Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This duck is the most common in the UK and is found all over the Northern Hemisphere. The females are speckled brown and the males have iridescent green heads. What duck is it?

Answer: Mallard

These ducks are very common and are usually found in parks. They quite like humans and I have great memories of being taken to feed them stale bread at our local park. They are mostly surface feeders, but do dive for food. They lay greyish coloured eggs and their clutch size is usually around 9 eggs. I have a real soft spot for the mallard.
2. Wild ducks have two ways to feed on water. What are these?

Answer: Surface Feeding and diving

Mallards and gadwalls are surface feeders, but can dive for food. Scoters and tufted ducks are common divers.
3. In the summer the male of this duck has chestnut coloured plumage and its bill is blue. It lives on marshes and shallow pools. What is this duck?

Answer: Ruddy Duck

The female Ruddy Duck is mach plainer than the male - she is brown with a creamy coloured face with a bar leading from the bill. The males look similar in the winter. These ducks have a small clutch of around 6 eggs which are cream coloured.
4. Which of these is NOT a real duck?

Answer: Pink Toed Merganser

Mergansers do not look particularly like ducks as they have very sharp looking bills. They eat fish and tend to hunt in groups, forcing fish into shallow waters and then seizing them.
5. This sea faring duck has amazing feathers. The male has striking black and white and the female is a dull speckled brown with greyish underwing. Which duck is it?

Answer: Common Eider

The Eider is famed for its warm feathers. The Common Eider would never be mistaken for the King Eider as the latter bird is black with a pinkish breast and a shield above its bill. The Common Eider never strays far from the sea and feeds on different kinds of shellfish. They can dive up to depths of 50 feet or more, but tend to feed in shallower waters.
6. Most wild ducks fly south for the winter, but what are they doing in the north in the first place?

Answer: Breeding

Most breeding grounds are very traditional and have been used by ducks for centuries. The breeding grounds are usually isolated, thus providing protection, and may be used by many different species of duck.
7. The male of this duck could not be mistaken for any other. Its plumage is many different colours including red, orange, blue and cream. It also has black and white stripes on its chest. Another striking feature is the orange trianguar feathers which stand upright at the tip of its wing. What is this duck?

Answer: Mandarin duck

The female is a plain bird, but still beautiful. She is brown, with a pale underbody and a grey head. They like to live in a wooded area. The Pochard has no stripes on its chest, the Wood Duck is related to the Mandarin and is highly coloured, but the head and body are much darker, the Cinnamon Teal is mostly chestnut in colour.
8. Why are male ducks more prominently coloured?

Answer: For display

Drakes are like many other male birds and have their plumage for display. It is the females that are speckled or mottled to aid with camouflage when roosting or feeding the young. Although the males are stunning, many of the females are just as lovely, but in an understated way.
9. This duck is large, almost gooselike in shape, is black and white, although the head can look green. The beak is vivid red and in males is shaped at the base like a swan. There is a chestnut band on the breast and a black stripe on wings. What duck is this?

Answer: Shelduck

The Scaup, Scoter and Gadwall are smaller birds and do not have such striking markings. Shelduck parents may leave before their young are fully developed, but leave others to watch the youngsters. They feed on seeds and small animals such as snails.
10. Most ducks can be placed into one of four main groups. The dabbling duck, diving ducks and sawbills are three, what is the fourth?

Answer: Sea duck

Mallards are a typical example of a dabbling duck, the Tufted Duck is a diver, any Merganser is a sawbill and an Eider is a sea duck.
