Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two locations are joined by the M1?

Answer: London and Leeds

Built between 1959 and 1999, the M1 links the A406 North Circular Road in London to the A1(M)at Aberford, West Yorkshire. The services at Watford Gap were the first ever motorway services in the UK.
2. Which two locations are joined by the M2?

Answer: Stroodat Three Crutches and Faversham

Built between 1963 and 1965 as a bypass for the Medway towns of Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, and Rainham. Traffic has decreased since the building of the M20 in the early 1990s.
3. Which two locations are joined by the M3?

Answer: London and Southampton

Built between 1971 and 1995, the M3 links the A303 at Sunbury-on-Thames to the A33 at Southampton. The building of the section through Twyford Down prompted huge protests from Greenpeace and other environmental groups as it destroyed a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
4. Which two locations are joined by the M4?

Answer: London and Pontarddulais

Built between 1961 and 1996, the M4 joins the A4 in London to the A4138 at Pontarddulais near Llanelli, South Wales. It includes the Second Severn Crossing, a 5.1km toll bridge over the River Severn built between 1992 and 1996.
5. Which two locations are joined by the M5?

Answer: Birmingham and Exeter

Built between 1962 and 1977, the M5 links the M6 at Great Barr Birmingham with the A30 at Exeter. In 2005, during alterations between Junctions 17 and 20, the M5 went into the record books as having the UK's longest ever contraflow system at 9 miles long.
6. Which two locations are joined by the M6?

Answer: Rugby and Carlisle

The M6 was built between 1958 and 1972 and is often referred to as the "Backbone of Britain". Competing with the M25 for the title of Britains busiest motorway, it contains the UK's first ever length of motorway (the Preston Bypass) and the world famous Spaghetti Junction (the Gravelly Hill Interchange in Birmingham). It is also apparently the most haunted motorway in Britain.
7. There is no M7 for some reason, so which two locations are joined by the M8?

Answer: Edinburgh and Langbank

Built in several pieces between 1965 and 1995, the M8 runs from the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass across the Central Belt, through Glasgow and ends at the A8 in Greenock. Renowned for its traffic jams, it has been voted Britains second worst road. The central section in West Lothian is prone to subsidence due to abandoned mineworkings.
8. Which two locations are joined by the M9?

Answer: Edinburgh and Dunblane

Built between 1968 and 1980, the M9 runs from the A8 Newbridge Interchange at Edinburgh to the A9 at Dunblane. Spurs from this motorway serve the two major crossing points on the River Forth (the Forth Road Bridge and Kincardine Bridge).
9. Which of these motorways is the longest?

Answer: M6

The M6 is Britains longest motorway at 227 miles. The lengths of all these motorways in miles is as follows. M1 - 193, M2 - 26, M3 - 59, M4 - 190, M5 - 163, M6 - 227, M8 - 60, M9 - 33. Britains shortest motorway is the M898 Erskine Bridge Spur, West of Glasgow which is just 1 mile long.
10. Which of these motorways is unique in the UK as it does not connect with any other motorway?

Answer: M2

All of Britains motorways are interconnected except for the M2. It was originally planned to run from London to Dover, but the rest of the road was never built and it remains a bypass for the Medway towns.
