Arcade Games Mixture Trivia Questions

1. There was a game released in 1981 that was unusual in that it did not include shooting or killing as the object of the game, the object was to just cross a road and avoid being run over or eaten. What was the name of this game?

From Quiz
Welcome to the '80s Arcade

Answer: Frogger

"Frogger" was released in 1981 by Konami and its object was to get a frog across a busy street without getting run over, then cross a river without getting eaten by an alligator, snake or otter. Once you get five frogs safely home you progress to the next level. You could also catch bugs or escort a lady frog across the screen for bonus points. A "Frogger" cartoon played on Saturday mornings for one season.

2. Which game am I? Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde Ghostly enemies, there's nowhere to hide I eat all my fruit I could not wear a suit I've no legs nor arms, my mouth is wide.

From Quiz A Fistful of Quarters

Answer: Pac-Man

"Pac-Man" was developed by Namco and released in 1980. One of the most iconic games of all time, it is also one of the highest grossing games of all time. The ghostly enemies in the game are named Inky (blue), Pinky (pink), Blinky (red) and Clyde (orange). Each has a distinctly different "personality" in the game. A "perfect" score in "Pac-Man" is considered to be 3,333,360 points on level 255. After this the game crashes. The first player to achieve this, according to the Guinness Book of Records, is Billy Mitchell. In 1999, it took him five and a half hours.

3. In what game did you play as a yellow character who ate white pellets (dots) in a maze?

From Quiz Classic Arcade Video Games

Answer: Pac-man

"Pac-man" was released by Namco in 1980. Believe it or not, "Pac-man" was actually inspired by pizza! This game was also released for the Atari 2600 (the first Atari). This version was received quite negatively because people thought it did not look anything like the arcade version.

4. The video game series "Mr. Driller" is a direct descendant of which 1980s arcade game whose title character was named Taizou Hori or Taizo Hori when he appeared in other Namco games and featured creatures called Pookas and Fygars?

From Quiz Don't You Remember?

Answer: Dig Dug

"Dig Dug" was originally released in 1982 by the Japanese company Namco and released outside of Japan by Atari. In the original the character was called Dig Dug but later incarnations revealed his name to be Taizou Hori or Taizo Hori. It is written in Japanese as Hori Taizo, which is a pun on the phrase "Horitai zo" and means "I want to dig". Taizo Hori is the father of Susumu Hori, the main character in the "Mr. Driller" series. "Mr. Driller" started out as "Dig Dug 3" but then developed into its own series and has been released on PlayStation, Dreamcast, WonderSwan, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, DS, WiiWare, Xbox Live, Windows, and iOS. Pookas also appeared in other Namco games, including the "Pac-Man World" series.

5. In this adventure game you portrayed Robin Hood. Facing the risk of several bizarre deaths, your goal was to charm and marry Maid Marion. Your honeymoon was the grand finale. Which is the game in question?

From Quiz Old Adventures In Lo-Fi

Answer: Sherwood Forest

"Sherwood Forest" by Dale Johnson and Dav Holle was released by Phoenix Software in 1982 (release dates stated throughout this quiz are relevant to the Apple II platform). It can be found in the list of top 10 adventure games in many game rating sites. It had fine graphics, a smart verb-noun parser for your text commands and a splendid logical chain leading to the solution. I am not sure why they used the name Marion rather than Marian, but you also got to meet Friar Tuck, Little John, the Sheriff and the Merry Men along your way.

6. What game, played in a maze requires the player (humanoid), to enter the maze and exit at a different opening of the field of play and avoid being vaporized by a robot's laser fire, touching a wall and "Evil Otto"?

From Quiz Classic Arcade Games (1979-1984)

Answer: Berzerk

The best-remembered feature of "Berzerk" is the talking robots, saying phrases like, "Intruder alert! Intruder alert!" and "Got the Humanoid, got the intruder". The function of "Evil Otto", the bouncing smiley face, is to quicken the pace of the game.

7. This game stands out as being the first to be designed by a woman. What is the name of this game?

8. Step into the cockpit, slap it into first gear, and step on the gas. Never mind that your car is a piece of plastic stuck on the screen--just don't hit the pylons flying past you at ever-increasing speeds. What game are you playing?

From Quiz Vidiot--A Look at Classic Arcade Games

Answer: Night Driver

An amazingly good game considering how technologically limited it was. "Sprint" was another great one of the early age of video games, an overhead track with cars flying around it (and occasionally taking shortcuts). "Death Race" was every driver's fantasy in game form--kill all the pedestrians. Of course, "Speed Racer" was a cartoon.

9. Which pioneering video/arcade game company began by making traditional playing cards called 'hanafunda' with flowers on them?

