Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What road signs usually have a yellow background?

Answer: Warning signs

A warning sign is on the side of the road to tell drivers that there may be a condition on the road that they need to be aware of and take extra caution with. A warning sign is just that, a warning. These signs can warn drivers of unexpected conditions on the road, such as pavement ending or you are about to come upon a sharp corner.

The first recorded warning sign was placed on the side of the road in 1908, in London.
2. Outside my home there is a white rectangular road sign. On this sign is the letter P. Over the P is a circle with a diagonal slash through it. Under the circle with the P, "11 PM - 6 AM" is seen. What is this sign saying?

Answer: No parking between the hours indicated.

No Parking signs are instructions to motorists, this particular sign prevents motorists from parking between 11 o'clock at night to 6 o'clock in the morning, some parking signs will also include the days that you may park there. If you choose to ignore the instructions on the sign and park wherever and whenever you want then you run the risk of having your vehicle towed or ticketed. Hamilton, Ontario was one of the first cities to post parking signs and to implement by-laws to enforce those parking signs.
3. Information and direction signs are usually, but not always, what color?

Answer: Green

Information and direction signs can tell drivers where they are, how far they are from there destination and they can tell drivers what direction they are travelling in. Information and direction signs, such as a blue H, can tell drivers how to find a local hospital, there is also signs to tell drivers where they can go for information.

Information and direction signs can be found posted along all highways.
4. What does a white X outlined in red mean?

Answer: Railroad crossing

Every single railroad track that intersects a public road/highway will be marked by one of these signs. Some railway crossings will also have lights or lights and a barrier. All drivers must use caution when crossing a track, these signs are a reminder to slow down and look for a train.

As a driver you will be able to stop a lot faster than the train and frankly the train is a lot bigger so use extra caution.
5. This sign is a long white rectangle. In the upper left corner is a smaller rectangle that is black with a white diamond in it. Beside that black rectangle there is a picture, in black, of a bus and under the bus is a car with the number 2 on it. Below all this there are the words, "2 or more persons". What is this sign?

Answer: High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) sign

This sign is telling drivers who can use the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, this particular sign is saying buses and vehicles with two or more passengers. Proper use of these lanes are supposed to help with traffic jams, also people who are car pooling or taking buses are producing less "harmful emissions" than they would have if they were all in a separate vehicle.
6. On the highway this sign is generally posted in groups. It is a yellow rectangle with a bold black arrow in the center. What does it mean when you see several of there on the side of the road?

Answer: Sharp or long corner

Where you see one of these signs there will be others, they are posted in groups around corners. These signs are listed under the Warning signs in the drivers handbook, that's what they do, warn you of a sharp corner. The arrow on the sign will be pointing in the direction of the corner.
7. This road sign is one that is frequently seen while driving on any road in Ontario. It is a yellow diamond with a black silhouette of a deer on it. What road sign is this?

Answer: Deer Crossing

Deer crossing signs are placed on the sides of the roads where there have been collisions with wildlife, and where wildlife has been frequently observed coming out to the road. Hitting a large animal on the road can cause a major accident, it can cause serious damage to your vehicle, and it can cause serious injury to the occupants of the vehicle. Animals can come out to the sides of the road and cross the road for a number of reasons, the most common reason is that the animal is trying to get at the salt that is on the sides of the road, but again animals are unpredictable so drivers need to watch for them.

The yellow deer crossing sign seems to be the most common but I have also seen them with a orange background, and some of them have a moose depicted on them, but whichever one you see it means watch for wildlife and take precautions.

In the handbook there are a list of precautions that you can take while driving to avoid hitting a animal.
8. This sign is square and it has a red circle on a white background. In the red circle is a horizontal white line. What does this sign mean?

Answer: Do not enter

Where this sign is posted you may not enter that road. For whatever reason the entrance where that sign is posted is unsafe to drivers.
9. At some traffic lights, there are signs attached to the pole that the lights are on. If you were to see a sign that says 'left turn signal' next to a set of traffic lights what would it mean?

Answer: There will be a green arrow in the traffic lights telling you when to turn left.

This is usually found at busy intersections that have traffic lights. It means that there will briefly be a green arrow for drivers turning left while the rest of the intersection will be facing a red light.
10. This sign is not found on the side of the road. It is an orange triangle with a red border. This orange and red triangle also appears to have the points cut off. What does this sign mean?

Answer: Slow moving vehicle

This sign is to be mounted at the back of a slow moving vehicle. it is to be mounted somewhere between 2 feet and 6 feet from the ground so that it will be clearly visible to other motorists. A slow moving vehicle is defined as a motorized vehicle that is going 40km/h or less. If a farmer wishes to drive his tractor on the road/highway instead of just crossing it, by law there must be one of these signs displayed on the rear of the tractor.
