Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which currency was used to buy fashion in the 'Fashion Capital', Paris, France prior to the Euro?

Answer: French Franc

You could get roughly 5FF to 1Euro, although this did fluctuate.
2. Until the introduction of the euro, what would you have paid with in Portugal?

Answer: Escudos

Portugal is located on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula. In Portugal they speak Portugese, a Romance language closely related to Spanish.
3. How about buying a trip between Ios and Paxos (in Greece) before the Euro?

Answer: Drachma

The peseta was the Spanish currency, the lira the Italian currency, and dollars are used in a range of countries including New Zealand, Fiji, Australia, Canada, much of the Carribean and of course the USA.
4. Although this independent state is not part of the EU, it nonetheless uses the Euro. Which is it?

Answer: San Marino

San Marino is the third smallest state in Europe, after the Vatican (Holy See) and Monaco. San Marino claims to be the world's oldest republic, having been formed in 301AD. It is located in central Italy. (This information comes from www.cia.gov). Liechtenstein uses the Swiss Franc. Malta and Cyprus are members of the EU (and use the Euro).
5. Italy is my favourite country in the whole world, having been lucky enough to live there for 2 years. What would you have used to buy gold, silver, leather, and stunning clothes before 2002?

Answer: Lire

Lire were great, because 1,000 Italian lire = $NZ1.00 approximately (I think that's about $US0.50 and it's about £0.30), so you felt well rich!) Incidentally, the singular of 'lire' is 'lira' ...
6. If you wanted to buy clogs and cheese in Amsterdam (the Netherlands), what would you have used before the introduction of the Euro?

Answer: Guilders

Holland is famous for a) being flat; b) clogs; c) cheese; d) really, really good-looking (tall) people; e) canals and bikes; and f) various forbidden pleasures best not mentioned on a family site!
7. If you wanted to go up to Finland, which currency would you have taken before the Euro?

Answer: Markkas

Finland was part of the Russian Empire until 1809, when it became independent but was still ruled (until 1917) by the Russian Tsar.
It is now commonly thought of as part of Scandinavia and is a member of the EU. The Finnish mark was the currency from 1860 until 2002.
8. Until 2002, what currency would you have needed to buy some Lladro porcelain in Barcelona (Spain)?

Answer: Pesetas

Until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro, the peseta was the currency in Spain. Some of the coins used to come with holes in the middle of them.
9. If you had gone to Ireland (Eire, not Northern Ireland) before the introduction of the Euro, what currency would you have needed there?

Answer: Punts

Although Northern Ireland used (and, being a part of the UK, continues to use) the pound sterling, Eire used punts which were slightly less in monetary value than the pound. Scotland (and Northern Ireland) have their own regional banknotes, but the currency is the same as in the rest of the United Kingdom and is controlled by the Bank of England.
10. What currency did Germany use immediately before changing to the Euro?

Answer: Deutsche Mark

Prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, East and West Germany used different currencies, called the Deutsche Mark (West Germany) and simply the Mark (East Germany). 1 DM West equalled approximately 4 DM East. When the country was unified the Deutsche Mark became the common currency, and Germany now uses the Euro. (The Reichsmark was the currency prior to the currency reform of 1948).
