Nadiya and her sister Natalie were on "The Amazing Race" twice, one season of which aired just months before "Survivor: San Juan del Sur" was filmed. Dale said that the twins had back-stabbed other teams on the Race, thereby making them untrustworthy. Nadiya's comment about counting Josh (who was gay) as a girl was not taken well by Josh as he stated in one of his interviews. One of her most famous quotes on the show came at her only tribal council. She said that on "Survivor", she was making the best of the situation and she had to "make margaritas out of lemons" instead of lemonade.

In addition to the 'Blood vs. Water' twist, the teams dove into their first Reward Challenge right after splitting into tribes and it was there that they were told that for the double-tribe portion of the game, their Reward Challenges would specifically pit pairs against one another. Jeremy was chosen for the first of these which meant that he would go head-to-head against his wife, Val, in an effort to win Reward. The solo Reward Challenges would no longer be used after the merge as all castaways would be eligible. Immunity Challenges proceeded as normal.

Val had gone to Exile Island on day one, so she pretended that she had found a hidden immunity idol there and then found one at camp. She then said to John that she would play one of them and give the other to her alliance-mate, Jaclyn. John did not rule out that possibility (even though he later found an idol at camp), so the men split the vote, putting three on her and three on Baylor. Val and Jaclyn also voted for Baylor which would have sent her home, but Josh switched his vote from Baylor to Val in order to protect Baylor, whom he had an alliance with. Val (vainly) described her act as "an Oscar-winning performance".

Having prior knowledge of her cutthroat history on "The Amazing Race", Dale viewed her as a potential backstabber and rallied the other four men to vote her out. On the other hand, the four women targeted Dale simply because of his age, since it is often a major factor in tribal challenges. In the end, Baylor flipped on the women and voted with Dale, Wes, Alec, and John, while Josh cast a vote Baylor's way to throw off suspicion that he was working with either side, sending Nadiya home by a vote of 5-3-1.

Of course it couldn't be so simple. The winner of the Reward Challenges would send their opponent (typically their loved one) to Exile Island until the start of the next Immunity Challenge. The catch with this, however, was that they would not go alone. The winner would also choose one person from their own tribe to send to Exile Island. Both castaways sent to Exile Island would, as per tradition, have the opportunity to take an item from one of two vases which could contain a clue to a Hidden Immunity Idol at their camp. Exile Island continued after the merge though the clue to the idol would lead them to a spot at Exile Island specifically, and only one castaway would visit at a time.

When John and Julie played against each other in a reward challenge, Julie won, sending Jon as the loser and Jeremy as her pick, to go to the island. Once there, Jeremy picked the right urn with the immunity idol clue, but agreed to share information in return for John looking after his wife Val back in camp. John found the idol before returning to camp. At the next Tribal Council. Val was voted out as she had boasted she had two idols and the tribe wanted to flush at least one of them. As she had no idol for protection, she went home. At the next reward challenge, John apologised to Jeremy for not protecting his wife. Jeremy upset about his wife being voted out, outed not only John's identity but the offensive remarks John made when he was the Braves' pitcher about minority groups. At he immunity challenge, Natalie called on the other tribe to vote out John as he was a "racist and a bigot". John unwisely retorted to Natalie that if she "were a man, I would knock your teeth out". John paid for his volatility, being the next voted out. John went home with an immunity idol in his pocket.

As part of a brand new twist, this season would see the reward challenge as an opportunity to face off against a loved one. Before the challenge started, a quick game of rock-paper-scissors was played to determine which tribe would choose their representative. Jeremy volunteered for Hunahpu and as a result, he had to compete against his wife, Val. Jeremy won the duel and Val was forced to be sent to Exile Island. Jeremy also had to choose someone from his own tribe to join his wife and chose Keith to accompany her. John and Julie also squared off, but that wasn't until the next episode. Brothers Drew and Alec never faced off in a reward challenge, but had the opportunity to duke it out in a sumo-style immunity challenge. Reed didn't have to go against his boyfriend, Josh, since the tribal swap left no more eligible pairs of loved ones from opposing tribes to compete against each other. Instead, the tribes were instructed by Jeff to choose their strongest competitors, with Reed being chosen to represent Hunahpu and Baylor being chosen to represent Coyopa. Reed managed to outwit Baylor in a blind puzzle challenge and chose Natalie to be her traveling partner.

Jon and Jaclyn and Missy and Baylor were two of the three couples that ended up on Coyopa. Keith and Wes remained separated.

Julie was given the cold shoulder by the tribe. She disclosed to Missy that she was thinking of quitting. Missy implored her to stay but Julie realised that she only wanted her to stay to vote with the alliance. Julie spoke to Jeff about wanting to quit as she missed her boyfriend John. Jeff said if she wanted to quit it had to be now so, as she also realized that the next person voted off would be the first jury member so she wouldn't get to see John anyway, she quit. This meant Tribal Council would not eventuate and the Josh/Jeremy showdown would be delayed for another three days.

