From Quiz "Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 2)"

Canadian Road Rules Trivia Questions

1. What road signs usually have a yellow background?

From Quiz
Could You Pass a 2008 Ontario Drivers Test? #2

Answer: Warning signs

A warning sign is on the side of the road to tell drivers that there may be a condition on the road that they need to be aware of and take extra caution with. A warning sign is just that, a warning. These signs can warn drivers of unexpected conditions on the road, such as pavement ending or you are about to come upon a sharp corner. The first recorded warning sign was placed on the side of the road in 1908, in London.

2. When taking the written driver's test you can expect to see one or more questions concerning the rules for parking. Here is a example of one of the questions you may encounter; how close can you park to a fire hydrant?

From Quiz Could You Pass a 2008 Ontario Drivers Test? #1

Answer: 3 metres

I sometimes have difficulty judging distance quickly, so if the only parking spot available is near a fire hydrant I try to leave a space that is two vehicles long (I drive a mini van). A metre, is roughly, a little longer than three feet, so three metres would be close to ten feet. If you are caught parking to close to a fire hydrant you can be fined, to provide a bit of a parameter about this offense. In Toronto, in 2008, a fine for parking to close to a fire hydrant can cost you up to $250.

3. In 1903, drivers in the province of Ontario were required to obtain this item- what did these early drivers need?

From Quiz Ontario Drivers - Looking Back

Answer: Vehicle license

In 1903, the year that this went into effect, across Ontario 178, vehicles were registered and licenced. Slightly more than forty percent of those vehicles were found in Toronto. Chauffeurs did not have to register or get licenses for their limos at that time, they did not have to do this until 1909. Thirteen years after this went in to effect the Provincial Department of Public Highways was established, partially because the number of registered vehicles in Ontario had gone up to 52,590.

4. What class of Driver's License do you require to operate a motorcycle in British Columbia?

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 2)

Answer: Class 6

A Class 6 Driver's License is required to operate a motorcycle in BC. A Motorcycle Learner's License is a Class 8L License, and a Motorcycle Novice Driver's License is a Class 8 License.

5. What is the definition of a "Highway"?

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 1)

Answer: Any road designed for travel by the general public

According to the Motor Vehicle Act, a "Highway" is any road that is specifically designed for travel by the general motoring public.

6. Outside my home there is a white rectangular road sign. On this sign is the letter P. Over the P is a circle with a diagonal slash through it. Under the circle with the P, "11 PM - 6 AM" is seen. What is this sign saying?

From Quiz Could You Pass a 2008 Ontario Drivers Test? #2

Answer: No parking between the hours indicated.

No Parking signs are instructions to motorists, this particular sign prevents motorists from parking between 11 o'clock at night to 6 o'clock in the morning, some parking signs will also include the days that you may park there. If you choose to ignore the instructions on the sign and park wherever and whenever you want then you run the risk of having your vehicle towed or ticketed. Hamilton, Ontario was one of the first cities to post parking signs and to implement by-laws to enforce those parking signs.

7. The drivers handbook tell you to use low-beam headlights when driving in fog at night. If you were asked on the test what type of headlights for fog at night the correct answer would be low- beams, but what is the reason for using low-beams?

From Quiz Could You Pass a 2008 Ontario Drivers Test? #1

Answer: You will have better visibility on the road.

In the handbook there is a list of several things that you can do when driving in fog to increase your safety. Fog like any other type of bad weather requires the driver to slow down and do everything possible to remain safe on the road. Using your low-beams is just one way to achieve this, although it is not a guarantee, your high-beams will make it harder to see in bad weather. The light from your high-beams will reflect off of the fog making it seem much thicker and it is harder to see clearly.

8. What is the main difference (in terms of conditions and restrictions) between having a G2 license and a full G license?

From Quiz Rules of the (Ontario) Road

Answer: The amount of alcohol you may have in your system

G2 drivers have a lot more freedom than G1 drivers - they may drive on their own without another licensed driver, they may drive on the highway, and they may drive at any time, day or night (though there are some restrictions on night driving). The main restriction on G2 drivers is that, just like G1 drivers, they are not permitted to have any alcohol in their system - B.A.L. must be 0. There are also other conditions on G2 drivers. The other restrictions are newer and generally aren't considered as restricting as the alcohol one. These include having only one passenger under 19 years of age in the car, other than the driver, during the first six months of the G2 stage, and only three passengers under the age of 19 after the first six months (not including immediate family members).

9. When the Ontario government first decided that drivers of a personal motor vehicle must obtain a drivers license, how much were they charged?

