Missing Treasure Trivia Questions

1. In which sea was what is widely thought to be the oldest discovered shipwreck found?

From Quiz
Shipwrecks and Sunken Treasures

Answer: Mediterranean

In 1982, a Turkish sponge diver, Mehemet Cakir, reported spotting "metal biscuits with ears" on the seabed off Uluburun on the south coast of Turkey. These turned out to be Bronze Age copper ingots with handles at the corners, of the type used at the time. Included in the cargo were also tin ingots, amphorae, jars, jewelry and goods from many lands, showing the far reaches of trade in the Mediterranean at that epoch. It was estimated that the wreck was 3,300 years old and had sailed around 1,200 B.C.

2. The year is 1864, during the American Civil War. On board a Confederate blockade runner called the 'Fannie and Jennie' is a golden, jewel-studded sword. Who is this sword intended for?

From Quiz Seek the Treasure

Answer: Robert E. Lee

The sword has an inscription on the blade: "To General Robert E. Lee, from his British sympathizers." However, the General never received this gift, because the 'Fannie and Jennie' was burned by the Union Navy before it reached its destination. All hands were saved, except for the Captain and his purser. The existence of the golden sword was confirmed by both the captured Confederate sailors, and the Union commander who took the ship - Peirce Crosby. Interestingly, Commander Crosby only reported that the sword was on the ship, not that it had been recovered. There is some confusion as to what happened to General Lee's sword. The most popular theory is that it lies on the ocean floor with what remains of the 'Fannie and Jennie', near Masonboro Inlet, North Carolina.

3. Captain Kidd, legendary pirate, is often mentioned in connection with the treasure. Whatever happened to him?

From Quiz Oak Island Treasure Mystery #2

Answer: He was hanged

Kidd was originally charged with the task of stamping out piracy. Later, however, his purpose got "altered". He was imprisoned, hanged -and put on display (as a warning to others). While his pirate sailings place him in the approximate vicinity of Oak Island, it is hard to say with certainty that he was ever there. Be that as it may, buried pirate treasure is a possibility.

4. Where is Oak Island?

From Quiz Oak Island Treasure Mystery #1

Answer: Off the coast of Eastern Canada

It's a small island in the general vicinity of Nova Scotia.

7. Where did the treasure Spanish ship Atocha sink?

From Quiz Shipwrecks and Sunken Treasures

Answer: The Marquesas Keys

In 1622, the Atocha was part of a treasure fleet transporting gold treasure from South America to Spain. Of the 28 ships in the fleet, eight were lost, among them the Atocha. In 1985, Mel Fisher, a treasure salvor, found the wreck after a 16-year search, during which three divers died, including his son Dirk. The wreck contained an estimated $400 million in silver, gold and precious stones.

8. Another theory suggests that the treasure may consist of Aztec or Inca gold. What explorers plundered this treasure?

From Quiz Oak Island Treasure Mystery #2

Answer: Spanish

From Quiz Morgan's Treasure Of Old Providence

Answer: Edward and Eliza Seward

The brig had cleared Pedro Bank and were headed for Honduras when they were caught in a severe hurricane. After several days of floating helplessly, the breakers of Old Providence Island were spotted. The Sewards refused to leave the ship because the waves were so severe. The Captain and crew took to the lifeboats, which were swamped by tremendous waves. The Captain, along with his crew, were all drowned in the stormy sea.

11. The Mary Rose was the favorite ship of which king?

From Quiz Shipwrecks and Sunken Treasures

Answer: Henry VIII

The Mary Rose was England's pride at the time. On July 19, 1545, Henry VIII witnessed its sinking from South Sea Castle, during a battle with the French. It is believed that it might have sunk because it was overloaded with cannons and poorly balanced. Most of the 700 aboard died. In 1982, it was finally dug out of the mud. It did not contain gold, but a treasure trove of artifacts, bows, arrows, and personal items of the crew. The remains of the hull are being conserved and are on display at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

12. Not all treasure is silver and gold. In 1939, the Nazis looted the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow, Poland. Several paintings were confiscated and later recovered, but what masterpiece remained missing until August 2012?

From Quiz Seek the Treasure

Answer: 'Portrait of a Young Man' by Raphael

In 1940, the painting ended up with Hans Frank, the Nazi-appointed governor of Poland. Frank left his residence in Krakow five years later, and it is believed he took the Raphael with him. Frank was arrested in May of 1945. Two other paintings he had confiscated were in his new residence in Bavaria - Rembrandt's 'Landscape with Good Samaritan' and da Vinci's 'Lady with an Ermine.' However, the Raphael had disappeared. Frank refused to divulge its location. He was eventually hung for crimes against humanity. One theory is that Frank had given the painting to a man named Wilhelm de Palisieux, but this has not been proven. Then, in August 2012, the painting was reported to have been found in a bank vault.

The Romanov palaces were raided during the Bolshevik Revolution, and it is possible that these missing eggs ended up with the rest of the valuables in the Kremlin Armoury, at least for a time. Joseph Stalin had some of the armoury treasures sold in the 1920's and 30's. The Empire Nephrite was made of nephrite (jade) and featured a medallion portrait of Czar Nicolas' father, Alexander III. The Czar gave the egg to his mother as an Easter present.

21. Off of the coast of which American state is the treasure ship "Santa Maria Del Camino" believed to lie, waiting to be discovered?

From Quiz Whereabouts Unknown

Answer: Florida

In 1555, the Santa Maria Del Camino set sail for Panama in order to pick up a large treasure from South America. She picked up 1.8 millon pesos in gold and silver while in Panama and then sailed for Cartagena, Columbia. After picking up and additional load of gold, emeralds and pearls she set sail for Spain. A hurricane drove the ship ashore and tore it to pieces near St. Lucie Inlet, located on the east coast of Florida. Local natives massacred most of the survivors, but did keep a few of the younger ones alive as slaves. This is just one of the many treasure ships believed to lie of the coast of Florida that are laden with silver and gold. Gold and silver coins do occasionally wash up on Florida beaches, and the state is an extremely popular destination for treasure hunters.

22. King John of England (reigned 1199-1216) lost the Crown Jewels days before he died of illness. How did he lose them?

From Quiz Seek the Treasure

Answer: Lost in a marsh due to high tide

King John was attempting to travel across the estuary known as 'The Wash' from King's Lynn. He was fleeing the army of Prince Louis of France, who the English barons had invited to take the throne. John took a longer, safe route around the marshy Wash, but he sent his slow-moving baggage train directly across the estuary. The horse drawn wagons moved too slowly to make it across before high tide, and most of the King's baggage - including the Crown Jewels - were lost. Due to deposits of sediment over the years, the coastline of The Wash has changed dramatically since the 13th century. This would make it very difficult to locate the jewels today, especially since the exact spot where they were lost is unknown.

What makes it special is the mysterious "Money Pit" found on the southeastern part of the island. For over 200 years speculators have been digging out this unusual hole and its many layers of logs and stones, only to have the hole flood with sea water. Most of these people believe that Captain Kidd or Blackbeard buried large amounts of gold at this location, and this supposition is hard to prove or disprove. Is there a missing or hidden treasure at this fascinating spot? Or has a fortune been spent trying to find that which is not there?
