Emmett was at the science expo, where he had snuck down early to avoid his fathers ire. He was worried that his dad would be upset that he was about to make a public science display. His father wanted him to become a lawyer and judge like he had done.

Edna, as players found out in the third episode of the game, was controlling Hill Valley through her husband. Marty spent time convincing Doc Brown of this but before they could escape Marty, Doc and Jennifer were all taken into custody. Edna planned to punish Marty and Jennifer, and reprogram the mind of Doc.
