Malls & Shopping Centers Trivia Questions

1. Which "heavenly" city was closest to the Hawthorne Plaza Shopping Center, which closed its doors in 1999?

From Quiz
They'll Hurt You and Desert You

Answer: Los Angeles

Also known as the Hawthorne Plaza, the Hawthorne Plaza Shopping Center opened in 1977 in Hawthorne, California. This city is located within Los Angeles County in California, and is relatively close to the city of Los Angeles. The mall was quite popular when it first opened, but from the start, it was associated with many unfortunate events. For example, several shootings occurred in the mall just years after it opened, and its stores also suffered heavy losses due to the 1992 riots in protest of how Rodney King was arrested. Though there have been a few proposals to revive the mall over the years, these have continuously failed. Instead, the abandoned mall has become a popular place to film movies. Some of these include "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" and "Agents of Shield".

2. What originally stood on the land where the mall stands?

From Quiz Monroeville Mall

Answer: Harper's Mine

Harper's Mine was a strip mine. In the Thirties, people who worked on the land mined, not shop like we do in the Twenty-First Century. They could have built Three Rivers Stadium where the mall is.

3. One of the biggest malls in the area, this particular one opened in the early '90s and was one of the first malls in the country to feature a fully-functional indoor ice skating rink.

From Quiz Major Malls of Metro Manila

Answer: SM Megamall

SM Megamall opened in the early 1990s to a country yet-uninitiated to the concept of the supermall. When it opened, it was the biggest mall in the country in terms of floor area and was among the top ten biggest malls in the world. A little piece of trivia: The mall is so ubiquitous that many buses that pass along EDSA have SM Megamall ("Megamall") as one of their official kilometer-stop points.(along with accompanying signs on the bus)

4. How many floors are there in the Mall of America?

From Quiz Mall of America

Answer: 4

There are 4 floors total. 3 of which are for general shopping. The fourth (top) floor is all entertainment activities and a few restaurants. In fact, if you want to go to a night club while in town, the 4th floor would be a good place to check out.

5. Which word, perhaps reminiscent of Winnie the Pooh, completes the name of a shopping mall in Akron, Ohio, that closed its doors in 2008, Rolling ___?

From Quiz They'll Hurt You and Desert You

Answer: Acres

The Rolling Acres Mall opened in 1975 and at one point had over 100 stores inside, such as Sears, JCPenney, and Macy's. For the rest of the 20th century, the mall saw the opening of more stores like Kaufmann's and Target, but the shopping center still did not reach the popularity its owners were expecting. Rolling Acres continued to decline in the 2000s, as more and more stores announced their departure from the project. The mall's downfall was made even more evident by the discovery of a homeless man living in one of the unoccupied spaces and keeping himself fed with items that were leftover in what used to be a GNC store. Even though the mall closed its doors in 2008, some stores like Sears and JCPenney continued to operate until 2013, and the building was demolished in 2019. The reference to Winnie the Pooh refers to the Hundred Acre Wood that Pooh and Christopher Robin would frequently be in.

6. After riding some rides, you decide you want to try something new. While walking around you see a sign, asking you if you are "Afraid of the Dark?". You are intrigued, and head to this next attraction. Where are you now?

9. In which "windy" state was the Dixie Square Mall located before its demise in 1978?

From Quiz They'll Hurt You and Desert You

Answer: Illinois

The Dixie Square Mall was located in Harvey, Illinois. It opened in 1966, and its tenants included well-known brands like Walgreens, JCPenney, and Woolworth. Unfortunately for the mall's developers and patrons, the area experienced a dramatic uptick in criminal activity in the 1970s, which directly affected the mall's surrounding area and the resulting clients that wanted to shop there. Some of these crimes happened inside the mall itself, further alienating customers. The shopping center continued to deteriorate since shops were experiencing vandalism and shoplifting. All of these issues finally resulted in the mall's closing in 1978. The Dixie Square Mall is perhaps best known in popular culture for its brief appearance in the "Blues Brothers" film. The abandoned piece of land continued to create problems even after the mall's closing, and the full demolition of the building was finally completed in 2012.

10. What year did the building open its doors for the first time?

From Quiz Monroeville Mall

Answer: 1969

When the building opened, it was the largest indoor mall in the United States at 1.13 million square feet.

11. Each level of the parking garage, all the way around the mall, is named after what?

From Quiz Mall of America

Answer: A U.S. state

It's kind of fun to think you can travel between Hawaii and Nevada just by going up one/down level. There are more states than there are parking sections in the parking garage. If you ever forget where you parked, here's a little tip: Eastern states are on the East side of the building (Between Macy's and Nordstrom's) and Western states are on the west side of the building (between Sears and Bloomingdale's).

12. In which state, also known as the "Mother of Presidents", would one find the city of Chesterfield, which was the home of the Cloverleaf Mall before it permanently closed?

