Mr. Schuester and they decide to demonstrate the ballad, as a form, to the class. Rachel chooses Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's "Endless Love", during which she ends up following Will around the piano giving eyes that freak him out...and a crush develops. "Endless Love" appeared on "Glee: The Music, Vol. 2" and was released as a single. It reached a peak of #78 on the 'Billboard Hot 100' charts before falling back off.

Boys vs. Girls is the matter at hand, and both sides need to create a suitable mash-up to take to sectionals. The boys take a mash-up of "It's My Life" (by Bon Jovi) and "Confessions, Pt. II" (by Usher). The catch? Terri, who took a position as school nurse, gave them an ingredient used in decongestants to keep them mentally alert. The entire performance is done hyped-up on meds. The "It's My Life"/"Confessions Pt. II" mash-up was released as a single and appeared at #30 on the US Billboard charts, but never made an appearance on the "Glee: The Music, Vol. 1" collection.

Montell Jordan's "This is How We Do It" was released in 1995 and was a notorious debut single for the artist as it reached #1 on three different Billboard (charting on four) making Jordan the first male artist to do so with their first song. The song is from the album of the same name. "Poison" by Bell Biv DeVoe is the first song the Acafellas played in a gig. Neither was released as a single on "Glee: Volume 1". "This is How We Do It" appears in the episode when the guys realize that they may have something going with the hip-hop acapella thing. Will, Ken, Henri, and Howard all meet up at Will's place (without Sandy as he's too creepy to be part of the group) to sing together. Terri makes them stop saying that if she doesn't sleep she could miscarry.

The first song on "Glee: The Music, Volume 6", "Turning Tables" was the only single from the episode to make an appearance on the compilation disc. The original "Turning Tables" was released in 2011 by UK artist Adele on her album "21". Holly is the penultimate performer to take the stage during the night of regret concert and her number expresses her feelings about her and Will's relationship. Finn leads the vocals while they shuffle around in full zombie make-up. Of course, this excitement and camaraderie is short-lived after the hockey team slushies the football guys. The original version of the song by The Zombies was a classic from 1964. Their first single, it reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100; the "Glee" version peaked at number eighty-seven and appeared on "Glee: The Music, Volume 5".

They both mash-up "Singin' in the Rain" (with Will on vocals) with Rihanna's "Umbrella" (with Holly on vocals) and perform with the kids in a rainy auditorium with umbrellas. This mash-up was the best-received mash-up on the show thus far. Originally from "A Chorus Line", "Sing!" was originally the fifth number found in the stageplay which debuted in 1975. One of the longest-running Broadway shows ever created, it won nine Tony Awards. In "Duets", Mike and Tina perform their duet to this song in order to try and win the Breadstix dinner for themselves. To make a true duet, the song required that both Tina and Mike sing, so he took the reins and sang while dancing for this one. "Sing!" reached number eighty-seven on the Billboard Hot 100 though it did not appear on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4". This was the first vocal performance by Mike on the entire show.

Because of Sunshine's singing talents, the fears she would be upstaged. "Telephone" was a hit for Lady GaGa in 2010 from her "The Fame Monster" album.
