At the end of season 5, Raylan committed to staying in Kentucky just long enough to take down Boyd Crowder. After doing so, he planned to move to Florida to be with Winona and his baby daughter. As season 6 began, he had a confidential informant in place with Boyd Crowder.

When Raylan said he may shoot to stop Boyd, Boyd said, "I'm gonna bet my life on you being the only friend I have left in this world."

Around these parts, this star means something."

This set up the first clues to one of the main mysteries of the season. After telling Raylan he knew nothing about the license, Arlo proceeded to kill a fellow prisoner who heard about it.

Then, Dewey fell down a hill and knocked himself out. He eventually caught up with Wade, but lost him again. By the time he and Daryl found Wade again, the informant's body had already been found by Raylan.

Boyd still managed to get to Dickie, and Dickie told him the money was with Ellstin Limehouse.

This family drama occurred toward the beginning of the episode. Helen kicked Raylan's father Arlo out of the house when she found out he had betrayed his son. Since he was under house arrest, this became Raylan's problem. Raylan told Arlo he could get the monitor off his leg if he returned the $20,000 he took from the Marshal Service during the sting. Arlo claimed he gave the money to Bo. At Raylan's urging, Helen let Arlo back in the house.

His actions spurred Katherine and Wynn to try to steal the money he was using for purchases. They hired Boyd Crowder for the job. Crowder, of course, started working his own angle. This pulled Raylan in, since he was working to arrest Boyd.

At the very end of "Shot All to Hell", Raylan admitted to Art that he had told Sammy Tonin that Augustine would be at the airstrip, and he himself was there when Sammy had Nicky killed. While Art knew that Nicky was trying to kill Raylan's pregnant ex-wife Winona, he could not forgive Raylan for stepping outside the law to stop Nicky. At the beginning of "Kill the Messenger", Art punched Raylan. No explanation was necessary. The rift between Raylan and his boss lasted for most of the rest of the season.

Played by Walton Goggins, there was something likeable about him, even when he was doing horrible things. While Raylan did not admit it, the viewer was also given the impression that the lead character liked him, as well. Part of this impression was formed after Raylan shot him, but did not kill him.

By the time Boyd and Picker came back with several other men, Rachel and Drew were already out of Harlan, on a train. The marshals had won the race to get Drew.

In "Harlan Roulette", Raylan warned Wynn Duffy to get out of town. He did so by taking a bullet out of his gun and dropping it on Wynn's body, and then telling him that the next bullet would be "coming a little faster." Wynn saved the bullet and Robert Quarles used it to kill Gary. When questioned about this in "Watching the Detectives", Raylan told the homicide detectives that he had heard about someone doing that on Johnny Carson years go.

Art said this to Raylan after a very funny exchange during which he tried to guess who Ralan was seeing. Art started asking whether he should be concerned about Tim after Tim shot someone and since "he's a little off and you're always a little off". Raylan slipped up and revealed he had been out with someone and Art amused himself by trying to guess who Raylan was seeing and keeping a secret. He guessed Rachel first, then dismissed the idea of Ava, then asked if Raylan had roofied him, and finally realized it was Raylan's ex-wife, the still-married Winona. In between his laughter, this quote was his response.