From Quiz They'll Hurt You and Desert You

Answer: Virginia

The Cloverleaf Mall opened in 1972 in Chesterfield, Virginia. The mall was heavily attended in its early weeks, since it featured stores that sold upscale goods and clothes (such as Sears and its Crystal Room). It also housed other attractions, such as cafeterias and a cinema. Even though the mall was partially damaged by a fire in 1995, it continued to operate for several more years. In a rather odd turn of events, the Chesterfield County Police Department opened a police station inside the mall in 1999. Soon after this (but not necessarily causally connected to the opening of the police station), the mall began a steady decline, leading to the closure of multiple stores. It eventually closed in 2008 and was demolished in 2011.

13. Which movie was filmed inside the mall?

From Quiz Monroeville Mall

Answer: Dawn of the Dead (1978)

The film was directed by George Romero, who was born in New York City. At the time of filming, the mall housed 143 stores on two levels, including the East Coast's first ever ice skating rink in a mall called the Monroeville Ice Palace as well as a parking lot that had 6500 spaces. There was a three-week hiatus from filming in December because Romero didn't want his crew to remove the decorations for filming and put them back up every night. Once filming continued, the crew began work at 11:00 P.M. and ended when the automated music came on at 7:00 A.M. Pretty much all of the 143 tenants allowed full use of their stores, except for the bank and the jewelry store (which required supervision by security.) Only thirteen tenants refused to let the crew include their stores in the motion picture. You will see Roger slide down the middle of the escalator inside Penneys. Definitely DO NOT (repeat, DO NOT) try this when you visit the mall. There are gut-eating scenes, and there is no escaping the zombies. Roger also climbed from inside the elevator to the top of it.

14. This particular mall, essentially the country's first shopping mall, can be found within Araneta Center. It was finished in 1975 and named to commemorate a particular event that occurred at that time. What is this historic mall?

From Quiz Major Malls of Metro Manila

Answer: Ali Mall

The mall was finished in 1975 and given the name of "Ali Mall" to commemorate the historic "Thrilla in Manila" bout between legendary boxers Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier that occurred in the Araneta Coliseum almost adjacent to the mall. The mall itself goes by the basic rules of Philippine shopping malls, which is not surprising since it is essentially the mall that laid down these rules. It is composed of four levels of retail stores, restaurants, fast food joints and a food court in the lowest level. Part of the single building the mall occupies is dedicated to parking, and several stores ring it on the outside. While more than 30 years old, this mall has stood the test of time. Amidst the rise and closure of numerous malls in the area, Ali Mall has always stood as a stalwart, almost a historical landmark in the area. A little piece of trivia: The mall is home to the first in-mall medical center in the country, Makati Medical Center Clinic. The clinic itself is a satellite outlet of the country's top-level hospital, Makati Medical Center.

15. Which New Jersey shopping mall closed in 2015 after being open for more than 40 years?

From Quiz They'll Hurt You and Desert You

Answer: Wayne Hills Mall

Once a popular spot for families in Wayne, New Jersey, the Wayne Hills Mall slowly became deserted and eventually was forced to shut its doors for good. The mall opened in 1973 and was beloved by the local community. It was especially visited around holidays like Christmas. Sadly, the 1990s decade saw the mall deteriorate as fewer people were shopping there. This triggered a series of store closings that eventually resulted in the mall itself having to close. The shopping center ended up being abandoned, and suffered heavy damage due to snowfall and flooding. Several stores closed in the 2010s, and the mall was shut down for good in 2015.

21. Which shopping mall in Mesa, Arizona, declared the "party" was over in the 2010s after struggling with declining patronage and increased criminal activity around the area?

From Quiz They'll Hurt You and Desert You

Answer: Fiesta Mall

Mesa, Arizona, was the home of the Fiesta Mall, which opened in 1979. The mall had many high-profile shops in it, including Sears, Macy's, and Best Buy. It underwent a successful renovation in 1989 and even featured events like an Avril Lavigne concert in 2004. Unfortunately, a combination of factors such as lower sales, increased competition, and higher crime rates, contributed to the Fiesta Mall's demise throughout the first part of the 21st century. The mall even had crimes like murder occur inside the property. All of this led to the eventual closing of the mall in 2018. The word "fiesta" means "party" in Spanish.

26. Dubbed by some as "The Most Dangerous Mall in America", which Baltimore mall deteriorated tremendously beginning in the 1980s? (its name may remind you of a song by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus)

From Quiz They'll Hurt You and Desert You

Answer: Old Town & Oldtown & Old Town Mall & Oldtown Mall

The Old Town Mall in Baltimore, Maryland actually has an extensive history: it originally opened its doors in 1818 as the Bel Air Market. In the late 1960s, the building went through major renovations hoping to attract more customers and restore its reputation. Unfortunately, the mall failed to attain any meaningful success and the area where it sits is now one that many residents of Baltimore would rather avoid. In 2018, the online documentary channel Uncharted Travel produced a video called "The Most Dangerous Mall in America", in which they showcased the poor condition that the mall was in. For example, they found broken windows, walls with graffiti on them, and even drug paraphernalia. In 2019, American musicians Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus released the hugely successful hit "Old Town Road".