From Quiz Pioneers of the Old Arcade and Video Games

Answer: Nintendo

Nintendo Koppai was founded in Kyoto in 1889. The history of hanafunda allegedly goes way back to the Spanish missionaries who probably introduced the game. Each card represents a different season or flower. Nintendo directors visited the US Playing Card Company in the fifties and realized the limitations to the playing card business. They decided to diversify. One of the projects that did not work was a 'love hotel' where strangers in the night could exchange glances briefly. Those of you who have seen Mahjong tiles will see the similarity in motif.

10. In this classic game, insects of all sorts, from spiders to scorpions to fleas, come raining down on the player whose object is to destroy all that lies within his/her firing range. What is the title of this 1980 game from Atari?

From Quiz Classic Video Games

Answer: Centipede

'Centipede' was so vastly popular that a follow-up game, namely 'Millipede', was created in 1982. Both games were created by Atari.

11. In what classic game would you hear the main boss villain taunt you with such phrases as: "Run, coward!" and "I hunger!"?

From Quiz ZAP! Classic Video Games

Answer: 'Sinistar'

In the game you flew a little ship around trying to mine crystals from an asteroid belt to make "Sinibombs", the only weapon effective against the boss, Sinistar. If his drones were able to construct Sinistar out of the crystals (they would steal them and run away) before you had enough bombs to handle him, you were usually toast.

12. What was the first coin-operated video game?

From Quiz Classic Coin-Op Videogames

Answer: Computer Space

Computer Space was designed by Nolan Bushnell and released in 1971 by Nutting Associates. Bushnell went on to found Atari.

13. Which game featured an orange character hopping on a pyramid of cubes?

From Quiz Welcome to the '80s Arcade

Answer: Q*Bert

"Q*Bert" designed by Gottlieb and released in 1982 features an orange armless character that hops on a pyramid of cubes. The object is to change the color of the cubes by landing on them. Once they have all been changed, you progress to the next level. As you progress, enemies are introduced that will chase you down and kill you or even change color of the cubes.

14. Which arcade game is this? In a triangle ship I sit Each target I shoot does split When the saucer comes flying To hit it I'm trying We must thank Atari for it.

From Quiz A Fistful of Quarters

In 2010, over a period of 58 hours, John McAllister set a record of 41,338,740 in an Internet livestream. He beat the previous record set in 1982 by Scott Safran. Universal Studios obtained the rights to adapt the game into a film in 2009.

16. In which textual adventure game your task was to roam spooky surroundings in order to resurrect Count Cristo?

From Quiz Old Adventures In Lo-Fi

Answer: Voodoo Castle

No quiz on adventure games would be complete without mentioning a contribution from the prolific Scott Adams. "Voodoo Castle" (1980) was released by his company Adventure International and was also credited to the name of his wife Alexis. Other classic adventure games by Adams were "Adventureland", "The Count", "Mystery Fun House" and "Pyramid Of Doom".

17. What classic required the player to jump from cube to cube to change the colors of the blocks while avoiding Coily, Ugg, Slick, Sam, and Wrongway?

From Quiz Classic Arcade Games (1979-1984)

Answer: Q-Bert

Later rounds in "Q-Bert" become more challenging: cubes have to be touched twice and change back to the wrong color if they get hopped on again. A port of this game is available as a download from the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3.

18. What is the name of the game where you battle tanks, missles and the occasional saucer by looking through a periscope and controlling two joysticks to maneuver and shoot?

20. What classic Atari coin-op used vector graphics to create a 3D environment in which you drove a tank and tried to destroy other Tanks, Supertanks, Missiles, and Saucers?

From Quiz ZAP! Classic Video Games

Answer: 'Battlezone'

This was a game that was truly before its time, made at a point when 3D environments were few and far between. It was particularly well implemented, and worth the quarter.

21. Who was the primary founder of Atari?

From Quiz Classic Coin-Op Videogames

Answer: Nolan Bushnell

Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney founded Atari.

22. If I am using a rollerball as a controller to try to fight off insects, which game am I playing?

From Quiz Welcome to the '80s Arcade

Answer: Centipede

"Centipede" was released in 1981 by Atari. In it you use a rollerball to move and shoot at a centipede making its way through a field of mushrooms. As the centipede makes its way from the top of the screen the object is to shoot it with a laser. If you shoot it in the middle, it splits into two centipedes and they both continue down. The object is to shoot it in the head before it gets to the bottom of the screen.

23. Which game is this? Throwing flaming barrels, an ape Jumps atop the platform landscape If I could grab the hammer I could deliver a slammer Save Pauline and escape.

From Quiz A Fistful of Quarters

Answer: Donkey Kong
