Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the flat-coated retriever originate?

Answer: England

The flat-coated retriever was developed in the 1800s from a variety of gun dogs and herding breeds, including the Irish setter, the Newfoundland, the St. John's water dog, and the collie.
2. What trait is the flat-coated retriever best known for?

Answer: A tail that's always wagging

A very optimistic breed, flat-coated retrievers are tolerant and cheerful. They do have an excellent sense of smell, though not as fine-tuned as the bloodhound or some other breeds. Their appetite is no different from any other dog. And flat-coated retrievers are generally very peaceable with other animals, so the animal aggression option is not true at all!
3. How might you describe the flat-coated retriever's temperament in a few words?

Answer: Friendly, playful, submissive, and gentle

The flat-coated retriever is very much all of these things. Their submissiveness should not be likened to being timid, in the contrary, they are known for being confident and happy. Though exuberant in play, they can easily be taught to be gentle with even young children. These traits generally come naturally, however, socialization is always highly recommended with any breed.
4. How might you describe the flat-coated retriever's activity level?

Answer: Very active, needs lots of daily exercise

Some sources refer to the flat-coated retriever as the most active of all the retrievers. Therefore, they need plenty of daily exercise, and can be easily bored. If they don't meet up to their daily exercise needs, they may become hyper and destructive.

However, it doesn't have to be a stressful issue. Flat-coated retrievers are great dogs to have fun with, as the title of the quiz implies. They love to swim by nature, and love hunting with you (by retrieving fallen birds). Fetch comes practically naturally, and they can also make excellent jogging companions.
5. What is the flat-coated retriever's trainability like?

Answer: Enjoys learning if they see a point to it

Flat-coated retrievers are intelligent and willing to please, though most will also exhibit a streak of willfulness at times. They are also easily bored because of their somewhat short attention span. It's best to keep training sessions short and fun, without excessive repetition. So while training isn't difficult in this breed, they're not quite as receptive to it as the golden and Labrador retriever.
6. The Monroes want an active dog that they can take hiking and on camping trips, but they also want it to be gentle and tolerant with the children and other dogs. The kids want a dog with lots of spirit and playfulness, but that also won't attempt to dominate them. Which breed sounds right for them?

Answer: Flat-coated retriever

The Monroes, though made-up, sound like an ideal candidate for the flat-coated retriever. Flat-coated retrievers are active enough for them, and are also known for being superb with kids. This breed is high-spirited and very playful, known for keeping a puppy-like exuberance even into their later years. Flat-coated retrievers are also typically submissive, and rare is the case where one will attempt to dominate her owner.

American pit bull terriers are quite dominant and dog-aggressive.

Chihuahuas are small, lapdogs.

Alaskan malamutes are often dominant and dog-aggressive, and might not do very well with the children.
7. Don't get a flat-coated retriever unless you're willing to put up with a LOT of shedding.

Answer: False

Flat-coated retrievers require about average grooming maintenance. Weekly brushing and the occasional bath, and maybe minor (if any) annual trimming is enough to keep them looking good. They are average shedders, so won't fill your house with hair, but will drop hair during shedding season.
8. The flat-coated retriever is a poor choice if you already own other pets because of their high prey drive and dog aggression.

Answer: False

On the contrary, flat-coats are known for being very peaceable with other pets, getting along well with dogs and can learn to be gentle with cats and other small animals.
9. Because of their independence, flat-coated retrievers don't mind being left alone for longer periods of time.

Answer: False

Flat-coated retrievers are sociable and devoted dogs, and most don't like being left alone for extended periods of time. Unless you can be home doing things with them for at least a few hours each day, it's probably not the breed for you.
10. What are flat-coated retrievers generally used for, other than companions?

Answer: Gun dog

Flat-coats are very exuberant in the hunt, eager to retrieve fallen birds and waterfowl. This is one sport they excel at, though they also do well in agility, tracking, and more.
