The circumstances surrounding the initial meeting of Doug and Deacon were revealed in a flashback sequence in episode #3 during the eighth season, "Consummate Professional". In that episode, Doug was unemployed during the beginning of his romance with Carrie. After a date, Doug wanted to advance his physical relationship with Carrie to the next level, but Carrie was reluctant because Doug had no job or clear prospects for the future. To get to the next stage, Doug lied to Carrie and told her that he did in fact have a job. As Doug left Carrie's apartment the next day, he noticed that she was following him in her car, obviously to see where he was going to work. Doug quickly ducking into one of the first places he saw, which was the IPS garage, where he first saw Deacon preparing for his work shift. Doug asked Deacon if he could borrow on of his IPS uniform shirts (to prove to Carrie that he worked for IPS) to which Deacon replied, "Do I know you?". When Deacon stepped away, Doug took a shirt from his locker and put it on just as Carrie entered the garage. Deacon returned to find Carrie questioning Doug about whether or not he worked for IPS. Sensing Carries overly demanding nature, when Carrie asked Deacon if Doug worked there, Deacon covered for Doug, by saying that Doug was an IPS employee. With this started the friendship of the two men.