Kelley was also on Coyopa, but was reunited with her father, Dale; Natalie was without a loved one, but remained on Hunahpu, and John was eliminated from Coyopa before the swap, leaving Julie all alone on Hunahpu.

Day 16 saw the merge finally occur and the twelve remaining castaways were told to pack their things and bring them up to the headlands. There, Hunahpu and Coyopa united with their belongings and joined for the merge feast to celebrate this game milestone. They ultimately returned to the old Coyopa camp to live out the remainder of the game. Taking on aqua green buffs, they combined the old tribe names back at camp to create the merged name-- Huyopa.

Dale showed Jon a fake idol which he had found on the first day of the game. Before tribal council, he offered to give Jon the idol if he wasn't voted out. Jon believed the idol was real, but he, along with Jaclyn, Missy and Baylor, decided it was too risky to keep him as he would be an unknown factor at the merge.

Because of Hunahpu's lack of portion control before the tribe swap, they were quickly losing their rice supply and made a desperate plea to Jeff for his aid. He was willing to offer them enough rice to last them for the remainder of the game, but it required what he termed a "stiff penalty." This included handing over their comfort reward plus their hatchet, hammer, one of their pots and the extra flint they had previously acquired by giving up their fishing gear to replace their original flint that they thought was lost forever. Jeremy was not happy with this outcome, as he felt that they had a chance to win a more appetizing reward later.

Two days after the merge, after the first Individual Immunity Challenge (which was won by Keith), Julie hit her breaking point. After horrible weather in the week prior, an emotional breakdown due to her missing John, and a perceived scandal when the tribe found trail mix in her bag, she felt as though she were antagonized to the point where she needed to remove herself from the situation. Jeff visited her at the camp before the castaways went to their first merged Tribal Council and she threw in the towel, citing the overwhelming attitude towards her and the separation from John as reasons.

Answer: Two idols were played negating seven votes

There were nine votes. Reed, playing double agent had an alliance of four. He convinced the majority alliance of five (Missy, Baylor, Jon, Jacyn and Natalie) to split their votes between Wes and Keith, in case one of them played an idol. Reed's alliance of four would therefore blindside Jon. All was going to plan until Keith realised he was vulnerable and played an idol. Natalie then advised Jon to play his idol, which saved him. Jon received four votes which did not count, Keith received three votes which did not count leaving Wes with the only two allowable votes, being eliminated.

After most of the castaways quickly plowed through their personal share of leftovers they had gathered from the traditional merge feast, they made it their mission to look for any random crumbs of food that still remained from it. They suspected that someone was hoarding the trail mix and went through each other's bags. While Julie was away from the shelter area, her bag also got checked and after discovering the snack inside, the group stole some of it to show their disapproval of her apparent selfishness.

Hidden Immunity Idols were rampant throughout the season, but most went into play on Day 26. Keith, who searched for his Idol on Day 9, used his to negate three votes against him. Jon used his, found at Exile Island on Day 20, to negate another three against him. This ultimately got Wes sent to the jury with only two votes. It meant that the only Hidden Immunity Idol left in the game was the one in Natalie's possession (she found it on Day 25 and used it on Jaclyn on Day 37 to send Baylor to the jury). John Rocker located an Idol on Day 6 but never used it; he was blindsided instead. Jon located a second at Exile Island on Day 27 and, likewise, never used it.

Before Julie's quit, Jon and Jaclyn were set on voting out Jeremy (who led an alliance and was a threat). After the episode eight reward challenge, Jon was sent to Exile Island. Without Jon at camp, Jaclyn felt disrespected by the men in Josh's alliance, and said they only went to Jon to talk about strategy when in fact they made decisions together. When Jeremy won immunity, they switched sides and voted out Josh.

The alliance of five led by Jon decided to send Keith home as he was better than Alec at challenges but took out insurance by splitting the votes with Alec. Natalie "misunderstood" and voted for Alec, not Keith sending Alec home 3-2. Jon accepted this "mistake" as Natalie had earned trust form Jon by saving him (by telling him when to play his idol), and by taking Jon and Jaclyn with her when she won the reward challenge. This was a deliberate ploy on Natalie's part as part of a plan to get Jon voted out.

In an effort to start getting rid of "snakes" from his tribe, he singlehandedly lost for his tribe by purposely screwing up in the ring tossing portion of the challenge. Afterwards, he passionately proposed getting rid of Kelley, fearing that she had been playing smarter than she was letting on. The other four guys were not on board with this and decided to vote their own separate ways. Despite being one down on the men, the women took advantage of the men's disunity and went after Drew, who they considered a future threat in individual immunity challenges. Their plan was successful and with extra help from Jeremy, Drew was ousted by a 5-2-1-1 vote, Julie and Keith having received two and one respectively.

