British Isles Trivia Questions

1. This island is the location of the village with the longest name in Britain - allegedly!

From Quiz
Four British Islands

Answer: Anglesey

Being able to remember and pronounce the name of this village is somewhat of a party trick. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is the full but seldom used name, and is shown on the long board at the railway station for tourists to photograph. It lies close to the Menai Strait and is practically the first place you come to when you cross over the bridge into Anglesey. On maps the name is usually shortened to Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, or Llanfair PG, to distinguish it from several other Llanfairs in Wales.

2. We'll start our journey in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands Region. The name derives from the River Ness, which empties into which body of water?

From Quiz Round the World With Team Red: Stage 1

Answer: Moray Firth

Inverness is the most northerly city in the United Kingdom. 'Inver' means 'mouth of', identifying its location on the coast at the estuary of the river. You will probably recognise the name Loch Ness, the source of the river, with its famed, though mythical, monster. Of the options given, only the Moray Firth is on the east coast of Scotland. The other three are located on the west coast. (Question by Rossian).

3. The traditional language of the Isle of Man is Manx. What is the Manx name for the island?

From Quiz Idyll on the Isle of Man

Answer: Ellan Vannin

The Celtic language of Manx is the traditional language of the island although English is the official language. It is considered a "critically endangered" language although in recent years it has seen a slight revival. Natives call their island Ellan Vannin. The other answers are Manx phrases - "fastyr mie" means good evening, "aigh vie ort" means good luck and "brawe" means fine.

4. What is the political status of the Channel Islands?

From Quiz The Channel Islands

Answer: British Crown Dependencies

The Channel islands were once part of the Duchy of Normandie, and came into the possession of the English Crown when William I conquered England in 1066. Although they have never been part of the United Kingdom, they are Crown Dependencies which means the United Kingdom is "responsible" for them. The exact definition is somewhat complicated! There are three Crown Dependencies: the Isle of Man, The Bailiwick of Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the last two of which make up the Channel Islands. The Bailiwick of Jersey consists of the largest Channel Island, Jersey itself, together with some outlying rocky reefs. The Bailiwick of Guernsey consists of the islands of Guernsey, Herm, Sark, Alderney, Brecqhou, Jethou and Lihou, plus other outlying reefs.

5. One of the places I've always wanted to visit is the Laxey Wheel. To which island, off the west coast of Britain, will I have to travel to see it?

From Quiz The Bucket List - UK & Ireland

Answer: Isle of Man

The wheel was originally built in 1854 to pump water from the Great Laxey Mines, which produced lead, copper, silver and zinc. The mine closed in 1929 and the wheel and site were acquired by the Isle of Man government in 1965. Following restoration work, management was transferred to Manx National Heritage, with the wheel becoming one of the major tourist attractions on the island. The Isle of Man is situated in the Irish Sea and is a British Crown Dependancy with its own government, known as the Tynwald.

6. What is the name of the festival celebrated in Shetland on the last Tuesday in January each year? This festival involves the burning of a wooden replica of a Viking Longship.

From Quiz Islands of Great Britain

Answer: Up Helly Aa

In October 2008, the Guizer Jarl and his squad took a replica boat to Orkney to celebrate the links between Shetland and Orkney. The boat was burnt ceremoniously by the side of the Peedie Sea.

7. A quick look at a map is enough to tell you that Great Britain is the largest of the British Isles, followed by Ireland. But which is the third largest island?
