A few inside jokes were made in reference in Jared Padalecki's appearance in "House of Wax" along side famous ditz Paris Hilton. Jared and Paris' characters both were killed in that movie.

Castiel actually died at Carver Edlund's home in the previous episode, but we were to see him again. Actor Misha Collins did several pre-premier interviews with the crew about Castiel's return. One of these was an appearance at the summer 2009 Comic-Con. As the brilliant white light (white light interesting) spilled forth from the gate to hell, Sam and Dean found themselves aboard an aircraft over the town below. They discussed, briefly, how that may have happened and went to Carver's home to try and find Castiel. While there, Zachariah the archangel appeared to collect his servant Dean Winchester. Dean had time to create the blood symbol Castiel used to rid them of Zach before, and after labeling the irritant with a few colorful nicknames, he sent him packing.

Gattlin Griffith played Jesse. He was also in the film "Changeling" with Angelina Jolie.

Super "Supernatural" fan Becky Rosen was deeply engrossed in what appeared to be a love story between Sam and Dean of her own creation. She was, obviously, writing fan-fic based on her favorite book series by Carver "Chuck" Edlund when he called her to deliver a message to the Winchesters. She feigned disbelief in the truth behind the stories, but when he said "Becky it's all real", she squealed "I knew it!" After she delivered her message, and touched Sam repeatedly in awe, Bobby arrived with a book on the details of archangel Michael and his sword. Michael was supposedly the baddest archangel of all time, despite Dean's observation on his resemblance to Cate Blanchett, and was the one who'd sent Lucifer to Hell in the beginning. The castle on a hill of 42 dogs was code for John Winchester's storage locker.

A true instrument of God was needed, and neither Winchester felt that applied to them. But, in the end Dean realized it was up to him to do it and it worked! When it worked, in that moment, Dean probably decided to hand his body over to Michael. The stake was made of cypress wood from Babylon and brought to the cause by Castiel.

Colton James played Gary. He's guest starred on "Dexter", "CSI" and "ER".

Bobby lost 25 years in an attempt to win back his legs. Patrick, a witch, used poker as his tool to win years and stay young forever. His wife, Lia, decided to help the men after Dean lost an even bigger amount and became so old that Chad Everett had to play the role. Sam said he could win the years back, after Dean had already won back Bobby's years, but lost his own. Sam was not the poker player Dean was, so Dean and Bobby thought it was a bad idea. And, despite Lia's help with a reversal spell, it ended up being up to Sam to save Dean's life. He did so, and then Lia played Patrick for her own right to die. She spoke of how it pained her to bury her own daughter, when the daughter was a very old woman. Patrick tried to convince her not to leave him, but gave in when he realized how tired she was. He watched her die right before his eyes, after winning enough years from her to accomplish her goal.

Unfortunately, Dean could only get Sam out of the room before Adam was taken away by some unknown force. It could have been Michael or Lucifer, or perhaps even God. Adam' last name is actually Milligan, but he is a Winchester by blood.

The boys were at the hospital visiting Bobby. He'd been injured badly in the episode prior and was possibly never going to walk again. Castiel called on the phone to find their location, and then showed up to get the amulet. Bobby was expecting Castiel to heal him, but the angel explained his powers had been greatly depreciated since his excommunication with Heaven. Also at the hospital, Dean had an x-ray that confirmed the special markings etched onto their bones to repel demonic detection. Dean told Castiel he felt naked without his necklace, which held the amulet that detected God.

Castiel tried to warn the men that this could not be an ordinary Trickster, based on his intense powers. But, every time Cas located them, he was yanked away. They finally trapped Gabriel in a ring of holy fire and he admitted the truth. He also believed that fate was fate, and the sooner it all was said and done the better for all the angels who'd started the problem to begin with. Richard Speight Jr reprised his role as the Trickster/Gabriel.

Crowley wanted Bobby's soul to ensure that no one killed him during the fight.

In his weakened state, John Winchester allowed Michael to use his body to save Mary. While housed in his John suit, Michael told Dean exactly why Dean would allow Michael to use him (Dean) as his vessel. Then, he sent Sam, Dean and Castiel back to 2010. He also killed Anna and wiped Mary and John's memories of this event.

Dean figured out, based on a recent shooting star sighting, that the chaos in town was a piece of the apocalypse. The shooting star foretold the coming of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The one in town was to arrive on a red chariot and was named War. War literally had a red Ford Mustang parked in town, and Dean said if it were he, that would be the way he "rolled". The local priest seemed shocked beyond belief that they were indeed in the middle of the actual apocalypse. War revealed himself to both Sam and Dean, and attempted to get the people in town to kill them both. In the end, the Winchester men figured out that War was using a weird ring to control people, so they cut off his hand. Afterward, Sam admitted to Dean that he couldn't trust himself and that maybe they should part ways for a while. Dean agreed, and Sam left River Pass with someone else.

Dean had to agree to not interfere when Sam said "yes" to Lucifer and then would attempt to walk the angel into his cage. Dean reluctantly agreed, but later admitted he'd lied to Death. Julian Richings played Death. At this point Castiel had returned as completely human and could offer no supernatural aid to the fight. The ring was cut from the fingers of both Famine and Pestilence.

Being an angel, food was not something Cas had to worry about. But, apparently his vessel could still take in food. Becky knew that it was all true, so she told them that Bella had never given the Colt to Lilith at all, but to a demon named Crowley. She told them they needed to start back with Crowley. So, as much of a pain as she seemed, in the end she saw Chuck for the hero he was and offered the Winchesters a new path to look into in their pursuit to save the world.

Just as he had when he first needed a body, Lucifer came as a woman. The first time, he came as the dead wife to Nick, played by Mark Pellegrino. He seduced Nick verbally, playing on the pain and rage Nick felt about his wife's death. This time, he came to Sam as Jessica. Jessica died in the very first episode of the series, prompting Sam to join Dean in the search for John Winchester. Lucifer/Jessica told Sam that it was meant to be that Sam be his vessel. He/she explained that his body was the only one strong enough, just as Dean's was the only one strong enough to house Michael the archangel. Since Sam and Dean had parted ways, I am sure Lucifer wanted to take advantage of the moment. Adrianne Palicki, maybe better known for her role as Tyra on "Friday Night Lights", reprised her role as Jessica Moore.

An narrated by Chuck the Prophet (aka as Carver Edlund) in the finale, the Impala was the most important car in the whole universe. Chuck: "On April 21, 1967, the 100 millionth GM vehicle rolled off the line at the plant in Janesville--a blue two-door Caprice. There was a big ceremony, speeches, the lieutenant governor even showed up. Three days later, another car rolled off that same line. No one gave two craps about her. But they should have. because that 1967 Chevrolet Impala would turn out to be the most important car--no, the most important object--in pretty much the whole universe." It was the car, and all the memories Sam had tied to it, that allowed Sam to take control over Lucifer. He opened the portal to Lucifer's cage, and began walking him to it. Michael arrived, after having been sent away with holy fire by Cas, and tried to stop it from happening. Instead, Michael (in Adam's body) got close enough for Sam to yank him down into the hole as well.