Part of "Survivor" is, undoubtedly, the social game. This season, Reward Challenges came back in a big way (while past seasons, especially ones with Redemption Island, nixed them for time). This season, there were no less than three challenges where individual reward wins were given up to other castaways. On Day 22, Natalie and Jeremy gave theirs to Jon and Jaclyn, respectively, trading it for their show of loyalty at the previous Tribal Council. It got Jeremy sent to Exile Island and, ultimately, eliminated at the next Tribal Council. On Day 25, Reed gave a "Survivor" ambassador reward to Missy, giving her her first Reward. Jon gave a reward to Baylor as well, on Day 33, giving her a spa day. Interestingly, the Reward Challenge on Day 27 was conceded to Missy at a certain point.

Answer: Jeremy became suspicious of Jon having an immunity idol

Jon had found a hidden immunity idol on Exile Island shortly after the merge. Jeremy went there after him and didn't find it, which led him to believe Jon had it. When he asked Jon about whether he had the idol, Jon lied and said he hadn't found it. Jon grew scared that Jeremy would expose him as having lied, and decided to get Jaclyn, Missy, Baylor and Reed (who was the original target and not in the alliance) to vote out Jeremy. Jeremy said he was weakened by his time on Exile, and that he could have won immunity if he was feeling better. The TV audience was also shocked, as very few hints were given before his exit.

Natalie had been trying to get rid of Jon since Jon blindsided her alliance partner Jeremy. In this episode she outlasted Jon in the immunity challenge. She convinced Baylor to be in on the plan and she counselled Keith to stay calm at Tribal Council and not to "run his mouth" and disclose the plan. Missy refused to vote out Jon though as she was "loyal to a fault". Everyone suspected Jon had an idol. Jaclyn was suspicious of Natalie's motives but Jon was unsuspecting. Jon's plan was to oust Keith who was the only person not in his alliance. Jon and Jaclyn voted for him, whereas Missy and Baylor voted for Jaclyn, wary of Jon's idol. Keith and Natalie voted for Jon resulting in a 2-2-2 tie. On the re-vote where Jon, Jaclyn and Keith could not vote, the vote was unanimous and for the second time in this game, a second "John" was sent home with an idol in his pocket.

Being a baseball fan, Wes suspected that he was John Rocker, a retired relief pitcher who played for the Atlanta Braves. John tried to throw him off his scent by lying about his last name, but Wes' determination to flush out the truth caused Rocker to eventually reveal his identity.

Going into the Final Tribal Council, this season saw a final three of Natalie, Jaclyn, and Missy needing to plead their case against a jury of eight on Day 39. Ultimately, the million dollar prize was given to Natalie, who cleverly manipulated her way through the game, especially post-merge, and racked up five votes to Jaclyn's two (from her partner, Jon, and Reed) and Missy's one (from her partner, Baylor). Natalie managed to do this with her own partner, her twin sister Nadiya, eliminated on Day 3 and without a single vote cast against her at all previous Tribal Councils.

A similar situation took place in "Survivor: The Australian Outback", the second season to air in the US. Unlike "San Juan del Sur", the wastefulness didn't become noticeable till the tribes were merged and the castaways couldn't have cared less if Jeff were willing to compensate. However, Jeff became concerned with the lack of energy and made a surprise visit to their campsite to offer them a bag of rice to last them till the end of the game. In addition, he threw some fish hooks into the loop. They took the offer and gave up their tarp plus a personal item of Colby's, being a Texas flag.

Following the reward challenge, Reed got into an argument with Missy, during which he said to Baylor that she was being a brat. This infuriated Missy, who gave him the finger when she left to go on reward. Although he, Alec and Keith tried to recruit Jaclyn while Jon was on Exile, Jon and Jaclyn ultimately decided not to switch sides. Reed said that he was angry at Jon and Jaclyn because they would not talk to each other the day of tribal council, having gotten into an argument themselves.

At the final seven, Jon was being targeted by Natalie and Baylor; however, he won immunity to save himself. When the alliance of five decided to split their votes between Keith and Alec in case one of them had a hidden idol, Natalie confided in Baylor that she was thinking of saving Keith. When she did save him, Jon and Missy were shocked. Natalie's reason for saving Keith was that she thought Keith could beat Jon, who was a bigger threat, at immunity challenges. In the following episode, Natalie passed her switched vote off as a mistake, which Jon and Missy believed.

When Natalie won immunity at the final six, Jon was her target as he had led the charge to vote out her good friend Jeremy. Jon had a hidden immunity idol, so she and Baylor decided to split the votes between him and Jaclyn. Missy was initially reluctant to go with the plan as she had a bond with Jon, but eventually went along. When Jon didn't play his idol, a three-way tie resulted in a re-vote in which Jon was voted out. On his way out, he forgot to bring his torch to Jeff.
