Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What would you call a group of turtledoves?

Answer: Pitying

Pitying-feeling sympathy for someone or something. This fits quite nicely for a dove, doesn't it?
2. What is a group of sparrows known as?

Answer: Ubiquity

Ubiquity-something that seems to be everywhere. This definitely fits for a sparrow, one of the most common birds in the world.
3. What is a group of hummingbirds called?

Answer: Shimmer

Shimmer-to quiver with light. When a hummingbird flies, it can flap its wings over 50 times a second! You can imagine the light "shimmering" on those super fast wings!
4. What is a group of mosquitoes called?

Answer: Scourge

Scourge-to cause suffering. Yes, mosquitoes cause a LOT of suffering. Especially now that many mosquitoes are infected with West Nile, they have become more dangerous than ever.
5. What is a group of fireflies known as?

Answer: Sprinkle

Sprinkle-to scatter water or sand. Do fireflies scatter water? I didn't think so. Although they do look like someone kicked up some dust or sand when they all light up.
6. What is a group of eels known as?

Answer: Congeries

Congeries-a group of something, like eels or tiny boxes. Like you can compare eels to tiny boxes! A conger eel is a large eel that can grow up to ten feet in length!
7. What is a group of moles known as?

Answer: Movement

Movement-action of changing position; walking from place to place. Moles definitely move a lot in their homes in the dirt, maybe in search for a clew of worms!
8. What is a group of domesticated boars known as?

Answer: Singular

Singular-having only one. You would think a GROUP of anything couldn't POSSIBLY be named after a word meaning one!
9. What is a group of birds known as? And I DON'T mean "flock" or "gaggle."

Answer: Dissimulation

Dissimulation-hiding ones' feelings. I don't see why a bird would want to hide its' feelings. Don't they WANT us to know to stop killing two of them at a time with just a single stone?!
10. What is a group of barnacles known as?

Answer: Fixture

Fixture-an object that is permanently fixed into a house, like a sink, toilet, or radiator. Barnacles are those tiny sea animals that "stick" themselves to the bottoms of buoys and boats, especially in the ocean. They are almost like "fixtures" onto the bottom of the boats or buoys.
11. What is a group of amoebas known as?

Answer: Ooze

Ooze-slimy mud. Amoebas are tiny single-celled organisms that look like slimy little blobs. I guess that is where the group name of "ooze" came from!
12. What is a group of feral cats known as?

Answer: Destruction

Destruction-Complete ruining. Feral cats can be pretty vicious, and are very territorial. You can imagine what would happen if you stuck two dominant feral cats together in a room. They would create such destruction!
13. What do you call a group of swordfish?

Answer: Flotilla

Flotilla-small group of boats. Hmmm... It makes you wonder why a fish would get the name of a boat. Maybe it is because swordfish are related to sailfish, which gives us the "sail" in "sailboat?"
14. What is a group of puppies known as? And I DON'T mean a litter!

Answer: Piddle

Piddle-urinating. I only have one thing to say about this. Interesting...
15. What is a group of flamingoes known as?

Answer: Flamboyance

Flamboyance-being too bright or too colorful. Well, many people, including myself, think flamingoes are quite bright, and a little too pink. But did you know; flamingoes actually start out gray? The pink color comes from the krill they eat. As they always say... You are what you eat, right?

Thanks for playing! Hopefully you have broadened your understanding of animals group names!
