Video Games Mixture Trivia Questions

1. Which game, developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), requires the protagonists to rescue Princess Toadstool (among others) from the clutches of the evil Bowser?

From Quiz
Camera, Action... Video Game!

Answer: Super Mario Brothers 3

"Super Mario Brothers 3" was released in Japan in 1988 and in North America in 1990. It is a two-dimensional, side-scrolling platform game where players play as either Mario or Luigi. Game play was similar to the previous versions with some new additions including sliding down slopes, throwing blocks, and climbing vines. There are eight kingdoms divided into multiple levels. This question was written by Phoenix Rising member tazman6619 who never played any "Mario" Brothers games but has fond memories of "Donkey Kong".

2. In whose series of games would you be able to wag the Wii Remote, position it like an elephant trunk, or hold it like a samurai sword to complete 'microgames'?

From Quiz Video Game Master Series #6

Answer: Wario

"WarioWare" first started showing up on Nintendo systems as far back as 2003, but the first console title showed up on the Wii as "WarioWare: Smooth Moves". All of the games have the same idea: you complete microgames-- games that take next to no time to complete-- in an effort to overcome an objective or beat friends. In the case of "Smooth Moves", you use the Wii Remote's motion-sensitive capabilities to complete games in five seconds. All of the styles of play are outlined in the game and are indicated by unique 'Forms'.

3. Dating as far back as "Brood War", what PC game's competitive scene grew immensely in popularity in South Korea during the early 2000s?

From Quiz Everything eSports

Answer: StarCraft

Although the rest of the world took more notice at the end of the decade, South Korea created a template on which eSports could operate with its widespread adoption of "StarCraft", the futuristic Blizzard real-time strategy game in which players could operate as one of three factions, mine resources, build units, and go to war. "Brood War", the game's first expansion, enhanced the gaming experience, but the whole venture wasn't without its problems, notably internal match fixing. That said, the community continued well into the 2010s (especially with the introduction of "StarCraft II") to form healthy communities of loyal fans and players around the world. "StarCraft" continued to find modest audiences well beyond the general lifespan of an online game and, interestingly, continued coverage.

4. Character naming in video games is everything. Don't be shocked but what was the original name of "Pac-Man" when it was first released in Japan in 1980?

From Quiz Billion $$ Video Game Characters: Humble Origins

Answer: Puck-man

Japanese company Namco started making arcade games consoles in the late 70s. Software engineers were employed to develop video games to compete with market leader Atari. "Pac-Man" was one of the first games they developed based on the concept of eating. Japanese onomatopoeic phrase "paku-paku" is the sound of eating, the closest English equivalent is the word "chomp". The Pac-Man character has always looked like a pizza with a missing slice but the developers later admitted that the design was also influenced from rounding out the Japanese character for mouth "kuchi" (which looked like a square). To attract girls to this video game, the developers added a maze and enemy ghosts. The eating concept was inspired by the character Popeye who gained power by eating. The finished game was called "Puckman" as the designers thought this would suit the intended American market, as the character design also resembled a hockey puck. However before the American release, the design team realised the arcade game consoles could be easily vandalised and the "P" could be turned into an "F". The name was changed to "Pac-Man" and after the initial American release the "Pac-Man" name was adopted globally.

5. In 2012, which PC MMORPG was released by ArenaNet and was a sequel to a series of games released between 2005 and 2007?

From Quiz Wasted Hours

Answer: Guild Wars 2

MMORPGs, by their very nature, are designed to keep people playing over a long period of time. The juggernaut that is "World of Warcraft" was released in 2004 and released its seventh expansion in 2018, with millions of active players across the world. For my tastes, my go-to MMO has been "Guild Wars", and I have spent a considerable amount of time in the world of Tyria since I first joined in 2006. In 2012, when "Guild Wars 2" released, I dove head-first into it, excited to explore a familiar world with significant gameplay changes, improved visuals and an ambitious overarching narrative. Players create a character by choosing one of five races (human, norn, charr, asura, or sylvari) and one of eight professions (nine with the "Heart of Thorns" expansion) which determines their skills. After that, it's a journey across the land to learn about the Elder Dragons and figure out how to stop their destruction.

6. What 1984 NES game was themed around motocross racing?

From Quiz First and Last Letter is the Same - Video Games

Answer: Excitebike

"Excitebike", releasing as a launch title for the NES console in Japan in 1984 before hitting the U.S. in 1985, became a bit of a beloved title for the Nintendo library, appearing time and time again with no real provocation as the generations plodded on. Making an appearance on the Nintendo 64 (as "Excitebike 64") and then evolving into "Excite Truck" for the Wii, it became apparent that the series could take on nearly any form as long as it incorporated down-and-dirty racing.

7. Finish the title: "Spyro the...?"

From Quiz Finish the Video Game Title

Answer: Dragon

Spyro the Dragon first started appearing in his own platforming games back on the PlayStation in 1998, becoming one of the go-to franchises for new gamers in Sony's pocket. After Insomniac Games went on to bigger and better things (in the "Ratchet & Clank" and "Resistance" series), the series saw some tepid releases before Spyro made his way to the "Skylanders" gaming figurine series.

8. In which mission from 'Sniper Elite 3' DLC you get a chance to kill Hitler?

From Quiz A Gaming Mix-Up

Answer: Hunt the Gray Wolf

Actually this a DLC for game but offers a nice mission where you hunt for Hitler and find many ways to kill him or spare.

