Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whereabouts did the dog which became the Labrador originate?

Answer: Newfoundland

Despite its name, the Labrador was bred in Newfoundland. The name may have been given as Labrador is next to Newfoundland, and the Labrador retriever sometimes worked in its waters, which border part of Newfoundland. The Labrador, as we know it, was developed in England from dogs imported from Canada.
2. What was the Labrador's original function?

Answer: To haul in fishing nets and retrieve fish fallen out of nets and off hooks

The original Labrador had to be eager to please, an excellent swimmer, have a dense, water proof coat and be the right size to haul in and out of two men fishing boats. These characteristics are still seen in today's Labradors making them excellent guide dogs, gundogs, police drug sniffing dogs, obedience champions and, most important of all, perfect family pets!
3. Which of the following is NOT a current or previously known name of today's Lab and some of its ancestors?

Answer: Newfound labrador

The very first Labradors were called St. John's dogs. The breed has changed greatly since these dogs existed but they are still the primary stock of all current Labs. This charming breed has also had many other names such as the Lesser Labrador, English retriever, Little Newfoundland and the Newfoundland water dog.
4. What color were the very first Labrador retrievers?

Answer: Black and white

Interestingly enough, the very first Labs were black with white stars on their chests and white socks or dots on their paws. Today, solid colors are preferred but a white spot on the chest is permissible.
5. Which description best fits that of the Labrador's breed standard?

Answer: "Strongly built, medium sized, short coupled, dog possessing a sound, athletic, well balanced conformation that enables it to function as a retrieving gun dog, the substance and the soundness to hunt waterfowl and game for long hours."

"A sturdy, compactly-built dog, conveying the impression of quality without coarseness. A merry creature whose essential function is to hunt, by following a scent. Bold, with great activity, stamina and determination. Alert, intelligent, and of even temperament." This is the Beagle.
"Medium-sized, well-balanced dog with a long, chiseled head; small drop ears; tail carried no higher than 20 degrees above the top line. The overall picture is that of an elegant, hard-driving, intelligent hunter, with stamina and dash. " This is the English pointer.
"Long, substantial dog. His heavy brow, deep chest, straight forelegs, powerful hindquarters, massive bone and good feet all give him the power and endurance to move through dense underbrush in pursuit of game. His stature is dignified, his expression pensive, but at the same time he shows great enthusiasm for work and play." This is the clumber spaniel.
6. Which is not a desirable characteristic in the Labrador?

Answer: A ewe neck

"The neck should rise strongly from the shoulders with a moderate arch. A short, thick neck or a "ewe" neck is incorrect."

"Above all, a Labrador retriever must be well balanced, enabling it to move in the show ring or work in the field with little or no effort. The typical Labrador possesses style and quality without over refinement, and substance without lumber or cloddiness. The Labrador is bred primarily as a working gun dog; structure and soundness are of great importance."
7. The ancestry of the Labrador is a bit of a mystery, however it has been speculated that the Labrador's ancestry goes back to which breeds?

Answer: St. Hubert's hound, Portugese water dog, European pointers, and dogs belonging to the native Indians.

It is difficult to tell the exact ancestry of this breed, but there are similarities and some evidence to show that these are ancestors. The other three options were roughly, randomly selected breeds from no exact breed.
8. During the Labrador's development, another breed was also created. What is this breed?

Answer: Newfoundland

The two breeds are distinctly different; the larger longer haired breed is the Newfoundland and the smaller short-coated breed is known as today's Labrador.
9. Which is not an acceptable term used for Labrador coloration?

Answer: golden

This is surprising as many people refer to "yellow" Labs as "golden," however the breed standard states "Yellows may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and under parts of the dog." Liver is another term used for chocolates and cinnamon can be used in reference to dogs that are light brown or dark yellow. Golden Labs are Labradors crossed with golden retrievers.

The purebred lab must never be referred to as "golden."
10. Purebred Labradors are always solid black, brown or yellow, sometimes with a spot of white on the chest. Any other variation of this means that the dog is NOT purebred.

Answer: False

There are quite often puppies born with other markings or "mismarks" as they are often referred to. Labradors with impeccable breeding history and bloodlines have been known to produce occasional puppies with tan points on ears, muzzle and eyes, brindling, splashing, patches, mosaic patterns and spots!
