This term probably has its roots in the supposed wiseness of owls. I also received a note from player lindzbar that stated,"Chaucer penned a poem entitled "A Parliament of Fowls" which is possibly about the marriage of of Richard II to Anne of Bohemia.

This is a theory that has incurred much debate, however each bird in the poem takes on certain traits, and the owl is, in some respects, a harbinger of death. The argument could be made that as a representation of Death, the owl acts as final judge for those who are crossing over into the afterlife. In the Riverside Chaucer, the owl appears in line 343 of the poem. "The oule ek, that of deth the bode bryngeth;""
