British Roads & Motorways Trivia Questions

1. Beginning at roughly 1 o'clock, inside the M25 at Woodford, the M11 runs north to which university city?

From Quiz
Around the M25 in Ten Questions

Answer: Cambridge

On its way northwards, the M11 passes by Stansted Airport, the third busiest of London's airports. Upon reaching Cambridge, it eases around the city to the west, past the various campuses of Cambridge University, before merging with the A14 which, in turn, connects up with the A1.

2. Referred to by locals as the 'Central Motorway', the mile-long A167(M) runs through which city in Northern England?

From Quiz A Highway Runs Through It

Answer: Newcastle upon Tyne

The A167(M) runs between the Tyne Bridge and Exhibition Park in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was opened in 1975 and was originally going to be part of a much greater motorway network around Newcastle that had been planned in the 1960s but the A167(M) was the only motorway in that plan which was built.

3. Holland Road is in London, England. In which area of London is it?

From Quiz Holland Road

Answer: West

The West End of London is well known for theatres, restaurants and expensive stores and houses. Further west can be be found some rather grand residential areas, of which Holland Road is a part.

4. On the whole, London is a very green city with extensive parks and open spaces, the largest of which is actually a forest which is conserved and administered by the City of London Corporation. What is its name?

From Quiz The Road More Traveled

Answer: Epping Forest

Epping Forest covers about 6000 acres and is protected by two Acts of Parliament passed in 1878, which prevent enclosure or development. It is the largest open space in London and lies to the east, straddling the M25 with about half of the forest on either side of it. It's a long, narrow tract of land, about 12 miles in length and never more than 2.5 miles wide. Northwood is a residential area to the west of Central London within the M25 circle, and Brookwood is home to Brookwood Cemetary, the modern name of the London Necropolis near Woking, and outside the M25.

5. Which major UK road stretches from Edinburgh to London?

From Quiz Roads in the United Kingdom

Answer: A1

The A1 road begins in Edinburgh and ends at St. Paul's Cathedral in central London, stretching for 410 miles.

6. The first long distance motorway in England was the M1. In what year did its first section open, from Watford to Rugby?

From Quiz Motorways of England

Answer: 1959

Although not the very first motorway-standard road in the UK, the M1 was the first designed to take long distance traffic between London and Birmingham- England's two largest cities. Because it was the first motorway of its kind in the UK, two short spur motorways were constructed at either end to help cope with traffic. These were the M45 to Coventry and the former M10 to St Albans.

7. "A" roads are the second highest classification of British roads, ranked in order of importance. What is the highest classification?

From Quiz Three, Two, One

Answer: Motorways

Motorway is the highest classification of British road followed by A, B, C, D and U for unclassified. C, D and U classifications are for the benefit of road planners and shouldn't appear on public signs, although there are occasional exceptions to this rule. Strictly speaking we might also include A(M) roads which are stretches of A roads that have been upgraded to motorway status. "A" roads around London are classified by which of four zones they fall into - 1, 2, 3 or 4. The boundaries between these zones are the A1, A3 and A4 roads as they come outwards from London, together with the river Thames which serves as the boundary between zones 1 and 2 rather than the A2. Thus, the 3 at the beginning of the A321 indicates that at least part of it is located in zone 3 between the A3 and A4.

8. From my home in Derbyshire, I want to drive to Bristol. Which motorways will I use?

From Quiz British Road Journeys

Answer: M1, M42, M5

This isn't a bad journey, apart from the terrible part of the M42 around Birmingham, especially now it is ridden with speed cameras!

9. Which two locations are joined by the M1?

From Quiz UK Motorways

Answer: London and Leeds

Built between 1959 and 1999, the M1 links the A406 North Circular Road in London to the A1(M)at Aberford, West Yorkshire. The services at Watford Gap were the first ever motorway services in the UK.

10. Junction 26 of the M1 is closest to which city?

From Quiz The M1 Motorway - Junctions 12 to 26

Answer: Nottingham

Although junction 25 is technically closer to Nottingham, junction 26 can often be a faster route into the city, especially during rush hour.

