Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Season 29 featured ten couples with existing relationships (one couple had to drop out before filming commenced). The tribes were divided along "relationship lines"; each couple was sent to a different tribe. Did each couple get to spend anytime together before being divided into tribes?

Answer: Yes, each couple spent a night together before being assigned to a tribe

Each couple was marooned separately on the island for one night before assembling at Heroes Arena for team assignation. For the single night they were given only a flint to assist them. As such "Survivor" series 29 was only the second time the series had exceeded 39 days.
2. While the concept of Blood versus Water was retained from Season 27, there were quite a few differences. Which one of the following did *NOT* occur on this season of "Survivor"?

Answer: Redemption Island was in use before the merge

In Series 27, half the contestants were returning players who each bought a loved one. Redemption Island was used.
In the current series, Exile Island was used instead of Redemption Island. Instead of players being sent to the island to have another chance at fighting their way back into the game, being sent to Exile island, meant they were away from their tribe for two nights. All players were new, although Natalie and Nadiya had both appeared on "The Amazing Race" twice before in 2012 and 2014.
3. John was recognized as John Rocker (relief pitcher for the Atlanta Braves). What happened soon after?

Answer: After his identity was revealed he was the next person voted out

When John and Julie played against each other in a reward challenge, Julie won, sending Jon as the loser and Jeremy as her pick, to go to the island. Once there, Jeremy picked the right urn with the immunity idol clue, but agreed to share information in return for John looking after his wife Val back in camp. John found the idol before returning to camp.

At the next Tribal Council. Val was voted out as she had boasted she had two idols and the tribe wanted to flush at least one of them. As she had no idol for protection, she went home.

At the next reward challenge, John apologised to Jeremy for not protecting his wife. Jeremy upset about his wife being voted out, outed not only John's identity but the offensive remarks John made when he was the Braves' pitcher about minority groups.

At he immunity challenge, Natalie called on the other tribe to vote out John as he was a "racist and a bigot". John unwisely retorted to Natalie that if she "were a man, I would knock your teeth out". John paid for his volatility, being the next voted out. John went home with an immunity idol in his pocket.
4. After the first four rounds, the tribes were uneven, Coyopa losing three immunity challenges and Hunahpu winning three of the reward challenges. Instead of a reward challenge in episode five, there was a tribe swap. In the new Coyopa, there were now three couples but in new Hunahpu, there was only one. Which was the only couple left that remained in separate tribes?

Answer: Wes and Keith

There were five couples (out of nine) left in the game, leaving four singles. John and Reed were the only couple on Hunahpu. The other three couples in Coyopa were: Missy and Baylor; Jon and Jaclyn; and Dale and his daughter Kelley, the latter two not lasting much longer in the game, being the next two voted out.
Wes and Keith remained on different teams but had swapped tribes. The four singles were Natalie, Jeremy who stayed in Hanahpu, and Alec and Julie who joined them.
5. After the merge halfway through the series, there was the usual ceremonial feast. Some of the left over food was taken back to the camp. When some of the "Trail Mix" went missing, it was found in Julie's bag. What happened next?

Answer: Julie felt alienated and quit

Julie was given the cold shoulder by the tribe. She disclosed to Missy that she was thinking of quitting. Missy implored her to stay but Julie realised that she only wanted her to stay to vote with the alliance. Julie spoke to Jeff about wanting to quit as she missed her boyfriend John. Jeff said if she wanted to quit it had to be now so, as she also realized that the next person voted off would be the first jury member so she wouldn't get to see John anyway, she quit.

This meant Tribal Council would not eventuate and the Josh/Jeremy showdown would be delayed for another three days.
6. Soon after the merge it was clear there were two alliances: Jeremy had an alliance with Natalie, Missy, Baylor, whilst Josh led Reed, Wes, Keith and Alec with Jon, and Jacyln being a dual swing vote. Jaclyn convinced Jon to vote with Jeremy's alliance sending Josh to the Jury. Keith was the next contestant lined up to be voted out. Instead someone was blindsided on the next Tribal Council. Who?