From Quiz Ontario Drivers - Looking Back

Answer: One dollar

It would have been much easier to obtain a drivers license in 1927, the year that they first came out, than it is now. Late in the year (2008) when my son goes to take his test for a drivers license he will be required to pay $125, which makes it an increase of over a dollar a year form 1927 to 2008. The only requirement that hasn't changed from 1927 to 2008 is the minimum age requirement, you must be at least 16 years old to apply, then and now. Although several requirements have been added to help make drivers more safe to themselves and safe to others, in 1927 the only other requirements were that the driver had either six months driving experience or could prove that they had driven at least 500 miles.

10. In BC, new drivers are subject to several conditions on their introductory licenses. What is one of the conditions of a Learner's License? (Class 7L, Class 8L)

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 2)

Answer: 0.00 Blood Alcohol Content

Learner and Novice drivers are not permitted to consume any alcohol and operate a motor vehicle. This can even include certain cough syrups or even desserts with alcohol in them. There is a strict zero tolerance policy surrounding this.

11. What is the speed limit inside a municipality?

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 1)

Answer: 50 km/h unless otherwise posted.

The speed limit inside a municipality is 50 km/h unless otherwise indicated on a posted sign. Breaking this limit could net you a fine in the neighborhood of $115-$230 depending on precisely how fast you were travelling.

12. Information and direction signs are usually, but not always, what color?

From Quiz Could You Pass a 2008 Ontario Drivers Test? #2

Answer: Green

Information and direction signs can tell drivers where they are, how far they are from there destination and they can tell drivers what direction they are travelling in. Information and direction signs, such as a blue H, can tell drivers how to find a local hospital, there is also signs to tell drivers where they can go for information. Information and direction signs can be found posted along all highways.

13. If there are no signs or posted speed limits, what is the speed limit on roads in built-up areas (cities, towns, villages) in Ontario?

From Quiz Rules of the (Ontario) Road

Answer: 50 km/h

50 km/h is the speed limit if there is no other limit posted (on roads not in built-up areas, the allowed speed if there is no other posted is 80 km/h). Most residential areas in Ontario have a speed limit of 40 km/h, whereas the 400-series highways as well as other major highways, such as the Don Valley Parkway in Toronto, usually have a speed limit of 100 km/h. Personally, I have yet to encounter a built-up area that does not have a posted speed limit. Most major city streets are either 60 km/h or 80 km/h, at least where I drive!

14. GLS was introduced in Ontario on April 1, 1994; what does GLS stand for?

From Quiz Ontario Drivers - Looking Back

Answer: Graduated Licensing System

The purpose of the Graduated Licensing System was to increase driver safety on the road. First time drivers now take longer before they are fully licensed giving them more time to develop better judgment and habits on the road. They must also pass a series of tests to prove their knowledge and to become more secure in their driving skills.

15. What class of driver's license do you require to operate a passenger car or light truck in British Columbia?

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 1)

Answer: Class 5

A Class 5 British Columbia Driver's License is required to operate a passenger car or light truck in British Columbia. You may also operate under a class 7 license, which is a Novice Driver's License. Violating the class requirements in BC could get you fined for $115.

16. What does a white X outlined in red mean?

From Quiz Could You Pass a 2008 Ontario Drivers Test? #2

Answer: Railroad crossing

Every single railroad track that intersects a public road/highway will be marked by one of these signs. Some railway crossings will also have lights or lights and a barrier. All drivers must use caution when crossing a track, these signs are a reminder to slow down and look for a train. As a driver you will be able to stop a lot faster than the train and frankly the train is a lot bigger so use extra caution.

17. This company can trace its roots back to the early 1900s. It is the fore- runner for road-side assistance in Ontario. What company would this be?

From Quiz Ontario Drivers - Looking Back

Answer: CAA

People who purchase CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) membership have many services available to them. CAA provides more than just roadside assistance, at the CAA web site they claim to be able to provide "180 reasons to be a member". In the July 2008 newsletter, it said that there were 5 million members; that is a huge increase from the original 27 members in 1903.

18. In British Columbia, what is the legal amount of tinting that can be applied to driver and passenger side windows?

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 2)

Answer: None

No tint may be applied to a window in front of the driver's shoulders, unless that tinting is one way UV blocking tint. This includes side windows and the front windshield. The only exception is factory shading.

19. What Class of license do you need to operate a tractor-trailer unit in British Columbia?

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 1)

Answer: Class 1

In British Columbia, you would require a Class 1 Driver's License to operate a tractor-trailer unit. As most tractor trailer units are equipped with air brakes, you would also need an Air Brake Endorsement (Endorsement 15).

20. At a four-way stop intersection, which driver has the right-of-way?

From Quiz Rules of the (Ontario) Road

Answer: Both of these may be correct

When all drivers at an intersection have a stop sign, the driver who came to a full stop first should be the one to proceed through the intersection first. In a case where two vehicles pulled up to the intersection at the same time, the right-of-way is yielded to the driver on the right.