11. The first Motorway Service Areas in Great Britain were owned by which organisation?

From Quiz British Motorway Service Areas

Answer: Department of Transport

Initially, the DoT owned almost all of Britain's Motorway Service Areas, with the sites being let on 50-year leases to private operating companies. However, these were gradually sold off to private companies, and by 2016 only around 20 remained in the hands of the Government.

12. Which motorway contains the highest point on the UK motorway network?

From Quiz British Motorways

Answer: M62

The section of the M62 at Junction 22 as the motorway crosses Saddleworth Moor, is the highest point in the UK motorway network, at 1442ft above sea level.

13. What is the popular name of the junction with the A 598 Finchley Road named after a long demolished garage?

From Quiz London's North Circular Road A 406

Answer: Henlys Corner

The Angel Edmonton is a few miles to the east at the junction with Fore Street. The Angel Islington is off the City Road, and Shannon Corner is on the A3 near New Malden.

14. One of the world's shortest motorways, the M275 carries traffic from the M27 into which southern city?

From Quiz UK Motorways, but not the M1

Answer: Portsmouth

Opened in 1976, the M275 begins at junction 12 of the M27 and runs just two miles southwards into the City of Portsmouth. The famous "Sails of the South" landmark stands between the "In" and "Out" carriageways and motorists entering the city enjoy scenic views of Portsmouth's historic harbour. Of the alternatives, the slightly longer (3 miles) M271 runs from the M27 into Southampton's dock area. Motorists travelling along the south coast on the M27 need to join the M3 heading towards London in order to reach Winchester. The M27 ends just a few miles west of Southampton, so those heading for Bournemouth will continue on the A31 across The New Forest.

15. At Junction 29, which A road (whose digits add to an even number) heads off to the east, connecting the Greater London area to Essex's Southend-on-Sea?

From Quiz Around the M25 in Ten Questions

Answer: A127

At Gallows Corner, near Romford in London, the A127 begins its eastward trek to the coast, intersecting the M25 at Junction 29 and coming to an end, around 24 miles later, just outside Southend Victoria train station. Major locations along the way include Basildon and London Southend Airport.

16. Opened in 2011 and costing £692 million to build, through which Scottish city does the M74 extension run?

From Quiz A Highway Runs Through It

Answer: Glasgow

The M74 extension is a 5-mile extension to the northern end of the M74 which joins it up to the M8 and the M77. The M74 extension runs south of the River Clyde and creates a major route through the south of Glasgow. Work was started on construction in 2008 and the road opened to traffic in June 2011. The road was planned to cost £444 million and when it was opened the Scottish government claimed it was under budget: however the 'under budget' figure did not include the cost of purchasing the land that the motorway was built on; when this money is included the cost of the extension is £692 million, making it considerably over budget!

17. Holland Road is in which Royal London Borough?

From Quiz Holland Road

Answer: Kensington and Chelsea.

Kensington was granted status as a Royal Borough in memory of Queen Victoria, who was born at Kensington Palace. The Royal status was transferred when Kensington and Chelsea were merged into one borough.

18. In 1747 Horace Walpole began the construction of a house that marked the beginning of the Gothic Revival in England. The house is in Twickenham - what is its name?

From Quiz The Road More Traveled

Answer: Strawberry Hill

Horace Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford, was a writer and politician who wrote 'The Castle of Otranto', and was a cousin of Lord Nelson. The house was the inspiration for the many Gothic Revival buildings that were created in the 19th century, as well as for 'gothic' romances. It is now administered by the Friends of Strawberry Hill. Ham House is a National Trust property not far away in Richmond. Chapel House is in Twickenham; built in 1721, it was once the home of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. 'Robin Hill' is the fictitious country house built for Soames Forsyte in John Galsworthy's 'Forsyte Saga'. Twickenham is within the western boundary of the M25.

19. Alongside the M4, which other UK motorway crosses the River Severn?

From Quiz Roads in the United Kingdom

20. The A321 starts at Henley, venue for a famous annual rowing regatta. The river on which this regatta takes place is reflected in the full name of the town, which is Henley-on-WHAT?

