Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these foods would an adult osprey bring back to its young?

Answer: Trout

The magnificent osprey lives exclusively on fish. They have just started to breed in North Wales.
2. Which of these species is NOT a hole-nester?

Answer: Chaffinch

Chaffinches build their nests in bushes and low trees. The other species use holes in trees and/or nestboxes.
3. Which is the only British bird which can walk down a tree?

Answer: Nuthatch

Many birds walk up the tree trunk, but only the nuthatch can walk back down again. They will often come to a bird table to collect nuts.
4. Which bird's song is often written as "teacher teacher"?

Answer: Great tit

"Teacher teacher" rings through the woodland every spring. Great tits make a lot of different sounds which can confuse even experienced birdwatchers.
5. Which of these bird species is NOT a resident but a summer visitor?

Answer: Turtle dove

Turtle doves return from Africa in late April and early May. Collared doves first bred in Britain in the 1950's, and they are now a very common species. Rock doves are the ancestors of the street or feral pigeon. Stock doves look like small wood pigeons without the white neck patch.
6. Which of these birds is an auk?

Answer: Razorbill

All four species are found on the cliffs, but only the razorbill is a member of the auk family. Other members of the family include the little auk and the puffin.
7. What colour is the female blackcap's cap?

Answer: Reddish-brown

Blackcaps were always thought of as summer visitors, but increasing numbers of them are over-wintering in Britain. Their song can be confused with the garden warblers, so be careful!
8. Which bird's nickname is the "Yaffle"?

Answer: Green woodpecker

It's called the "Yaffle" because of its peculiar laughing call. The green is the largest British woodpecker.
9. Which bird wants "A little bit of bread and no cheese"?

Answer: Yellowhammer

"A little bit of bread and no cheese" is the usual interpretation: more sinister is "the devil, the devil, the devil'll take you." Yellowhammers are a bird under serious threat in the countryside.
10. The serin, usually a Mediterranean species, is occasionally seen in Britain,. To which family of birds does it belong?

Answer: Finches

Serins are handsome birds, closely related to canaries. It is hoped that they will breed in Britain some day.