21. Under the new guidelines developed in 1994, how many tests must a new driver pass in order to become a fully licensed driver of a car in Ontario?

From Quiz Ontario Drivers - Looking Back

Answer: 4

The first test is a written test, testing your knowledge of the information in "The Official MTO Driver's Handbook". This test is to make sure that you have studied and that you understand the rules of the road. The second test is a vision test, basically to make sure that your vision is good enough to drive, some drivers are required to wear glasses when driving. The last two tests are both road tests, a qualified tester will accompany new drivers on these tests to determine if the new driver has the necessary skills to be driving a car. If the new driver has taken and passed a ministry-approved drivers education course, the testing can be done in 20 months, but new drivers have up to 5 years to complete the testing.

22. In British Columbia, what would be an example of a "restriction" on a Driver's License?

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 2)

Answer: Corrective lenses required

"Corrective Lenses Required" would be Restriction 21, while the other three would be examples of "endorsements".

23. What is the maximum Blood-Alcohol content allowable in British Columbia, with which you could still operate your vehicle?

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 1)

Answer: 0.05 mg in 100 mL of blood.

In British Columbia, driving with a BAC of over 0.05 mg of alcohol in 100 mL of blood would warrant a 24-hour Roadside Suspension. Driving with over 0.08 mg in 100 mL of blood would warrant an Impaired Driving charge. Novice Drivers (Class 7) are not permitted to consume any alcohol and drive.

24. On the highway this sign is generally posted in groups. It is a yellow rectangle with a bold black arrow in the center. What does it mean when you see several of there on the side of the road?

From Quiz Could You Pass a 2008 Ontario Drivers Test? #2

Answer: Sharp or long corner

Where you see one of these signs there will be others, they are posted in groups around corners. These signs are listed under the Warning signs in the drivers handbook, that's what they do, warn you of a sharp corner. The arrow on the sign will be pointing in the direction of the corner.

25. In 1911, Ontario issued a license plate that was made out of a unusual material. For this one year only what did motorists put on their vehicles?

From Quiz Ontario Drivers - Looking Back

Answer: Porcelain license plates.

Over the years there have been a few different types of material used to make license plates. The license plate on your car/van/truck right now is probably made of aluminum, but in the past they have been steel, rubber, and even just a brass shield. During WW1, some of the license plates issued were made out of cardboard because they had ran out of the steel to make the plates.

26. It's a dark night. Driving along a stretch of deserted highway, you happen upon an overturned vehicle. What do you do?

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 1)

Answer: Stop, and render any assistance possible.

Under the Motor Vehicle Act, you MUST stop at a motor vehicle accident if emergency services have not yet arrived. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but it is a good practice to stop, unless you are creating more of a danger by doing so. Also, failing to remain at the scene of an accident is illegal.

27. This road sign is one that is frequently seen while driving on any road in Ontario. It is a yellow diamond with a black silhouette of a deer on it. What road sign is this?

From Quiz Could You Pass a 2008 Ontario Drivers Test? #2

Answer: Deer Crossing

Deer crossing signs are placed on the sides of the roads where there have been collisions with wildlife, and where wildlife has been frequently observed coming out to the road. Hitting a large animal on the road can cause a major accident, it can cause serious damage to your vehicle, and it can cause serious injury to the occupants of the vehicle. Animals can come out to the sides of the road and cross the road for a number of reasons, the most common reason is that the animal is trying to get at the salt that is on the sides of the road, but again animals are unpredictable so drivers need to watch for them. The yellow deer crossing sign seems to be the most common but I have also seen them with a orange background, and some of them have a moose depicted on them, but whichever one you see it means watch for wildlife and take precautions. In the handbook there are a list of precautions that you can take while driving to avoid hitting a animal.

28. Up to what Blood Alcohol Level may a driver have, while still legally operating his or her vehicle?

From Quiz Rules of the (Ontario) Road

Answer: 0.08 B.A.L.

This is the common limit for all drivers in Canada, not just in Ontario. However, you should be aware that you may still be charged with dangerous driving if a police officer determines you to be intoxicated, even if your B.A.L. is less than 0.08. This is difference between Driving Under the Influence, and Driving While Intoxicated. Not everyone has the same response to the same amount of alcohol. While one person may be very drunk with a B.A.L. of 0.04, another person may seem perfectly fine with a B.A.L of 0.10. Under newer legislations, drivers are also suspended for having a B.A.L. over 0.05, but they do not receive the same punishments and legal ramifications as drivers who have a B.A.L. over 0.08.

29. What set of rules governs the operation of vehicles on roadways in British Columbia?

From Quiz Rules of the Road in British Columbia (Part 2)

Answer: Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations

The Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations (MVA-R) govern the operation of all classes of motor vehicles on roadways, from motor scooters to big rigs.
