Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the brig 'Mary' left from Jamaica in 1733 for the West Indies why were Edward and Eliza Seward on board?

Answer: They were on their honeymoon

The 'Mary' belonged to Edward Seward's uncle. It was on a trading mission from England to the West Indies, stopping first in Jamaica.
2. In December, the 'Mary' ran into a huge hurricane. Which persons survived and made it to Henry Morgan's rendezvous point of Old Providence Island?

Answer: Edward and Eliza Seward

The brig had cleared Pedro Bank and were headed for Honduras when they were caught in a severe hurricane. After several days of floating helplessly, the breakers of Old Providence Island were spotted. The Sewards refused to leave the ship because the waves were so severe.

The Captain and crew took to the lifeboats, which were swamped by tremendous waves. The Captain, along with his crew, were all drowned in the stormy sea.
3. How did the castaways survive on Old Providence Island?

Answer: All of these

Seward carefully planted the bags of seeds he found on the 'Mary'. He caught fish, and they found yams, melons, and pumpkins growing on the island. They also had supplies, such as cases of wine, from the ship.
4. A dog, named King Charles, also survived the storm. What did it do to help them?

Answer: Killed lizards

The little Spaniel, King Charles, belonging to the Sewards, whenever the Sewards needed fresh meat, would catch a lizard which they promptly cooked!
5. Whilst exploring the island, what did Edward Seward find in the back of a cave?

6. After the survivors had been on the island awhile, who came to the island?

Answer: Six slaves

Six slaves arrived in two canoes. They told the Sewards they had escaped from a shipwreck two nights before. They asked for Seward's help, and he did help them. They got along fabulously. Seward taught them English, and they helped him build a hut so he and his wife could move off of the 'Mary'. They were excellent companions for the Sewards.
7. How did the castaways leave the island?

Answer: Aboard an English ship that landed there

An English ship that was being chased by a Spanish ship ran aground on Old Providence Island. Seward and the former slaves fired on the Spanish and they left. They helped repair the English ship, and the Sewards and the treasure left the island. The former slaves chose to remain on the island.