Answer: Jeremy

When Josh was voted out, it was because Jon and Jaclyn voted for the alliance leader as Jaclyn claimed Wes and Keith had disrespected her when Jon was not around. On that basis Keith was the next contestant lined up to go especially when he did not win immunity (Baylor did).

However, Reed engineered a plan where Missy Bailor, Jon and Jaclyn all voted to blindside Jeremy with only Natalie and Jeremy voting for Keith (Wes, Keith and Alec voting for Reed).
7. Wes was voted out with only two votes. How was this possible?

Answer: Two idols were played negating seven votes

There were nine votes. Reed, playing double agent had an alliance of four. He convinced the majority alliance of five (Missy, Baylor, Jon, Jacyn and Natalie) to split their votes between Wes and Keith, in case one of them played an idol. Reed's alliance of four would therefore blindside Jon. All was going to plan until Keith realised he was vulnerable and played an idol. Natalie then advised Jon to play his idol, which saved him. Jon received four votes which did not count, Keith received three votes which did not count leaving Wes with the only two allowable votes, being eliminated.
8. Natalie never forgave Jon for blindsiding her alliance partner. However, she made made moves to facilitate Jon trusting her so when she made a decisive move against him, Jon thought she had made a mistake. What was the "mistake"?

Answer: She voted Alec out instead of Keith

The alliance of five led by Jon decided to send Keith home as he was better than Alec at challenges but took out insurance by splitting the votes with Alec. Natalie "misunderstood" and voted for Alec, not Keith sending Alec home 3-2. Jon accepted this "mistake" as Natalie had earned trust form Jon by saving him (by telling him when to play his idol), and by taking Jon and Jaclyn with her when she won the reward challenge.

This was a deliberate ploy on Natalie's part as part of a plan to get Jon voted out.
9. It doesn't pay to be complacent in "Survivor". With six contestants left in the game, who was voted out with an idol in their pocket and an admission at Tribal Council that they were thinking about their jury speech afforded to the top three?

Answer: Jon

Natalie had been trying to get rid of Jon since Jon blindsided her alliance partner Jeremy. In this episode she outlasted Jon in the immunity challenge. She convinced Baylor to be in on the plan and she counselled Keith to stay calm at Tribal Council and not to "run his mouth" and disclose the plan. Missy refused to vote out Jon though as she was "loyal to a fault". Everyone suspected Jon had an idol. Jaclyn was suspicious of Natalie's motives but Jon was unsuspecting. Jon's plan was to oust Keith who was the only person not in his alliance. Jon and Jaclyn voted for him, whereas Missy and Baylor voted for Jaclyn, wary of Jon's idol. Keith and Natalie voted for Jon resulting in a 2-2-2 tie. On the re-vote where Jon, Jaclyn and Keith could not vote, the vote was unanimous and for the second time in this game, a second "John" was sent home with an idol in his pocket.
10. The winner of this season's "Survivor" was no surprise as this person the most strategic, post-merge and pulled off some big moves. What was surprising was this person was able to do this, despite losing their relative who was the first person voted off. With a Jury vote of 5-2-1, which person won "Survivor San Juan del Sur: Blood vs. Water"?

Answer: Natalie

Natalie pulled some big moves in the last three episodes: She orchestrated the blindside of Jon; when Keith won the penultimate immunity challenge, she had to take out one of her own alliance, so played her idol for Jaclyn which then blindsided Baylor; then despite not winning the final immunity challenge (Jaclyn won her first), was able to convince Missy to vote out Keith. With Missy having a broken bone in her foot and unable to compete in most of the challenges, and Jaclyn being carried on Jon's coattails for most of the game (winning the ultimate immunity challenge was her only real contribution), Natalie was the only real choice. Given that the Jury voting gave automatic votes to loved ones, Natalie received five out of the six votes remaining, Reed voting for Jaclyn. Natalie had out-lasted, out-witted and outplayed 17 other players to be crowned Survivor.