9. Pressing START, then pressing SELECT on your SNES controller can allow you to back out of the level in what game?

From Quiz And Then You Press START

Answer: Donkey Kong Country

Like with most platformer games on the SNES console, the START+SELECT option is a failsafe for anyone who's taken on a bit more than they want to or for anyone who's fallen into the wrong level. In "Donkey Kong Country", like many other games in the genre, this can only be done if the player has already completed a run-through of the level once before. In other words, you should already be able to accomplish what you're trying to quit. On the plus side, you can also use this method to collect something midway through a level, back out, and avoid completing the rest while retaining the item.

10. Is "Frogger" a video game?

From Quiz Five Answers, Five Questions

Answer: Yes, it is a classic game first made by Sega

"Frogger" is considered a classic arcade video game. It was first made for, and distributed by, Sega in 1981. By 2005, more than twenty million copies had been sold worldwide.

12. "Dead Rising 3" was released on November 22nd, 2013 as an Xbox One Exclusive. What's the name of the game's protagonist?

From Quiz Small Consolation 7: Console Video Games

Answer: Nick Ramos

"Dead Rising 3" was refused a rating by Germany's rating board and not released there, but was popular in the rest of Europe and America.

13. What area was the original "Assassin's Creed" game, for the Xbox 360, set in?

From Quiz Small Consolation 5: Console Video Games

Answer: The Holy Land

The correct answer is the Holy Land, although all of the other locations listed above have cropped up in sequels to the original game. Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus are all explorable in the first title, which was released in 2007 by Ubisoft.

14. One hero shocked gamers who completed their game in under five hours by removing their armour to reveal that they were, in fact, a woman! Who was it?

From Quiz Small Consolation 4: Console Video Games

Answer: Samus Aran ("Metroid")

The answer is Samus Aran of "Metroid". Even referred to as "he" in the game's instruction booklet, the revelation that Samus was female was a bold move by Nintendo back in 1986. Some might feel that a space mercenary character would be a rare example in gaming of a woman who wasn't overly sexualised, except that she was then represented in a pixelated bikini. Squall Leonheart is almost definitely a guy, as well.

15. What is the name of the primary protagonist of the "God of War" series for the Playstation 2 and 3?

From Quiz Small Consolation 3: Console Video Games

Answer: Kratos

Kratos is a spartan warrior and demi-god who is often seen as something of an anti-hero. He was tricked into killing his wife and daughter by Ares, and has sworn himself to vengeance, with each game forming a chapter in his revenge tale. He also popped up as a downloadable character in "Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds".

16. In "Super Mario Bros. 3", Bowser attempts to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom with the help of his children, the koopalings. How many koopalings were there?

From Quiz Small Consolation 2: Console Video Games

Answer: Seven

"Super Mario Bros. 3", originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is one of the most popular and influential titles ever created. There are seven Koopalings; Larry Koopa, Morton Koopa Jr, Wendy O. Koopa, Iggy Koopa, Roy Koopa, Lemmy Koopa and Ludwig von Koopa. Apparently Bowser was a big music fan, they're all named after famous musicians!

17. The brave Sir Arthur will fight all sorts of monsters in order to rescue his princess, even if he must do so showing his underwear! In which video game series can we find this gallant hero?

From Quiz Totally Random Video Game Mix

Answer: "Ghosts 'n Goblins"

First released in the arcades in 1985, this challenging game had an armored knight that could only take two hits before losing a life which probably forced you to start the level at the very beginning. The first hit he endured would cause him to reveal his boxers. He appears in "Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds" as a selectable fighter, and as a nod to the fans, he randomly displays his colorful underwear throughout the fights.

From Quiz The Adventures of Blinky, Mario and Sue

19. Which 2009 game allows players to choose between being heroic or villainous with the protagonist Cole MacGrath's newly-acquired electrical powers?

From Quiz Go Your Own Way

Answer: InFamous

Once a humble courier in Empire City, Cole MacGrath was at the heart of a destructive Ray Sphere explosion which cut off Empire City from the rest of America and imbued him with the power to manipulate and control electricity. While he is given many opportunities throughout the game to use his powers for good or evil, he ultimately has to do battle with the mastermind behind the Ray Sphere project. Karma plays a central role in 'InFamous', with Cole able to perform many actions which affect his reputation and how the citizens of Empire City view him. Good actions like healing pedestrians and saving people from enemies award good karma, while going on destructive rampages with little concern for others will earn bad karma.

20. A French game by an independent developer. Involves ghosts, baseball, and purification. What is the name of the game?

21. So much for being Super Effective. My Pokemon is Pikachu and I'm facing off against an Onix. Which is the only technique I could use to have an effect on the opponent?

From Quiz Problems

Answer: Tail Whip

Well, so much for that. Pikachu, primarily, is an electric-type Pokemon and most players (especially those with "Pokemon Yellow") know that Pikachu's electric attacks won't affect a ground-type Pokemon. Onix is the ground/rock-type Pokemon-- electric attacks will not work. Thus, the only move to make a difference is Tail Whip-- it lowers the opposing enemy's defense stat in battle, making your hits do more damage. Unfortunately, it won't take long before this Pikachu takes a rock attack and I need to bring out another Pokemon. Water and grass types are super effective against rock Pokemon.
