Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most popular breeds of cat in the USA, this short-haired breed has the old name for the country where it was thought to have originated. Which fine-boned, slender, medium-sized breed of cat is this?

Answer: Abyssinian

Although this breed was developed in Great Britain, it was given the old name for what is now Ethiopia, Abyssinia, because it was thought the breed developed from kittens brought home by returning soldiers coming from that part of the world. There is an element of truth in the story but, it now seems that the soldiers almost certainly bought their kittens from Egyptian traders, rather than Ethiopian ones. Indeed, recent research suggests that the breed may have developed from a single cat, named Zula, bought by a soldier in Alexandria in 1868.
2. This breed is sometimes called a "Purebred Long-haired Siamese", since is developed as a mutation from the standard Siamese. Noted for its sapphire-blue eyes, this breed generally has a light-coloured body with darker extremities. Considered the most intelligent of all long-haired breeds, which cat is this?

Answer: Balinese

This breed originated with cats imported into the UK and US in the mid-1800s from Thailand (which was then Siam). Some of these cats had the long-haired gene and the Balinese breed developed from deliberate breeding to emphasize that natural trait. The breed has no real connection with the island of Bali or with Indonesia at all, but was named because the original breeder considered that their grace compared with that of dancers from the island that she had seen.
3. A relatively new breed, these cats date back only to the 1970s. They were developed by breeding domestic cats with hybrids of the Asian leopard cat. The result is an exotic-looking breed, with spots or rosettes on the back and sides and stripes elsewhere. Which breed is this?

Answer: Bengal

The result of the cross-breeding necessary to produce this breed has been a with a gentle, domestic temperament but a 'wild' appearance. They were given the name 'Bengal cat' as a nod to the taxonomic name of the Asian leopard cat from which a portion of their genes originated.
In addition to spots, rosettes and stripes, Bengal cats often have 'mascara' marking, with stripes besides the eyes and on the front legs.
4. The tapered muzzle and shape of the head of this fairly rare breed from France means that they often appear to be smiling. Large and muscular with relatively short limbs, they are exceptional hunters with extremely fast reflexes. Which breed is this?

Answer: Chartreux

The Chartreux is similar to the British shorthair, but they have a long history dating back to the 16th century in their native France.
The writer Colette owned Chartreux cats, and even made one the heroine in the novel "La Chatte". French president Charles de Gaulle had one named Gris-Gris who followed him from room to room. The official mascot of the Montreal International Jazz Festival is a blue Chartreux.
5. Fairly small and short-haired, this is one of the few naturally spotted breeds of domestic cat. Relatively long hind legs is only one of the features that makes this the fastest of all domestic cat breeds. Which breed is this?

Answer: Egyptian mau

Egyptian mau have been clocked at speeds of more than 30 mph. They are also unusual when they leap from one place to another in that they usually land on their back legs.
The name derives from the Middle Egypt language (2000-1300 B.C.). 'mw' (meaning cat). However, the breeds Egyptian origins appears to be a myth, with recent DNA tests suggesting European or North American origins.
A very friendly breed, the mau is particularly known for becoming fiercely loyal to one particular member of a family.
6. Marcello here is making a good fist of his "Blair Witch" impersonation. This long-haired breed is noted for its short legs, round face and compressed muzzle. Also sometimes called a "Shirazi", which breed is this?

Answer: Persian

The breed was first imported into Europe from Persia (now Iran) in the early 1600s. It did not become really popular in Britain and the U.S. until the second half of the 20th century, but it is now the most popular breed of pedigree cats on the American side of the Pond.
A placid and unpretentious cat, Persians are ideally suited for apartment life, although they can be very fussy eaters. They come in all colours including pointed, tortoiseshell, blue, golden and tabby.
7. Developed through selective breeding in the 1960s, this furless breed has a coat the texture of chamois. Noted for their wedge-shaped heads with prominent cheekbones and large, lemon-shaped eyes and very large ears, they certainly stand out in a crowd. Which breed is this?

Answer: Sphynx

Sphynx cats are not truly hairless, usually possessing a fine later of down. Highly energetic, intelligent and curious, they are the cat world's true extroverts. They are one of the few cats who will be waiting behind the door, dog-like, when their owner's return home.
The lack of a proper fur coat means that Sphynx cats do not deal well with prolonged sunshine and they are as prone to sunburn as their fair-skinned owners. They also do not handle cold well, and you will frequently seen them dressed in custom-designed coats during the winter.
8. Telling him that its for his own good helps not a jot. This cat looks as mad as hell about his new headgear. This breed originated in Philadelphia when a Siamese cat gave birth to kittens with white feet. Usually light-coloured, their points (ear tips, tail, face mask and sometimes legs) are always black, and they frequently have patterned faces. Which rare breed is this?

Answer: Snowshoe

The breed was named snowshoe because of its white feet. Social and docile, they are an ideal cat breed for houses with young children and/or other pets. Intelligent, they can be taught to fetch or open doors. They are also one of the few cat breeds that actually like water, often paddling in it and even sometimes swimming. Snowshoes are also very vocal cats.
9. One of the oldest natural cat breeds in North America, this is the largest domesticated breed of cat. Males may weight as much as 25 pounds and can stand 16 inches tall. Solid and muscular with broad chests, they do not fully mature until at least three years old. Which breed is this?

Answer: Maine coon

'Guinness World Records' listed a Maine coon named Stewie as the world's longest cat, measuring 48.5 inches from nose to the tip of his tail. Sounds like a Great Dane with claws to me! Maine coons can be found in just about any colour that other cats come in, with 'brown tabby' the most common. Native to the state of Maine, they have developed to cope with cold weather, with dense, shaggy, water-resistant fur on their undersides and tail region (ideal for sitting in snow and ice) and a long bush tail that can be wrapped around them for protection for chilly winds.

Their large paws are ideal for walking on snow.
10. One of the world's most ancient cat breeds, it has been domesticated since the 1600s. Noted for their long, silky coats, most commonly white although they can be found in most colours. Large, pointed, side-set ears and almond-shaped eyes are the norm. Which breed is this?

Answer: Turkish Angora

Descended from the African wildcat, like all domestic cats, the Turkish Angora has been common in Asia Minor, Persia and Russia for more than 500 years. The Persian breed was developed in the US and UK from Turkish Angoras.
In the early 1900s, Ankara Zoo specialized in breeding white Turkish Angoras with two different coloured eyes.
Energetic and playful, Angoras can often be found perched at the highest possible point in a room. Some even like to ride around on their owner's shoulders.
