Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which bird carries the scientific name of Nycticorax nycticorax?

Answer: Night Heron

Its name can be explained by its habit to get active at dusk. Somehow the English name for this bird is more appealing than the Dutch: kwak.
2. Ciconia ciconia is the scientific name of a wading bird. By what common name do we know it?

Answer: White Stork

A very common bird in Holland before World War II, but it had almost disappeared in 1973. Fortunately it has survived, otherwise how do we get our population to grow?
3. Which water bird has the scientific name Tadorna tadorna?

Answer: Shelduck

The male can only be distinguished from the female by the knob on its bill. You'll find this gooselike bird in the coastal areas of most countries in Western Europe, and some places in the Mediterranean as well.
4. Another water bird is scientifically called Anser anser. We know it as?

Answer: Greylag Goose

A flock of these geese flies in V-formation.
5. Cygnus cygnus is a swan. But what kind of swan?

Answer: Whooper swan

It is a whooper swan, distinguishable from the mute swan by its yellow bill. The mute swan's scientific name is Cygnus olor. Bump swan, I made up. It is a literal translation from the name we use in Holland for the mute swan.
6. Buteo buteo is the scientific name of a bird of prey. Which one is it?

Answer: Common Buzzard

And common it is. Except in the Arctic regions, you'll find this medium-sized bird of prey everywhere in Europe.
7. Milvus milvus is another bird of prey. What is its common name?

Answer: Red Kite

One of the bigger birds of prey, with a wingspan of 150 centimetres, or 4 feet and 9 inches. You'll find him predominantly in Central and Southern Europe.
8. Which gamebird has the scientific name of Lagopus lagopus?

Answer: Willow Grouse

This bird seems to like the colder areas. It lives in Scandinavia (except the southern part of Sweden), Russia and the British Isles. Continental Europe however seems to be a no-'go'area for it. In North America this bird is known as the Willow Ptarmigan.
9. Perdix perdix is the scientific name for a bird from the pheasant family. What is its common name?

Answer: Gray Partridge

A stocky bird that lays 10 to 20 eggs in a well hidden nest on the ground or beneath bushes.
10. Once again I give you a scientific name of a bird from the pheasant family. Its scientific name is Coturnix coturnix. What is its common name?

Answer: Quail

To be found all over Europe, except the Scandinavian countries. Its hearing must not be that good, as in Holland there is a saying: as deaf as a quail.