From Quiz Three, Two, One

Answer: Thames

From Quiz UK Motorways

Answer: Stroodat Three Crutches and Faversham

23. How many Motorway Service Areas are located to serve traffic on the M25 - London's orbital motorway (some would say car park!)?

From Quiz British Motorway Service Areas

Answer: Four

There are four Service Areas on the M25, two north of the River Thames and two south; Clackett Lane between junctions 5 and 6 (south); Cobham between junctions 9 and 10 (south); South Mimms at junction 23 (north); Thurrock at junction 30, (north);

24. What is the locally famous multiple traffic light controlled roundabout and underpass at the junction with the A40 Western Avenue among others?

From Quiz London's North Circular Road A 406

Answer: Hanger Lane gyratory system

Fiveways Corner is a couple of miles outside the A 406 in Mill Hill, as is Mill Hill Circus. Piccadilly Circus isn't a roundabout but a major intersection right in London's centre.

25. Another of the shorter UK motorways, the M45 also carries one of the lowest volumes of traffic. At one end it joins the M1 at junction 17, and at the other it exits to the southwest of which town?

From Quiz UK Motorways, but not the M1

Answer: Rugby

Located just north of the Watford Gap Services, the M45 can be accessed only by traffic travelling northbound on the M1. It runs just eight miles before exiting onto the A45 near the village of Thurlaston to the southwest of Rugby. The M45 is one of the oldest UK motorways, dating back to 1959, when the M1 only went as far north as Junction 18. The intention was to funnel some of the London-Birmingham traffic off of the motorway onto an alternative route. The opening of the M6 in 1972 rendered the M45 redundant, hence its relatively low traffic volume compared to other motorways today.

26. Despite being the same bit of road, the M25 changes into the A282 briefly as it crosses the River Thames near which location, which gives its name to the crossing?

From Quiz Around the M25 in Ten Questions

Answer: Dartford

The Dartford Crossing refers to both the bridge and tunnels that respectively go over and under the Thames as it heads eastwards from central London out to the North Sea. The tunnels, which carry northbound traffic, are around 0.9 miles long, while the main section of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, which facilitates southbound traffic, is around 0.3 miles long. The crossing opened with a single tunnel, but traffic demands necessitated the construction of a second and, later, a bridge. The Dartford Crossing, nowadays a free-flow toll road, still suffers from significant congestion and is one of the busiest sections of the London Orbital Motorway during peak hours.

27. Heading east, the M65 skirts round Blackburn before running through the centre of which Lancashire town?

From Quiz A Highway Runs Through It

Answer: Burnley

The M65 runs from Bamber Bridge to Colne and helps link the towns of Blackburn, Accrington and Burnley to the M6 and M61. It is 40 miles long and was built between 1981 and 1997 with sections opening all through this period. The stretch from junctions 10 to 11 passes through Burnley and was part of the first section to be opened. The stretch between junctions 10 and 14 is unusual in that it is managed by Lancashire County Council rather than the Highways Agency who are usually responsible for managing motorways in the UK.

28. What is the name of the church on Holland Road, London?

From Quiz Holland Road

Answer: St. John the Baptist

The site of the church was bought in 1868 but construction of the stone church was not started until the mid-1880s. The church was eventually finished in 1910 and the church has an uneven floor because it was built in stages.

29. Harefield is a village in the north-west of the M25 circle. It is world famous for what?

From Quiz The Road More Traveled

Answer: Its hospital

Harefield Hospital is one of the world leaders in heart and lung transplants. Pioneering work was done under Sir Magdi Yacoub, an Egyptian surgeon, from 1980 onwards, and it remains a world leader in transplant technology.

30. In Scotland, the A74(M) becomes which motorway at junction 13?

From Quiz Roads in the United Kingdom

Answer: M74

At the Abington junction 13, the A74(M) becomes the M74 continuing onwards to Glasgow. Or the other way around, to the M6 and England.
