19. What was Rimmer's prison sentence for murder?
From Quiz Arnold J. Rimmer
Answer:
9,336 years
8 years per murder count, 1,167 counts. Due to his hologramatic status, he was to serve the counts consecutively. He was convicted of murdering the entire crew of Red Dwarf - 1,169 people, minus himself and Lister, who was in Stasis. He didn't actually kill them, but his own guilt over not fixing the driveplate properly - which caused the radiation leak that wiped out the crew - caused the Mind Scan to think he was responsible. He was acquitted after Kryten's brilliant defense, which painted Rimmer as an incompetent vending repairman with a Napoleon complex.
**NOTE** In the "Justice" episode in which this takes place, the sentencing computer states that for the 1,167 counts, 8 years per count, Rimmer is to serve 9,328 years. HOWEVER 8 times 1,167 equals 9,336. Assuming that a computer out in deep space that long can hardly be blamed for a calculation error, I took it upon myself to provide the correct mathematical answer. For those who are "script-happy", the script answer is 9,328, even though that is mathematically incorrect. I do not see this as being a problem, since only one of these options is in the answer.
Had I provided the script answer, I would no doubt be deluged with notes pointing out the math error, whereas now I am getting notes about the script. I can't win either way. Red Dwarf is full of errors and contradictions; I do my best in these quizzes to provide the correct answer, and when there are blips like this one, explain them.
